To think that bacon which remains in the pack once opened

Is not a hygiene risk?

When I open a pack of bacon and use some of the rashers I leave the remainder in the pack, cover it again with the flap I have peeled back and put it back in the fridge.

Ok or not ok? ( I’ve already wiped the unopened pack before it goes in the fridge).

I move mine to a sealed container. 'Tis fine.

rileynexttime · 06/07/2023 12:26

Of course it's ok . Why wouldn't it be ?

TinySaltLick · 06/07/2023 12:26

How long for? A few days - yes of course that is fine

Two weeks? Less fine

mydudero · 06/07/2023 12:27

I always put an open pack inside a sandwich bag that click seals, and I'd make sure it's used in a few days... but I am really fussy with raw meat. In reality it's probably fine to just put it back in as you are!

Hazelnuttella · 06/07/2023 12:28

If it seals back down then fine. If the flap peels up then I put it in a Tupperware.

Wingedharpy · 06/07/2023 12:29

Resealable flap = OK.
Flappy loose flap = needs covering with something else to keep airtight.
6 months old = bin it.

Humidititties · 06/07/2023 12:29

Yeah I put it in a sealable sandwich bag too otherwise the ends can curl up and dry out.

Sewannoying · 06/07/2023 12:31

Bacon doesn’t last long in this house, so we just leave it in the pack. It will be eaten within a few days.

Talipesmum · 06/07/2023 12:31

It depends if anything in your fridge might touch the raw meat. Our fridge is generally pretty crowded and a half open bacon packet could easily get shuffled next to something and potential raw meat contamination could occur. So I’d usually put it in a box or clingfilm or similar over the top. If the fridge was half empty and I thought I’d be using it soon, I might leave it.

QueefQueen80s · 06/07/2023 12:33

I never understand these rules, I've always left it opened in fridge, I reheat rice, pre make baby bottles and all been fine.

CatsSnore · 06/07/2023 12:33

I put the half empty packet in a sandwich bag, but have a meat drawer so it doesn't really matter if it's opened and going to be used in a day or so. Usually one packet does me and dc. We like 3 to 4 rashers in a sandwich.

Yep same .

Thanks all.

Normally just leave it in the pack. Admittedly a pack is normally used within two days. It is usually used in sandwiches one day and then for pasta or something the next. Meat has it own shelf and is always in their own containers so they are unlikely to come in contact. The peel packing on the brand I buy reseals very well.

GoodChat · 06/07/2023 12:45

As long as it still looks and smells ok it's fine

@QueefQueen80s it's not some mystical knowledge, it's really simple science. Take a basic food hygiene course.

ChickpeaPie · 06/07/2023 12:50

Why do you wipe the pack?

lljkk · 06/07/2023 12:51

Am pretty sure we're guilty of leaving raw bacon in open container with just loose flap for .. .at least 2 weeks. It's highly cured. It lasts fine.

Why? I've always reheated rice and have also cooked full chickens from frozen which is totally frowned on. I'm 50 years old and I've never been ill from this nor killed anyone

oldwhyno · 06/07/2023 12:53

vaguely covered with flap and fine for a week or so.

Frabbits · 06/07/2023 12:53

Most people do this and it's fine. I prefer to wrap in clingfilm though as it means it won't dry out so quickly.

liveforsummer · 06/07/2023 12:54

I put most open things in a sandwich bag or wrap it in foil. Small crowded fridge so liable to get tipped or have something put on top of it

Izzy24 · 06/07/2023 12:54

🤷‍♀️
Placatory behaviour 😂

OP posts:
Bearpawk · 06/07/2023 12:54

In an ideal world I'd put it in a small Tupperware as my fridge gets pretty crowded so something else could easily find its way into the open packet and get bacon juice on it.
I only bother to do that about half the time though.

BCCoach · 06/07/2023 12:55

To those describing bacon as 'raw meat', do you know what bacon is?
