To think the nurse fibbed?

Had a smear this morning and while making conversation with the nurse, mentioned that I'd had difficulty with the speculum when my coil was being fitted.

After she'd finished up she said all the usual about there being a wait of up to 4 weeks for results, but that my cervix looked normal and my coil strings were definitely in the right place.

I was in a huge hurry leaving so almost didn't process what she'd said until I was out of the door but - I don't have a coil in anymore! I haven't for years! Indeed have had a vaginal scan, a second baby (and so multiple more scans!), a caesarean section etc since the coil exited my body. I definitely haven't had another fitted in some kind of fugue state. I'm completely baffled by why she'd say that about the strings when there can't have been any visible because they're not there. Is there any way there'd be something in there anatomically that might give the appearance of coil strings? I'm stumped!

Apparently I had one put in 14 years ago during an op, can't really remember but it's on my notes, no strings, sent for an ultrasound but nothing was seen - could be floating around anywhere in my body I guess - nobody seemed too bothered!!

HorseyMel · 25/07/2023 17:46

Fibbed?

sheetspread · 25/07/2023 17:47

Hello everyone, thanks for all responses!

Definitely haven't got one in - last vaginal ultrasound was after my c section. And last smear was 4 years ago.

Maybe you have worms?

Hmm, worms would struggle to survive in a vagina thankfully - they do need food you know 😱🤷🏼‍♀️

Appleofmyeye2023 · 25/07/2023 17:52

I’d agree, she seen too many vaginas that day and they’ve all rolled into one. And she’s doing something repetitive and is thinking about what to get the kids for tea…you said about coil, sh got confused, remembered previous bond/brunette pubic hair and bought bel Need to you complete with string.
I doubt it was a lie. Just a vaginally and cervix overloaded nurse 🤷🏼‍♀️🙄

sheetspread · 25/07/2023 17:52

Only thing that gives me pause re autopilot/one more vagina on the conveyor belt is that it was first thing in the morning!

Yes of course she has fibbed, which is really quite concerning! Cannot believe some of the gaslighting on here to try and defend the nurse's actions, even going so far as to suggest it must be worms, or the OP really must just have a coil after all 😯I think you need to speak to a GP or the practice manager OP.

Nobody's gaslighting her ffs

StrawberryAmaretti · 25/07/2023 17:56

She fibbed op clearly assumed you had one and lied she'd checked.
On the plus side smear results aren't done by the nurses.

WalkRun · 25/07/2023 17:56

She told a lie to get you out of there asap.
i would book another appt. Then ask her again about the coil threads. If she said she definitely had seen them, say you have no coil and see her reaction. This is unacceptable and unprofessional.

😂

On the subject of...as a warning to people who think their pet is covered by a ''Pet club'' wormer at their vets..

My dog is wormed every three months on the dot as recommended by the vet.

She passed a string looking thing that THRASHED.... a Worm.

Went straight to vets who said ''Just worm her monthly from now on as worms are in the environment all around us .

I do this now , and not seen another.

FernFae · 25/07/2023 17:57

OP this is really bad you need to ring up and clarify it and get them to check your records as to what's said on them and kick off about it . It's not good of the nurse at all. Some of the replies/experiences are shocking huge hugs OP and to all

Exactly this. She just told you what she thought you wanted to hear. That is incredibly concerning. As for the 'autopilot, just another vagina on a conveyer belt' comments, this is why I don't go and see the nurses at the GP surgery for my smears 🙄

I was about to say, are you 100% sure one wasn’t fitted post c-section? The hospital I used to work in are very hot on this & I can imagine some doctors taking “consent” from women having an emergency CS who are in no fit state to agree.

I'm chilled reading this - it's proper horror movie stuff (like Rosemary's Baby). I had my EMCS under GA and I'm going to have nightmares about this now!

oakleaffy · 25/07/2023 18:05

@sheetspread I hope you get this sorted.
Once I went to a locum GP who asked ''how my asthma was''.

I said I didn't have it, and never have, and he looked puzzled.

I had a prescription, and noticed at the pharmacy the patient name was completely different to mine- and the age was off as well .

He clearly had someone else's notes up, despite calling out ''Oakleaffy'' on the speaker.

But in your case the nurse actually said she saw coil strings when she didn't?

That's very bizarre and concerning.

Daffodildilys · 25/07/2023 18:06

Maybe the nurse should go to Specsavers??

sheetspread · 25/07/2023 18:07

@someonethatyoulovetoomuch - 100% sure - have had vaginal scan since c-section, and nobody has been near my vagina since!

They can fit a coil without a woman knowing?? That's surely wrong.

Or maybe she was thinking of the previous client. We all make mistakes.

"We all make mistakes"....?!
That's an outrageous lie though.

sittingonacornflake · 25/07/2023 18:15

It's fairly obvious what has happened here.

You must have accidentally put your vagina under your pillow and have been visited by the coil fairy one night. Easily done.

Lavenderandbrown · 25/07/2023 18:22

OP please call and ask to speak to the nurse who took care of you. The electronic chart will show who it was if you cannot remember. Telling someone their coil strings are in place and LIKELY DOCUMENTING this is a medical mistake. A serious but correctable mistake. It’s a procedural mistake but no harm to patient. You will want this corrected in your medical records. Nurses do make mistakes. It can be corrected within global medical accountability. And if you call and she’s unconcerned or evasive or shitty go directly to her overseeing physician or make a formal written complaint or seek ombudsman intervention. Medicine is not done on autopilot nor “oh yea I got my vaginas confused they are so alike” And of course you don’t have worms.

Some of the care experienced by posters here is appallingly awful

this!

putting a coil in without consent, appalling disregard for women’s fertility and body choices. Leaving women not even knowing it’s there?? I’m
appall and sad for anyone impacted. Surely that’s assault?

Not when it happens to women

The idea of worming dogs isn't to stop them ever getting any worms.... constant worming will just lead to resistance and wormers won't work any more. Same as antibiotics.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/07/2023 18:37

Make an appointment with a female GP and explain. Seek reassurance about the communication provided by a highly intelligent, postgraduate qualified nurse.

In my experience, nurses chat shit. I try not to deal with them.

Not when it happens to women

I am honestly shocked. I had no idea this could possibly happen. Excuse my ignorance, but why would a surgeon fit a coil post c-section without consent? Is it to ensure a woman does not get pregnant again too quickly? Is there not another way such as, I don't know, discussing the need for contraception with the woman after the c-section? Or is that too radical an idea?

OP I would follow up on this. Why are people minimising what happened?
