to prefer cans that you open with a can opener rather than a ring pull?

Just opened a can of tuna and a can of sweetcorn and as usual the lids won't easily come entirely off, making them more tricky to fully empty and rinse out for recycling.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to own a can opener - or am I just a hopeless old Boomer who should get in the sea?

YABU it’s not that hard to use a ring pull.

You can still use a can opener if you want to but it’s ridiculous to expect everyone else to take a longer route to do something because you are weird and fussy.

@LindorDoubleChoc you ask if you are a " hopeless old boomer". If so I'm more than hopeless. I cannot use a can opener of any description. I just don't have to power to push and turn at the same time. (Suddenly wonders if an electronic one may be the answer). So I much prefer the ring pull ones.

Are you the woman from that 'how we used to live and eat throughout the decades BBC TV programme who was always shown never to be able to use a can opener?

Good question about rice pudding @FormerlySpeckledyHen

I read somewhere that owning a can opener was a sign of poverty because ring pull tins were more expensive so poorer people didn't buy them.

But obviously that doesn't follow for Ambrosia rice, custard etc. Or Branston beans.

Not all ring pulls are born equal- you should always have a tin opener to account for this.

I prefer a ring pull myself- or if not that, an electric tin opener for ease. I am dyspraxic and working a tin opener took me years to master. I still have to concentrate hard to do so and I've managed to unwind a tin opener- whilst not opening the tin at all - before.

you can still open tins with an opener even if they have a ring pull. or open from the bottom.

so yabu

though I have found that in recent years tins have got thinner and my opener(s) can't grip them well enough. hrmph.

Ah! Bingo for my most hated smug MN response - HTH. I didn't expect to get it so quickly.

In fairness OP, on this thread it's YOU who is quite smug. Come back to us if and when you develop difficulty using a tin opener (most people will, in time), or it breaks late at night when the only thing you have for supper is in a tin with no ring pull!

You do you (yep, mark your bingo card again if you want to) but don't waste a thread talking nonsense.

I'm also Gen X, so there!!

Thank you!

It's so frustrating when people with no/little understanding of disabilities belittle the tools and tricks that are necessities for day to day life for many people just because they "don't like it".

I've tried every disability designed can opener I've seen and never found one to work for me, I've gone through god knows how many electric openers which either don't grip well enough to reliably pierce or fail entirely in a few months. However, my manual ring pull aid has been with me for years and absolutely flawless.

So I have no time for people complaining about something like ring pulls with no good reason for it.

I'm not smug, I'm fed up of my needs being belittled.

NoCoincidence · 27/06/2023 08:21

For those that need it, this is the tool I use for ring pulls. It's been flawless for me for years - unlike can openers - and they do come in different shapes and styles for anyone that might struggle to grip this type.

If it's that much of a problem or annoyance just buy tins that don't have a ring pull. Generally I find ring pulls much safer because there is less chance of a jagged edge.

The ones I hate are the old corned beef "key" type cans. Almost impossible to open cleanly with a regular can opener and a very sharp jagged edge to give a serious cut.
