Is this a lot of hair shedding during shower? (PICS)

Each time I shower. This amount of hair comes out. I was wondering whether it looked excessive as I’ve suffered hair loss before and have PTSD.

that would not for me personally but i dont brush my hair so a lot comes out when i wash and condition it, more than what you've pictured. i've also got extremely wide individual hairs and very thickly covered scalp.

how does it compare to when you lost hair previously? Is it a similar amount?

Whataretheodds · 24/07/2023 20:03

Same as me - I have long hair. Less if I brush before washing my hair

WunWun · 24/07/2023 20:03

How often do you wash your hair?

readingismycardio · 24/07/2023 20:04

How long is your hair? Tbh, I doesn't look dramatic at all, the strands look long and tangled. I wouldn't worry just yet!

AgnesX · 24/07/2023 20:04

Have you had your thyroid checked, hair loss (and the texture being coarser) are symptoms.

nosepierce · 24/07/2023 20:04

Also, please don't worry too much if it's not falling out in clumps.

I think it's one of those where you will have to watch the situation and look at your diet and nutrition.

YesterdayO · 24/07/2023 20:07

It looks less than my normal, but I have long hair which I only wash every other day.

I second asking to have your thyroid levels checked, and your iron levels.

Chowtime · 24/07/2023 20:10

I'm really surprised at these answers. I would have said that it's a lot of hair to lose in the shower.

Feduperika · 24/07/2023 20:11

I lost that amount of hair for a while several months after giving birth. My hairline visibly receded. It all grew back by a year after birth. You don't mention a pregnancy but I thought I'd mention it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/07/2023 20:12

I lose that much every time I brush or shower- (but I also have lots of other symptoms of hypothyroidism so will add hair loss to my growing list 🤦‍♀️ )

SBAM · 24/07/2023 20:15

I lose about that much. I have thyroid disease, low iron stores and low b12.

pippinsleftleg · 24/07/2023 20:22

I have just below shoulder length very thick hair that I wash every three days and that looks normal for me.

For you it would depend on how long, how thick and how often you wash it.

Bonfire23 · 24/07/2023 20:24

Normal for me (I wash it every 3 days and don't brush in between so that's the only hair loss IYSWIM)

Usernameunknownfornow · 24/07/2023 20:28

I have long thick curly hair tailbone length and that is a lot of hair to me, I only shed that amount of hair if i detangle my hair after not doing it for 3 days.

PurpleRayne89 · 24/07/2023 20:34

Had a baby 22 months ago. Iron was low and ferritin too but been on supplements for months now. I wash my hair weekly. Shoulder length, Afro textured hair. It’s curly, I’m mixed race. I have anxiety about hair loss. I was worried. I hadn’t combed my hair for a day prior.

i have very thick hair and lose at least that much every time I wash it - so much so that I have one of the plug filter things that stops it blocking the pipes I also lose hair each time I brush or comb it and have to clean my brush every couple of days to keep it hair free.
The vacuum cleaners picks up loads off the floor too and I have wondered whether the amount I lose is normal because it does seem excessive. My concern doesn’t go much further than that because for me the loss isn’t noticeable and the hairdresser never expresses any concern when my hair is being washed there. I would definitely be more worried if my hair was obviously thinning because of the loss.
II’ve discounted a dietary cause because I eat a healthy diet and as far as I know don’t have any medical issues that might account for the loss. I do wonder though whether my more than occasional use of cheap and cheerful straighteners might have something to do with the problem.

confusedlots · 24/07/2023 20:36

I lose more than that, but I'm peri menopausal

Usernameunknownfornow · 24/07/2023 20:38

Depends on age aswel

Pussywilloww · 24/07/2023 20:38

I'm also surprised at these answers. I have quite long (and difficult) hair but have never noticed a clump like this, or even single haids tbh but I know they do come out as have to unblock the drain!

Summer2424 · 24/07/2023 20:39

Hi @PurpleRayne89 i don't think that amount of hair loss is anything to worry about x

PurpleRayne89 · 24/07/2023 20:39

My 34.

PurpleRayne89 · 24/07/2023 20:40

@Summer2424 hope so. It’s anxiety provoking given my past hair loss.

OP posts:
roundtable · 24/07/2023 20:41

I'm mixed race with a 3c curl. I usually comb out more than that in the shower so I wouldn't be worried. Depends if it's a change from the norm really I suppose?

Somethingsnappy · 24/07/2023 20:42

Hi op, I felt like I was losing too much hair, and I started taking vitamin D supplement and it helped hugely!

PurpleRayne89 · 24/07/2023 20:48

Thanks everyone for your input. Hair loss is such a scary thing. I’ll update x
