Who even buys The Sun in 2023?

In light of the current situation and given The Suns track record of generally being a terrible newspaper with diabolical unscrupulous form to manipulate stories, I am curious to know who actually buys it and reads it?

It’s a genuine question because what is bothering me is the disturbing thought that there are people who read The Sun and actually believe what it publishes or even thinks it’s ok to publish it in the first place. Anyone who buys it is essentially saying they are ok with the methodology and lengths The Suns journalists go to in order to get a front page story and I’m wondering what it is they get from absorbing that kind of bad energy every day?

That the Nation and the press were so distracted by this story whilst other far more newsworthy issues were being ignored or lightly reported on is in itself mind boggling and frightening, they literally created a storm out of very little and scores of people were drawn in like it was a cliff hanger from Line of Duty.

Surely it’s time all the major retailers reconsidered selling it, what good does it actually bring to society? I agree there’s the freedom of speech aspect and this is my opinion but the tactics they employ to manipulate and cause divide amongst people are truly despicable and outdated, is it just ok and accepted to be this low?

The racing coverage is good.

I’ll tell you what’s dumber than reading the sun, or the mail. Continually banging on about how people who don’t think or vote the way you think they should are stupid/evil/uneducated, then being surprised when you convince no one of your arguments.
this sort of person has learned precisely nothing from brexit, or post 2016 politics full stop. They can’t. And that’s really stupid.

Agree,

Also believing only what one 'approved' paper says. Both the mail and the sun for all their faults post stories that other papers/news outlets supress. The Sun is also far more regulated than the wild west that is social media

The most depressing fact is yet again this desire to stifle the press, only report on what is seen as morally superior.

Hintofreality · 13/07/2023 11:46

Uneducated, racist, homophobic scruffs is the target market.

Flapjacker48 · 13/07/2023 11:46

Lower socio-economic groups. D/E mainly. Not even C2s these days.

Lots of people read the Sun and Mail sadly. I work in retail and noticed the Mail do lots of 'win your mortgage/utility bills paid for a year' competitions rather than addressing why people can't pay their bills.

And the Daily Express which I think is actually worse than the Daily Heil.

Surely we can arrange for these types to have their purchasing ability restricted? Only permitted to buy from a government approved list?
oh but we have a Tory government! Horrors! What to do

MissyB1 · 13/07/2023 11:52

It’s interesting as my in laws would definitely consider themselves well educated, Fil went to private school, but they both read and believe the Daily Mail! One thing I’ve learned in life is that you can be well educated but not very intelligent. Sadly that sums them up.

For anyone defending The Sun this is definitely worth a watch.

I ve never been looked at it much less paid for it but can't understand why anybody would ever, never mind in 2023.

There's a thread on Twitter which starts off with the Sun's treatment of Jeremy Brett in the 1980s after he suffered mental health issues following his wife's death. Some of the stuff on that thread is disgusting, I had no idea that half the stuff had happened, apart from their Hillsborough lies.

I have a friend who used to read the NOTW, I mean WHY?

I think it’s ironic, lots of people suggesting people are ignorant, scruffy, uneducated, etc, for reading tabloids….. when that kind of snobbery smacks of insecurity about one’s own social standing - needing to be seen reading the right thing but not seen reading the wrong thing. Lest the judgement falls on them - I’m sure. It doesn’t suggest a curious and clever mind, or free and independent thought - it just suggests “please don’t associate me with those people”.

The only exception I make is for Scousers. I think it’s fair enough that they boycott.

This is quite amusing - I watched for the first couple of minutes and the presentation is using loads of gossipy tabloid-esque techniques to hook people, make the video impactful and sensationalist!

Do you or don’t you like tabloids?

TangledRoots · 13/07/2023 12:22

BTW - I am not defending The Sun per se, I am defending Sun readers.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 13/07/2023 12:28

Well the Sun and Times do not give out their sales figures anymore but from what I have read the Sun was in 2020 the most read paper and very probably still is although in common with all newspapers circulation has dropped.
