Would anyone be willing to show me their living room decor ? How you've styled the room. What colour sofa cushions ect. I'm utterly clueless what goes together and can't put ideas together

Oh I can tell this is going to be an interesting one...

I don’t want a picture up but ours has wood effect tiles and a large jute rug

wood panelling half way up the wall in off white

a barn style door

about the panelling is red and white thin stipe paper from Laura Ashley

my curtains and deep red and the cushions are neutral and then two floral to pick up the red

Instagram is great though for ideas !!

This thread seems really creepy as both times I’ve just noticed it on the list I thought it said “I can see your living room” like a scary stalker!

Err no. Go on Pinterest.

StrawberryWater · 24/07/2023 17:03

No picture but it’s cream walls, a large fireplace, two leather sofas, a huge window, 6 large stuffed bookshelves and a tv in the corner.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 24/07/2023 17:03

Ours is mostly dark red, grey and white.

Oh and we have oak floorboards with a tasteful purple rug on top.

StrawberryWater · 24/07/2023 17:05

Oh and above each bookcase is an image from space (so Pluto, Saturn, the wow signal etc etc).

We've got wooden floors with a burgundy leather Chesterfield sofa and we're about to change our "theme" colour from burgundy and cream to a smoky navy with hints of silver accessories. I wanted a jewel colour ready for Autumn but my husband vetoed mustard yellow and ochre and we've currently got a red and I'm not convinced a deep green with go with sofa. I do like grey but my inlaws have got grey, so we've opted for Dulux Sapphire Splendour.
Got floaty white voiles at the window and a silvery colour velvet curtain to bring in the silver accessories.
I just hope we like it when we've done it.

I suppose the thing is, stuff on Pinterest is obviously staged, it's not actually lived! So it's hard to tell what is workable in real life.

On the other hand, Mis matched ikea units , multi stained rug, a paint job that's seen better days and curtains which were here when we got here 10 years ago might not be what you're after.

Wowokthanks · 24/07/2023 17:41

Sky blue walls, grey carpet, grey crushed velvet floor length curtains.
Dark grey corner sofa, single chair in the other corner.
Floor length curtains,
2 shelves filled with photos and accessories.
4 fall protection tiles in white and grey couple of cushions on them and a mixture of toys that the baby plays with throughout the day.
TV on the wall,

I think instagram is better than Pinterest because it's predominantly real houses and so it helps me work out what I don't want as much as what I do want.

ResponsibleWalrus · 24/07/2023 17:46

Not mine but I really liked this one I saw on Rightmove

There are looooads of house renovation accounts on Instagram for inspiration. If you follow someone like oh my Edwardian or Victorian house loves it will give you loads of account suggestions for people renovating older properties. If you have a new build try hashtags with the developer name in them. Like #mybovishome

Duck egg blue, a subtle dusky pink with a splash of teal. The carpet is cream as not replaced since we moved in. All the walls are cream and the sofa is neutral so it's easier to get things to tie together.

Ponoka7 · 24/07/2023 17:47

Pick stuff you love. This will be outing. My living room is tacky asf in MN terms. I've got this mural and colour matched my paint. I've got big corner couches in green and a media wall with a big TV. I pick up the colours if I want to add soft textiles. Mid wooden flooring. I've used Murals that I love in all my rooms, then I valspar colour match in B&Q.

Surely that’s what Rightmove is for?

Ponoka7 · 24/07/2023 17:48

Just to add that I took out chimney breasts so I has straight walls to work with. I did keep my original bay windows though and paid out for my doors from Howdens.

NotTerfNorCis · 24/07/2023 17:49

Mine is small with an open stair case and tonnes of books.

riotlady · 24/07/2023 18:14

Ours is sky blue with a darker blue sofa and yellow curtains. Wood effect Lino (not my choice) on the floor with a fluffy blue, white and yellow speckled rug. Big white kallax with Whicker baskets for toys and the dining table has a white tablecloth covered in bees. I don’t think it’s very mumsnetty/“tasteful” but it’s cheerful and child friendly and I like it a lot

tt9 · 24/07/2023 18:24

I'm a bit crazy so ignore my advice if it seems too extreme... I used PowerPoint to put all the different items together to see how they would look before choosing anything (including paint colours). there might be easier ways to do this.

my overall approach for the whole house was to choose an era (victorian) and look, then stick with it. I chose a colour scheme for each room and balanced accordingly. for example I prefer lighter wall colours because although dark colours look stunning, I find they can make the room smaller. I matched carpets close to walls and then curtains in the same colour family but darker and with subtle patterns. using the carpet and curtains as background, I chose plain fabric for sofas (either very pale on same colour scheme or very dark) and then used heavy embroidered fabric for cushions to contrast but again in the same family of colours. I am thinking of adding rugs and am in two minds on whether to add a pop of contrast or keep it in the same colour zone.

ultimately, buy what you love. who cares what anyone else thinks?

Radiat · 24/07/2023 18:34

I’m not putting my own on here, but if you look on Pinterest for “jewel tone living rooms” you’d get the right idea. I like colour!

Mercurial123 · 24/07/2023 18:35

Just look on Rightmove it's really not that difficult, or are you just nosey?
