To ask if your child’s secondary school has a pool?

My local private school has an indoor swimming pool. Other than that no local secondaries do. One nearby used to but it was shut down due to heating being unaffordable. Recently, I was visiting my sister who lives miles away and her DS15 is currently doing a swimming unit in PE as his (state) school has a pool. I would assume most primary’s would be too small to have one. Aibu to ask if 1) your child’s school has a pool and 2) do you think your dc benefit from their school having one

One state primary school round here does, none of the state secondaries do but the 2 private secondary schools in the town both have indoor pools.

The private schools allow the state primaries to use the pools for the national curriculum swimming lessons. There is no charge to the parents so I am guessing they don't charge the primary schools for using them.

Both private secondaries rent them out to swimming clubs etc at the weekend.

My DCs school doesn’t but mine did.
Both Private

lavagal · 30/06/2023 11:41

Very lucky our DD state primary has an indoor pool

TheSnowyOwl · 30/06/2023 11:42

Still at primary school but they have a pool.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 30/06/2023 11:45

DS's school has one but it has been closed for repair since 2019,
There is a junior school locally that has a small pool.

Comefromaway · 30/06/2023 11:46

I live in an area with the middle school system and one of the First Schools has a pool!

The state secondary school my niece went to also has a pool. a few other schools used to but they were closed down.

Comety · 30/06/2023 11:47

I once manged the site of a school with a pool and swore I'd never work at another school with a pool ever...

It was terrifying. You've got people with some training, but who are generalists, not experts managing something where the consequences if getting it wrong are huge amd there's always pressure to cut costs

The time, money and energy that went into the pool was completely disproportionate to any benefit of not having to travel a short distance to a public pool imo.

RainyDaysAndGlumDays · 30/06/2023 11:48

DC's secondary school does, but he only got to use it for a half-term in Year 11 (and once in Y8). DC2's primary doesn't (and he hasn't done swimming at school at all, he is in Y6) but other local primary has pool onsite. Am aware of other schools in nearby villages that do have their own, small pools (usually outside). All state schools.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/06/2023 11:50

My junior school had one and the local secondary school had one. Don't k is if they still do.

MenopauseSucks · 30/06/2023 11:51

My private school did - semi covered.

The local state school was based on the same site as the town's leisure centre so they would book sessions in the pool.

mewkins · 30/06/2023 11:52

Two secondaries and at least one primary in my town do. Plus there's been loads of investment in the local public pool in the last two years.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 30/06/2023 11:53

All state schools in my local area have indoor pools. My school in the 70s has a pool and we went there for lessons when we were in primary school. The pool then was pretty horrible as were the changing rooms. Now all the local authority schools have lovely pools. Swimming and other water based sports are on the curriculum and the pools are open to the public in the evening. As a teacher, I used to swim once a week before classes started.

CheshireSplat · 30/06/2023 11:53

Interesting question! I'm in Chester. There are 6 state schools and one has a pool (it's jointly the school's and the local leisure centre).

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 30/06/2023 11:53

I should have emphasised all secondary schools

Sweetsweetlike1 · 30/06/2023 11:59

The London 'state' secondary school i went to had a pool, and all these years later it still has a pool. Apparently other schools and organisations hire about use of the pool also, so it brings additional finance for the school

Phos · 30/06/2023 11:59

My daughter is at a private primary and it doesn't have one. There's no space for one to go to be honest.

There is one state primary that has one but it gets so much council funding it's untrue; if they asked for solid gold taps, they'd get it. I think one of the special schools also has one but it's tiny. More a hydrotherapy resource than swimming per se.

None of the local state secondaries have one. One of the two local independents does. No-one else is allowed to use that though. They were approached to ask if they would be willing to rent at weekends to swimming schools etc but they said no. Maybe because it's a part boarding school. I don't know.

Our town swimming pool shut down due to the council's incompetence so now if schools are to offer swimming, the kids need to be bussed to neighbouring towns.

DC’s school had trained up the caretaker staff as pool operatives, and then there were other duty managers that be called upon if there needed to be anything more complicated like backwashing.

funinthesun19 · 30/06/2023 12:03

My DS’s school does.

CurlewKate · 30/06/2023 12:03

@LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand "Now all the local authority schools have lovely pools."
Seriously? Presumably you're not in the UK?

No. None of the state schools do I don’t think. My secondary age DC doesn’t swim at school. They nearly closed our local pool two years ago (saved by a community action group) which would have meant a large number of schools couldn’t access a pool at all.

RuthW · 30/06/2023 12:08

The one dd went to did. The one she teaches at doesnt. No idea about the rest.

kezziecakes · 30/06/2023 12:08

My child is at primary. Lots of the local primaries have them but I don't think we miss out as when they do swimming they walk the 10 minutes to the nearest high school and swim there. I don't think any of the local high schools don't have a pool but no idea if it's worth it for them, just seems to be a way to make money by hiring it out at weekends.

Plushmush · 30/06/2023 12:12

One of my DC went to a secondary school that had a pool. It was rebuilt when they were there and the new building also had a pool but with major issues so it was unusable.

The only time they ever used the pool was as part of a swimming club at the primary school next door before attending secondary.

MaltbyMaeve · 30/06/2023 12:13

The primary school next to us has a pool (albeit it's more of a large paddling pool), my sons indy school has a big pool (but it serves the whole all the way through school)

jeaux90 · 30/06/2023 12:13

My DD14 private school has an outdoor pool which they use just for summer term.

My partners kid, his primary state school (weirdly was also my primary school) has an indoor pool. But not in a proper building as such, also mainly used in the summer.
