Due to current heatwave and risk of fire ??

I live in Cyprus and this summer feels no different to any other except we got our August weather a bit early.

Every year we have risk of wildfires, it's nothing new.
The last big one we had a couple of years ago was nowhere near any tourist areas.

As PP said, we have UK military here to help if anything happens.

Plus a good fire service, Civil Defence, and a British High Commission to assist Brits abroad in the unlikely event.

That’s really good to hear and helps me thank you. Are they quite good at responding well then ?

He is an adult with parental responsibility.
How would you feel if he cancelled your holiday with your child?

This!!!

Op, you have to accept there's risks anywhere. You could drive to safe Cornwall and have a car crash. Yes there is a risk of wildfires, but that's anywhere where it's hot. Has he taken her before?

LucyLongbody · 23/07/2023 16:07

Yes they are very switched on about fires.

noglow · 23/07/2023 16:10

If it could take my dd’s life then yes

Ok well it could. Every time you get in your car you could die

Cardiff to Dublin is 180 miles apart. So almost half the distance. If you lived in Cardiff and there was an incident in Dublin would you really stop you dd leaving the house?

I am I’m terrified. This year my dog died and my mum has been seriously unwell so I feel very uneasy at the moment anyway and now I’m just terrified my dd will be out there and trapped like those poor people in Greece

Oh OP, I get it, I would be exactly the same as you so no judgement from me!

PollyCreo · 23/07/2023 16:38

I also live in Cyprus and yes it's very hot now but not as bad as Greece. As PPs have said, we've had a few small fires over the past few weeks but they're in the rural areas away from the tourist areas.

A dogs' shelter was destroyed last week and some dogs perished but the community comes together at times like this including local vets who offer free treatment for injured animals.

gogomoto · 23/07/2023 16:43

I mean this kindly but get a grip. Yes it's hot, it's hot every year! In summer Cyprus is very hot, and yes they have fires every year, but none currently. It's like saying you shouldn't go to Bournemouth because there's a fire in Normandy! Yes be worried about your dc, that's natural but not the location

toomuchlaundry · 23/07/2023 16:44

I understand OP. DS has recently come back from his first independent holiday with mates. Got home before heatwave hit the area they had been staying. If he was going now I would be worrying more than I was when he went.

As others have said Cyprus is probably better equipped than most islands if there was an emergency.

Have you got something to do whilst she is away to keep you occupied?

The child is going with her father

Cyprus is 300 miles from Rhodes. Do you avoid driving your car because there was a crash in the next city?

That is a bot of a silly comparison, as the wind is not going to blow the crash up into the air and spread it, is it

Its a different country, a different island, separated by miles and miles of sea. A fire can't spread that distance either.

Dd is 13 and has severe asthma

I thought you were referring to a toddler.

She'll be fine. It's not your holiday to cancel.

Do you think the fire is going to spread from Rhodes to Cyprus?

It's exactly the same comparison you're making. Completely mad to think a holiday in Cyprus is affected by Rhodes.

FantasticallyFabulous · 23/07/2023 19:31

I don’t know if it’s a pandemic thing but increasingly I am seeing parents let their own anxieties affect their kids’ freedom and choices. Whist I sympathise with people with anxiety, I actually think it’s really unfair on the children.

LegendsBeyond · 23/07/2023 19:40

You can’t cancel his holiday! Your daughter is 13, not 3. Try not to get so stressed.

MermaidEyes · 23/07/2023 19:41

I didn't realise dd is 13, I thought she was much younger. I wonder if losing people this year has just made you more aware of bad things happening, and coupled with all the current news around Europe it's making you anxious? Does she normally go away with her dad?

YourSpleenIsDamp · 24/07/2023 00:36

Oh god - now it's Corfu www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66286099

liveforsummer · 24/07/2023 00:45

Whilst it's unusually hot in most of the med, these temps are very common in Cyprus - as a couple of pp's have said slightly more typical in august than July but still very much the norm. I lived there for 10 years and never was there a wild fire in or near any of the holidays resorts. They tend to happen in the mountains.

liveforsummer · 24/07/2023 00:47

You'd be amazed to find how many people think Cyprus is actually in Greece. I suppose then you'd be a bit more concerned when there are issues currently on Corfu and Rhodes

ASGIRC · 24/07/2023 01:13

If you are worried about wild fires in the summer, then Im afraid you cant go on holiday anywhere south of the UK!

In Portugal, it is fire season from July to October, about the same in Spain, South of France, Italy, etc etc etc.
Its hot in the summer!!!

Weve been lucky so far in Portugal this year, no major heat wave just yet! Its even cold-ish at night (you need a cardigan!), So the fires havent started (YAY!!!)

Whats happening in Rhodes and Corfu is obviously scary. And while the fires are active, and people are being evacuated, no one should be flying to those locations. But the risk is there every single year everywhere that is hot.

Supposedly these are thought to be arson. Such idiots around.
