Have tonsillitis, started antibiotics a few days ago but since then I've just felt worse and it now feels as if it's went into my chest. Painful to swallow and now developed a cough which is really sore on chest when I cough.

I'm so fed up of feeling unwell and thought the antibiotics would have helped by now.

I know people have it so much worse, bless them and I should count myself lucky. Just feeling sorry for myself this morning 😢.

I have so much on today that I can't get out of either. Ugh.

Handhold my love. I'm sorry you feel ill, it's always harder at night as well. Hopefully the meds will kick in soon. My DD is also struggling with a sore throat, hence why I'm awake at this time.

Can you stick on a podcast or a meditation to try and relax?

Thank you! I hope your DD feels better soon also, there seems to be quite a bit doing it's rounds just now.

Yeah could stick on a meditation, good idea, thanks!

Antibiotics should be helping if it's been a few days now- can you call your GP surgery when they open? Until then could you try some lemsip? Good luck x

DreamTheMoors · 17/07/2023 05:32

I hate sore throats. When I was young I got them all the time - strep throat was a regular visitor.
When I was 15, I got my tonsils out and that was the end of that. I don’t miss them.
Try gargling with warm salt water or do you have any regular aspirin? Like plain, old-fashioned aspirin. Crush a couple up and mix them with warm water and gargle with that.

I think I may have bigger problems - I’ve just realised I’ve turned into my mother. Nooooo!!

Feel better soon, @popicenice❤️

chrystlha · 17/07/2023 05:35

Tonsillitis really hurts doesn't it. People who have had it will know exactly what you're going through. It was so bloody painful for me.
You can get numbing spray which really works from Boots. It's such a relief. Can't remember what it's called but any chemist will know. and you can prescribe yourself medicinal ice cream - cooling.
You're ill. It's not just a sort throat etc it wipes you out. Look after yourself. 🤒

FloofCloud · 17/07/2023 05:38

Tonsillitis can be awful sometimes I feel your pain 😞
I'd also gargle with warm salty water and await the antibiotics.
Did they take a swab? May be worth a call if they did to ensure the antibiotics are correct for you.r bacteria type

Please have a quick read on Quincy.

make sure you do not have this. I was told I had tonsillitis and was in absolute agony, couldn’t eat, talked weird (voice changed like Minnie Mouse) turned out I had Quincy. (It’s an ancestor in your throat) make sure it isn’t that.
sorry to scare, I don’t mean to. I knew nothing of this at the time and boy I don’t want to know about it again.
sending healing hugs.

Rarewaxwing · 17/07/2023 05:47

When I had glandular fever many years ago, the doctor advised me to gargle with dissolvable aspirin. Might be worth trying that if you have any in the house.

A really sore throat is so painful. You have all my sympathy.

BB25 · 17/07/2023 06:02

I also was treated for tonsillitis and the antibiotics didn’t help! Turned out I had glandular fever,I felt awful! Someone mentioned a numbing spray for your throat,I also used that and it did help.Hope you feel better soon!!!

This is my definite go to for a sore throat, (or sore mouth I get from food intolerance)

I did think you might recommend a trip to OP’s local witch doctor.

Turns out you meant abscess and not ancestor.

Best of luck OP, sounds absolutely miserable and I hope you find something that gives you relief soon!

TookTheBook · 17/07/2023 06:37

Antibiotics should have started improving things by now please contact the GP asap

Serena73 · 17/07/2023 06:39

Another experience here of being misdiagnosed with tonsillitis and it actually being glandular fever.

I’ve also had tonsillitis and the antibiotics started working instantly.

LakieLady · 17/07/2023 06:39

I had my tonsils out over 50 years ago, but I can still remember how utterly dreadful it made me feel.

Hopefully, the ABs will start working soon, and I second the suggestion of gargling with soluble aspirin.

Serena73 · 17/07/2023 06:40

You need to get an emergency appointment if you can

partypompoms · 17/07/2023 06:46

Tonsillitis is awful. People underestimate it and feel really sorry for you

Cheesusisgrate · 17/07/2023 06:54

Agree with others you need to go back to gp because antibiotics should be helping now.

Order actual chicken broth. Organic if you can. Research shows it's not just nan's tale it helps

Mommasgotabrandnewbag · 17/07/2023 06:57

Get back to the Dr @popicenice antibiotics should have kicked in by now. They will try you on a different kind if necessary.

Cabbagey · 17/07/2023 07:00

Throat infections are really awful. The last one I had made it agonising to swallow, so I instead had to periodically spit into a cup. I felt like sickly Victorian child, tottering round the house coughing up blood into a cup full of spit. Hideous!

Wishing you a swift recovery.

ZebraD · 17/07/2023 07:25

Ooops definitely meant abscess ha ha..sorry

moose62 · 17/07/2023 07:27

I get loads of sore throats and bouts of tonsillitis. I alternate gargling with warm salt water and dispersible aspirin. I find it really helps as does sitting warm drinks. For severe pain alternate paracetamol and aspirin every two hours, up to the daily limit. These were all things my doctor told me to do and it helps.

Oh yes the spitting, I remember having to do that, it’s was gross and so painful! Couldn’t swallow my own saliva 😱

OP your antibiotics might need the dose increasing or a different type.

storminabuttercup · 17/07/2023 07:31

Agree with others, make another appointment, i had tonsillitis many times, the final time it progressed to Quincy and I was hospitalised, that was the time antibiotics didn't work, not trying to scare you but if they aren't working it could be something else as others suggest. I really hope you feel better soon. Look after yourself

abbs1 · 17/07/2023 07:32

Tonsillitis is awful you poor thing. I'd definitely get back to the GP as antibiotics should be working now.

I'd ask for a blood test for them to rule out glandular fever. When I had it, I had pain further down in my chest, rib area as my spleen was swollen etc. Antibiotics unfortunately don't work for glandular but the numbing spray did help a bit.

Sending hugs OP. 🫂

FlamingoQueen · 17/07/2023 07:38

My dd uses strepsils throat lozenges - they were a life saver when she last had tonsillitis.
But, if you don’t improve in the next few hours, then you may need to go back to the Drs - my dd has also had strep A which was worse than the usual tonsillitis.
