Have you ever had a thread removed when you weren’t actually a troll?

I always wonder this. Sometimes I comment on a thread then it’s gone as it’s ‘not genuine’ etc. But I wonder if sometimes the facts are changed a little to protect confidentiality and really the essence of the story is true? This happened to me many years ago now and I still remember feeling like I was at my lowest then that happened! Everything I had put was actually accurate but the situation must have seemed so awful it was unbelievable to some posters.

I had one removed for not being in the spirit of MN once.

Lastlegsbuckledunder · 18/07/2023 07:45

No but I had a thread shitloads of people seem to have reported to MNHQ as a troll thread, and loads of people came on the thread to accuse me of being a troll too. MNHQ came in the thread to say I was a long standing poster and they weren’t deleting it. Every bloody word of my post really happened to me.

Whenever I see people applauding themselves for being able to spot threads started by trolls I think, ‘yeah, right. Sure you can’ 🙄

Oceansinourway · 18/07/2023 07:45

There was an extremely peculiar one posted by a long established poster a couple of weeks back and MN took it down to look behind the scenes. The poster is still here though.

DailyLaundry · 18/07/2023 07:46

Yes - a totally innocuous one about bedwetting in children which someone reported for being a pee troll! I did get it reinstated when I asked though.

Thank God my kids are way past the potty training and night wetting stage.

Ditto! Years ago though, when I was new.

So did I. I was most put out as it was a thread on Pedants' Corner and it was certainly in the spirit of that part of the site 🤣.

catsgoldfishandtoomanypets · 18/07/2023 07:50

Yes. I posted about my DHs disgusting personal habits. They weren't graphic or illegal and were totally true. MN admin contacted me and agreed they were disgusting habits but took the post down. WTF !

catsgoldfishandtoomanypets · 18/07/2023 07:57

I've also been banned before due to a few posts/ threads being reported. Again, nothing illegal, trolling, goading, racist or discriminating in any way. Except you don't get told you've been banned, you try to log on and your account is locked. But the Message suggests your email address and/or password is wrong. Leaving you thinking you're typing either one of these wrong.

YeahIsaidit · 18/07/2023 08:03

An older account of mine got banned a while ago because I posted a thread saying kids shouldn't be left to run riot in shops...

SpainToday · 18/07/2023 08:05

Yes! It was years ago now, I was posting about training cats to use a cat flap. Heaven knows who I offended and why?

Then a couple of years ago a post of mine was deleted in a fairly benign conversation about noisy children disturbing the peace of their neighbours garden.

SpainToday · 18/07/2023 08:07

PS - I do sometimes change a few facts to protect my own privacy, just in case I ever end up in the Daily Mail, but this wasn’t the case (nor was it required) for the cat flaps thread!

I suspect this happened a lot. You see it often on threads that aren't THAT crazy - sure, most people won't experience that event or combination of events, but across a population someone will.

I think some people really struggle to see beyond their own life.

Of course, the place is also rife with trolls Grin

FromNowOn23 · 18/07/2023 08:15

Exh posted a thread once and I recognised him and joined in and it went on for pages but it was deleted in the end!

Lostinplaces · 18/07/2023 08:18

I had one removed when everyone piled on me because they didn’t believe my husband had sexually assaulted me. He was just being affectionate apparently and posters said they hoped he left me. Was pretty shocking. MN pulled it.

Why would you post about it on here though?
I often wonder that when people start a,thread talking about something grim their partner has done in relation to.personsl.care
I wonder why their first thought is too post it on a public forum🤔

satellitesunshine · 18/07/2023 08:18

yep. i had posted a picture of something i was confused about (thought it was a miscarriage but it looked really weird) didn’t get many responses. a few months later same thing happened again but i didn’t take a picture of that one as it freaked me out so i reposted the first one (because it looked exactly the same) to see if anyone could give advice on what it was and people started saying i was lying as they’d seen the picture before. tried explaining it and got called a troll and weird etc and thread deleted and account deleted 😭

Tiredmummaoftwo · 18/07/2023 08:23

I've been wanting to ask about this! I'm fairly new to MN - someone was posting about their DH cheating the other day with a full blow by blow account and the thread got deleted.. why would they do that? It sounded so genuine and like this person was really going through it. Loads of people had taken ages to comment and it was removed?

So many threads get removed I don't understand it? Are the OP is literally making up the thread and it's all BS?

Tiredmummaoftwo · 18/07/2023 08:25

Are they suggesting the OP*

TimeIhadaNameChange · 18/07/2023 08:33

I think troll threads have their merit and should stay, as the advice will be genuine and might help someone in the future. Reminds me of a problem page in a teen paper years ago: an apology was printed in which a lass said her letter that had been printed a week previously had been a work of fiction. But as the agony aunt said, it might have helped someone else so she was not to worry unduly.

As this thread shows, among the genuine threads are those where details are changed but the reactions are valid. They should be allowed to stand.

AbacusAvocado · 18/07/2023 08:41

I had one deleted - asked for advice as my young child had said odd things that might have indicated abuse.

Was told by MNHQ that they were deleting it because those threads attract unsavoury types to the site.

But it was a genuine concern and I needed advice - ended up talking to a children’s protection charity who talked me through how to question my son without leading him, got more info and thank god all was fine.

He was using some of his words incorrectly and sort of half describing a cartoon and half a situation that reminded him of the cartoon, so it sounded very dodgy but was actually innocent.

Always felt that one should have been allowed to stand even if they wanted to edit out specifics of what was said.

No necessarily because they give a skewed view of the world and i suspect most responders are there for the juicy updates rather than to give advice

rainbowstardrops · 18/07/2023 08:50

I haven't had a thread deleted but I had a post deleted once. Someone was describing the DD's awful behaviour and I said the daughter was acting like a brat. That's it! I've read far worse on here than BRAT 🤣

FrugalKisses · 18/07/2023 08:58

Yes this happened to me. I posted a genuine thread and had been finding it a massive support.

MN didn’t so much as contact me, they just removed the thread and said ‘looks like all is not as it seems with this thread’.

So it was just 100% pure speculation on their part.

Found it really shitty to be honest.

I think that thread got reinstated and the OP was relieved to have the support back.

You always seem to get loads of troll hunters who decide that they think something’s fake and start making sneery comments – I wonder if those people send multiple reports, which ends up seeing genuine threads removed.

LaMaG · 18/07/2023 09:06

I was following one with interest recently, it was a really worrying one about a distraught mum whose teenage son was making awful sexual remarks at his sister, she sounded genuine and it was such a worrying situation I thought it was very unfair to pull it.
