to prefer cans that you open with a can opener rather than a ring pull?

Just opened a can of tuna and a can of sweetcorn and as usual the lids won't easily come entirely off, making them more tricky to fully empty and rinse out for recycling.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to own a can opener - or am I just a hopeless old Boomer who should get in the sea?

Ting pull can opener aid. The £1.99 one has over 2 thousand good reviews by the look of it.

Ting! Ring!

What magic tins are you buying?

Heinz beans. Baked, not magic (though I've never tried planting them to see if a giant beanstalk grows).

You just lift the ring far enough that the other end digs in and breaks the seal, then you pull. Are you lot trying to pull without breaking the seal first?

Anyonebut · 26/06/2023 20:26

There are devices to help with the rings, something like this

I have owned many, many tin opener's which promise good things only to end up crap after a few months. So yet, I prefer a ring pull.

Ooer we've entered the world of ... scary! 🤣

Do they still do the cans with a little key? I wonder how many fingers have been lost to those.

I think that’s reserved now for corned beef only.

About 40 years ago my sister & I found a pear-shaped tin of Ye Olde Oak ham in a shop on a small island in Greece. I was so keen to have the full gelatine experience that we left it in the fridge for a week. We finished our shift, went back to our room & the key broke about half way round. We had to stab it with steely knives, prise the tin apart with a two-fork jaws of life just to end up with a plate of goo studded with tin filings

UnNiddeRides · 26/06/2023 23:00

To be clear, it sounds like we were on some kind of ‘ham dig’. It was just a happy combination. I admit it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a tin of ham. I’d probably just go with the tin-opener from the get-go.

jackstini · 26/06/2023 23:06

I can't use a normal tin opener (dodgy wrists) so ring pulls would be better

However, I have an electric one which is much better than manual or ring pull!

Yum! I wonder if you can still get that tinned ham? 🤔

Sardine cans - now there's a thing of beauty. If they disappear we'll all be sorry, like when they did away with foil and paper wrappers on KitKats 😤

Every time I grab one without ring pull I always wonder why they still make those.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 27/06/2023 01:19

You do all know you can buy electric can openers for about £20 right?

Willyoujustbequiet · 27/06/2023 01:23

Yabu

As a leftie the ring pull is the answer to my prayers. Tin openers are the work of the devil.

BlockbusterVideoCard · 27/06/2023 03:18

Ah! Bingo for my most hated smug MN response - HTH. I didn't expect to get it so quickly.

In fairness OP, on this thread it's YOU who is quite smug. Come back to us if and when you develop difficulty using a tin opener (most people will, in time), or it breaks late at night when the only thing you have for supper is in a tin with no ring pull!

You do you (yep, mark your bingo card again if you want to) but don't waste a thread talking nonsense.

I'm also Gen X, so there!!

sashh · 27/06/2023 05:12

You can still use a tin opener on ring pull cans so you are BVU.

starfish4517 · 27/06/2023 05:45

So you're not dyspraxic, good for you.

Never managed a tin opener and upset at the cheaper cans in supermarkets having no rings.

Caradonna · 27/06/2023 05:50

Are the pull open lids pure metal?
I wonder if they have some sort of plastic content (as they roll back) so possibly don’t recycle as easily as the tin tins .
I prefer plastic free stuff.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/06/2023 05:53

Why would you buy a special device to lift up the ring pull when you can just use a dessert spoon or table knife?

I don't like ring pulls for tuna because it makes it harder to drain, and no, I'm not paying loads extra for no drain tuna.

But I agree that can openers can be hard to use, and decent ones hard to find in the shops. We have one from Ikea that's pretty decent.

For anyone who struggles with can openers, there was a good automatic one on series 2 of James May Oh Cook.

Yabvu can opener tins are awful!!!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 27/06/2023 06:27

What I want to know is - why don’t rice pudding or custard come in ring pull cans?
