To ask if your child’s secondary school has a pool?

My local private school has an indoor swimming pool. Other than that no local secondaries do. One nearby used to but it was shut down due to heating being unaffordable. Recently, I was visiting my sister who lives miles away and her DS15 is currently doing a swimming unit in PE as his (state) school has a pool. I would assume most primary’s would be too small to have one. Aibu to ask if 1) your child’s school has a pool and 2) do you think your dc benefit from their school having one

My secondary school (state) in Indian did in the 1980s. It was wonderful. I swam competitively, so it was really handy for training!

The DC's primary school was practically next door to a pool, and they made the most of this.

One local secondary that I know of has s pool, but not the one ds goes to.

Equalitea · 30/06/2023 12:14

No state schools here have a pool.

jeaux90 · 30/06/2023 12:15

And yes my DD14 does benefit as she is a not a strong swimmer, but they also host swimming galas with other schools which is nice.

ShinyBandana · 30/06/2023 12:19

My older son has a pool at his secondary school and my primary aged son has school swimming lessons at the local council pool.

A local primary rented a temporary pool. Apparently it was cheaper than hiring a bus/coach to take the kids elsewhere and they had space for it on site. I don’t know who they used by assume it was a company like this

CurlewKate central Scotland.

Capitulatingpanda · 30/06/2023 12:24

None of secondaries do but local C of E primary does because a swim school has lessons there evenings, weekends and holidays.

Flowerblooms · 30/06/2023 12:25

Primary school had their own pool, we then moved boroughs and current secondary school also has a swimming pool. The 3 secondary schools nearest all have swimming pools.

Tiredalwaystired · 30/06/2023 12:29

No pool and no swimming on the curriculum at secondary.

primary bussed them to a local pool for one term only. Lots missed it entirely due to covid.

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 30/06/2023 12:30

Yes, but I live in Germany

Maraudingmarauders · 30/06/2023 12:32

We had one in my secondary school - a state run grammar. We had swimming lessons all year every year. But it broke when I was in Yr 10 and didn't reopen whilst I was there (cracked tiles, so not water tight or something). Not sure if they have it now or not!

KnottyKnitting · 30/06/2023 12:36

There are two high schools in the town where I live and both have a pool. There is also a pool in one of the 6 primary schools.

B1993 · 30/06/2023 19:52

I live in a town in the East Midlands. When I was in (state) secondary school, we had a pool. The school site was rebuilt and don't think they had a pool installed in that building.

The other local secondary school is attached to leisure centre so have onsite pool facilities through that. It is also a state school, obviously.

SpringleDingle · 30/06/2023 19:53

Yes. A normal state secondary in Shropshire. The local primary schools also use this secondary schools pool.

Shinyandnew1 · 30/06/2023 19:54

The primary school I went to (locally) had and still has a pool. My secondary had one but it doesn’t any more. My own kids’ schools didn’t have pools.

ArnoldBee · 30/06/2023 19:56

My secondary school was attached to a leisure centre that had a pool. We didn't get to use as it was too busy with kids from the local primaries using it.

UndercoverCop · 30/06/2023 19:56

DS' state primary does, not a fancy area, 35% pupil premium. 4 form intake though.
Does mean he gets school swimming lessons from reception

UndercoverCop · 30/06/2023 19:57

I also went to a big standard comp in a fairly rough part of East London. School shared a site with a leisure centre, we had all our PE lessons there including swimming

Mangogogogo · 30/06/2023 19:58

Mine did when I was a kid and my kids does too. I had no idea it wasn’t normal! 🤯

non private schools in north east

TrueScrumptious · 30/06/2023 19:59

Never really heard of a school having a pool. My Dd works in a special school and there is a very small pool there -it used more as therapy, though.

HollyFern1110 · 30/06/2023 20:00

Yes, there are 3 secondary schools in our town. All 3 used to have a pool but now only 2 do. There is only 1 private school & they have no sports hall or proper field let alone a pool.

Lemontango · 30/06/2023 20:03

My DC’s primary and secondary have swimming pools both state schools. I think it’s good as they didn’t need to get on a coach/mini bus to go to swimming lessons in primary and in secondary they have a term of swimming. The pool at the primary was paid for by PTFA many years ago. Both schools are big though, primary 4 form entry and secondary over 2500 pupils.

Craftsandgardens · 30/06/2023 20:04

As far as I know, no state secondary school in my town has a pool, but there are good community sports facilities. Most of the private secondaries have pools.
Unusually, one of the state primaries in the town has its own pool. Each year group has swimming lessons.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2023 20:29

The secondaries that I know with pools either tend to be small town or naice suburbs that act as local leisure centres/ shared site with a leisure centre.
I don't know of any at city schools that aren't very peripheral.
I don't know of any primaries with pools either.

Both my primaries did. I know one has been filled in at some point. That was at the infants and the juniors never used it.

Wbeezer · 30/06/2023 20:32

We no longer even have a public swimming pool in the whole county!

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 30/06/2023 20:35

Primary school has a small outdoor one, used in the summer term and families use it during the summer holidays (90-100 kids). Secondary school has the village sports centre attached to it so large indoor poor (1500 kids)
