Who even buys The Sun in 2023?

In light of the current situation and given The Suns track record of generally being a terrible newspaper with diabolical unscrupulous form to manipulate stories, I am curious to know who actually buys it and reads it?

It’s a genuine question because what is bothering me is the disturbing thought that there are people who read The Sun and actually believe what it publishes or even thinks it’s ok to publish it in the first place. Anyone who buys it is essentially saying they are ok with the methodology and lengths The Suns journalists go to in order to get a front page story and I’m wondering what it is they get from absorbing that kind of bad energy every day?

That the Nation and the press were so distracted by this story whilst other far more newsworthy issues were being ignored or lightly reported on is in itself mind boggling and frightening, they literally created a storm out of very little and scores of people were drawn in like it was a cliff hanger from Line of Duty.

Surely it’s time all the major retailers reconsidered selling it, what good does it actually bring to society? I agree there’s the freedom of speech aspect and this is my opinion but the tactics they employ to manipulate and cause divide amongst people are truly despicable and outdated, is it just ok and accepted to be this low?

I started watching because you suggested it but didn’t say what the link was. It was so clearly didactic and preachy, without an attempt at balance, I thought:

1. Who put this together?
2. Why have they put this together? What’s their agenda?

To be honest, I did not care enough about it to pursue my two questions enough after the bit when it gossiped about Murdoch’s parenting techniques - allegedly setting his children in competition with each other, without providing any examples, also hand-picking some very small quotes of his, from a very long career, to insinuate - something…. dah dah DAH! ….. yet to be revealed….. I really cba.

Really you could do the same job on anyone who is successful if you fancied it. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have had my own misgivings about the Murdoch empire and, in principle, I am opposed to media moguls- especially those who interfere in politics. However this video is obvious propaganda. I have better things to do with my time than watch the whole thing then check on the credentials of its creators to learn about their agenda. I prefer to do my own thinking.

I'm a Scouser living in Yorkshire. Every time I see that grotesque article in the supermarket I try my best to cover it with a different publication. We will continue to proactively take a stand against the s*n until the day it is closed down.

If you’ve got valid arguments against the paper - and I’m not saying you haven’t - make them. Don’t arrogate to yourself the right to decide what others shouldn’t read.

What qualifies you to judge everybody else's principles?

Excuse me. I gave it a fair couple of minutes with an open mind, but the lack of evidence provided for the claims made, the lack of balance, and the gossipy, personal and sensationalist nature of the style, informed me that this is a poor quality propaganda piece. I made an informed choice that it was not worth another eight minutes of my time.

I am quite within my rights to write off something which presents as low quality in the first couple of minutes. It’s not like you even were able to give it a ringing endorsement either. Just a random person providing a random link to a random propaganda piece. What on Earth do you expect?

I think it's a terrible rag. But I don't assume everyone who reads it is thick or a Neanderthal. My dad used to buy it. He also bought broadsheets, local papers and other tabloids. A bit of variety of writing styles and opinions. He absolutely loved language in all its forms and got great enjoyment from the wordplay in the Sun headlines and the sensational presentation. I have never bought it myself - I wouldn't contribute to the already overflowing coffers of Rupert Murdoch et al - but I try not to make assumptions about those who do.

I read (possibly on here) that sitting on newspaper could lessen travel sickness. We were travelling early one morning and DS felt sick. There were very few papers available at the service station and so I bought the cheapest one which was the star. I would question whether there was any news in it at all!

Back in the 80s the Sun and the Mirror were both selling upwards of 3 million copies a day. Now all print media has plummeted and I don't really see why newspapers are still treated as so influential.

They claimed Liverpool supporters in the Leppings Lane wilfully urinated on others. In fact, this urine was the urine which the bodies of the supporters who were unlawfully killed released at the point of death.

They stated Liverpool supporters looted the pockets of the dying as they lay on the pitch. Video evidence shows these supporters were actually looking for ID. Looking for these people's names.

They blamed the failings and inadequacies of the South Yorkshire police and Sheffield Wednesday F.C. on supporters.
