Maddy70 · 23/07/2023 00:04

Not sure if serious!

You are aware if what's happening in other Med islands at the moment?

YourSpleenIsDamp · 23/07/2023 01:42

Me too - mine are off to Corfu with their dad next week. Hugs OP xx

orangeleavesinautumn · 23/07/2023 01:44

Its a huge worry, isn't it. I would be cancelling, right now, and taking the financial hit if necessary.

toomuchlaundry · 23/07/2023 01:47

@Maddy70 have you seen the news?

Holdupman · 23/07/2023 08:12

He will go mad if I cancel but I feel like I can’t take the risk

I’m hoping and praying the government put a warning out

Yanbu to be worried but yabu to cancel. Risk is always there, fires are nothing new in the height of summer but are getting much more coverage than before.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/07/2023 08:24

To put it into context... on my Facebook memories we were joking about how "chilly" it was in our pit of Cyprus this day a few years ago. It was 32 at 7 in the morning... it had been a lot hotter before then! Its 36 just now apparently.

Its a bit hotter than usual... but its extremely hot most years. Its a bit cooler at the coast (we lived inland, about 30min drive from coast)

Wildfires happen most years in that part of the world. Its big news at the moment as its affecting a tourist resort in Rhodes.

So... yes its extremely hot. Yes you need to take extra precautions especially as UK is so cold in comparison. But its a massive leap to think the island is about to catch fire.

LMNT · 23/07/2023 08:26

YABU to cancel.

The risk is always there.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 23/07/2023 08:29

You do not need to cancel the holiday!
The risk is always there every time you go on holiday and it reaches those temperatures. It did last year.
There's no fires in Cyprus! Why would you cancel??

ohfook · 23/07/2023 08:33

There's no fires in Cyprus right now and a quick google tells you the temperatures there are normal for this time of year.

Gladtoblasto · 23/07/2023 08:35

Cyprus is always ridiculously hot and if fires did start it's a huge island.

AnSolas · 23/07/2023 08:36

What is the risk?

Is he too stupid to make sure DD is protected from the sun and heat as and when needed?
Is he going to insist on going on "adventures" with her at midday for the hoilday to be a sucess or is he happy to find an air-conditioned cool spot and loll about?

Is there any active fires near where they will be staying?

It’s not your holiday to cancel.

What do you mean ‘I can’t take the risk’?

rcat74 · 23/07/2023 08:40

We lived in Cyprus and there are fires every year. You just don’t hear about it. A dog shelter burned down just last week. The Army generally get involved to help. The risk is there every year.

Exactly this.
I was in Rhodes two years ago and there were wild fire then. We had an alert on our phone.
The are frequent fires.

Get a grip OP. If you seriously think that your DC won't be 'safe' with their Dad for a holiday in Cyprus, then you've got bigger problems than the weather !

There won't be any restrictions placed on travel to Cyprus simply because it's very hot at the moment.

Also, if you cancel your DC going, then you'd best expect your Ex to do the same to you at some point, because there is no real 'reason' for DC not to go, it's simply that you're 'worried'.

Unless travel is suspended due to actual wildfires in the actual area they are due to holiday in, then you need to get a grip and wish them a lovely holiday.

mynameiscalypso · 23/07/2023 08:55

I don't think it's very unusual for Cyprus this year is it? Wildfires are normal across the Mediterranean. We've been caught by them before in France. My colleagues are planning a work trip there in a couple of weeks and no concerns have been raised about travelling there.

It is reasonable to worry though, we all worry about our kids. It’s letting the worry win that’s the problem.

xyz111 · 23/07/2023 09:01

It's summer in Europe, they always have high temperatures (apart from the uk at the moment it seems!) wildfires are everywhere, unfortunately it's a fact (there has been some in Scotland!!) But deaths are extremely rare as the area gets evacuated.

You had an alert on your phone. You were not evacuated, or have hundreds of evacuated locals and tourists sleeping on every bare patch of floor in your hotel.

Not quite the same

Bayleaf25 · 23/07/2023 09:07

Cyprus is a huge island and will have measures in place. I don’t think you can stop your daughter going unless the foreign office were specifically to declare it an unsafe country. Many countries have wildfires every year now unfortunately.

StampOnTheGround · 23/07/2023 09:10

Of course you can worry, but the temperature in a Cyprus seems to be fairly normal for this time of year.

I think you're ridiculous for even suggesting cancelling.
