To think that bacon which remains in the pack once opened

Izzy24 · 06/07/2023 12:24

Is not a hygiene risk?

When I open a pack of bacon and use some of the rashers I leave the remainder in the pack, cover it again with the flap I have peeled back and put it back in the fridge.

Ok or not ok? ( I’ve already wiped the unopened pack before it goes in the fridge).

I have reusable ziplock bags that I put opened fridge stuff in. Annoys the life out of me when things are put back in open.

Flidina · 06/07/2023 14:30

Always open it and wrap the opened pack in foil. Use within a couple of days.

How do you keep those bags clean between use?

I handwasj them, and basically they are always in use

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/07/2023 14:35

Just cook the whole lot and sprinkle bacon bits on everything you eat that week. No hygiene risk and you'll be happy all the time.

IRL someone can expect you to do the task, or they can have a stated opinion on how to do the task, but not both.

strawberrywhisk · 06/07/2023 14:38

Sorry, I soak and swish them in hot soapy water, then rinse in hot water, wipe with a micro cloth and dry upside down

skyeisthelimit · 06/07/2023 14:40

I put all meats once opened, whether raw or otherwise, into an Ikea food bag, they click seal across the top and keep it airtight. I was brought up by my mum to not leave anything unsealed or open, for hygiene/contamination/safety purposes.

ie, bacon not sealed falls out of fridge onto floor, equals ruined/dog eats it before you can pick it up Grin. bacon in sealed bag falls out of fridge onto floor, pick up and return to fridge.

Who are you placating? I think that’s more the issue here.

Spot on!

I have been caring for someone for the last two weeks who is having a really tough time. The bacon issue was one of those straw/camel back situations. I have bitten my lip more til (which is fine - I’m going home tomorrow) but somehow the bacon one tipped me over the edge! Which is why I’m on here being ridiculous!

This is the perfect answer - both parts!

You're a good egg. It sounds like you just needed to get it off your chest.
Doing it here rather than towards the person you are caring for was wise.

Wrap in paper and foil. Roll it up first for extra protection and handy shape if freezing.

Yeah, it’s a kind of meat that is sold raw but can be cooked for safe consumption.

It’s not raw though is it? It’s been cured. And sometimes smoked. You could eat it uncooked with no ill effect.

OneTC · 06/07/2023 12:58

It'll be fine until it's not

How profound and wise

Am pretty sure we're guilty of leaving raw bacon in open container with just loose flap for .. .at least 2 weeks. It's highly cured. It lasts fine.

It's not fine you need to eat within 48 hours.

Google says it has to be cooked.

Izzy24 · 06/07/2023 15:44

@Talipesmum and @TheOrigRights thank you both 😊. It did help! Have regained my equilibrium!

It's fine, officially it's eat within 48 hours I suspect but i keep from one weekend to the next and never had an issue. Meats that are fully cooked to a high temperature rarely cause problems

NewNovember · 06/07/2023 15:25

If it looks fine and smells fine then it gets eaten in this house, once it's decanted into a sealable bag it lasts ages

gogomoto · 06/07/2023 15:46

@QueefQueen80s Ditto

Humidititties · 06/07/2023 15:47

TheOrigRights · 06/07/2023 14:28

You are cooking the food following recommendations then. Recommendations which are not frowned upon. So what is the point you are making?

Well, a lot of people say you're not supposed to reheat rice or cook chicken from frozen, I was merely saying I do and how I do it. I wasn't trying to make a point

Zippedydoo123 · 06/07/2023 15:53

We eat opened bacon up to seven days of it first being opened and it still tastes great.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 06/07/2023 15:58

FlameGrilledSquirrel · 06/07/2023 13:11

What is this "remaining bacon" you speak of?

You're not buying it in sufficient quantities

KeepSellChuck · 06/07/2023 16:15

I eat raw bacon. Have done for almost 50 years. I'm still here!

Largeslice · 06/07/2023 16:17

Leftover bacon 🤣

You need to up your game OP
