Yorkshire Building Society closing accounts down on people with views that don't agree with their policy

So the story goes that if you have a view on Brexit or LGBTQ?+ that isn't inline or in agreement with the people that know what view is right at The Yorkshire Building Society then they can close your account?

AIBU - stick to the day job and provide mortgages and savings

YABU - they can decide if the values of their customers don't align to shut them down

Not really this is a political bank account which monzo does not allow.

ResisterRex · 28/07/2023 11:34

What is a political bank account and why did they first do business with her?

What happens to us as a society in terms of a plurality of views and debate, if no pressure groups or political groups can open bank accounts?

A political bank account is for a political party.

Plenty of groups can open bank accounts.

Stop being obtuse

Political groups and parties can open bank accounts.

The accounts they use are more stringently regulated than your average current account.

Not all banks offer this service - Monzo apparently being one of them.

It is clear the account was opened in error and Monzo should have rejected the application. But now they've realised the error it is rectified.

Farage disagrees with it and says he stands with Gina Miller. Is he being obtuse? Is she?

"This is just plain wrong at every level. I stand with @ thatginamiller."

Two people at opposite ends of the Brexit debate, affected by the same issue. You don't have to agree with someone else's views to realise that what's going on, stinks.

Gina Miller has thanked Farage for his tweet

Oops, half the comments on this thread didn’t age well, did they.

A lot of egg on a lot faces. The workesters have gone very quiet.

Indeed, they saw his name, saw a DM link and immediately jumped on the he is a liar, the DM isn't a reliable source surely use a better one and various other comments.

I don't like him but it's clear that banks lie. The CEO has resigned due to her and the actions of the bank she represented. He has been apologised to and others say they also have accounts closed by a number of banks. Those are the ones that don't mind coming forward.

Since when are banks there to moralise they should stick to banking. He isn't heading up a terrorist cell just has views on things like LGBTQ?+ etc that many don't support and some views Brexit that lots voted for.

I was in the minority who voted Remain in the Referendum. Leave won. I accept that. I always believed there should have been a 2/3 majority to overturn the status quo but it was set as a simple majority and I accept that too. That's having respect for democracy.

The referendum was 2016 - seven years ago.

It has been reported that there were over 80 references to Brexit in the 40 pages of Coutts' Committee records relating to the Bank's decision to boot Farage.

That sounds like an obsession. And a worrying disrespect for the democracy of a country whose taxpayers bailed out NatWest to the tune of £45bn in 2008 and whose Government owns nearly 40% of its shares.

I am not surprised that Farage and Miller, uber-Brexiteer and uber-Remainer, are united on the issue of political interference by Banks.

Miller has a weak argument since Monzo has a policy of refusing all Political Party bank accounts.

However, what Monzo demonstrates is that, without legislation or significant shareholding to compel Banks to offer services to political parties, that Banks have the power to determine whether we have ANY political parties.

No wonder their authoritarian, moralistic staff have a disrespect for democracy and think they are above the law.

Very true.
