Being expected to wear blazers today

DDs school have said they still have to wear blazers to school today. It is very hot here. I have just told her to take it off if she wants to. No way am I indulging the school in this level of ridiculousness.

When I was young at our school the headmaster would in times of very hot weather just announce in Monday morning assembly that it was "summer uniform" this week, which meant no blazers. Common sense really. Looking smart is good, but not at the expense of good health. Your DDs school should do the same. Then if next week it had cooled down it would be announced back to normal uniform again.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/06/2023 13:19

It’s like an obsession with some schools isn’t it? I mean I understand why they have uniform. And that compliance in general is important. But this absolute Gestapo like obsession with enforcing it come what may is so odd. It happened at DDs’ school too.

AllOfThemWitches · 13/06/2023 13:21

Mine doesn't even need to have it in school at the moment.

sherbertyellowteddy · 13/06/2023 13:21

It's absolutely ridiculous. My daughter comes home telling me the teachers are in short sleeved open neck shirts, then telling the kids to put their blazers on. I've said the same, do not wear it and they can take it up with me.

Runnersandtoms · 13/06/2023 13:22

Ours have been told they don't have to. My daughter has so much in the pockets she's still wearing hers though.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 13/06/2023 13:22

It’s so weird why some schools are like this. The school near dds is and all the kids looked boiling already walking in this morning.

luckily dds school is more sensible. They’ve had no blazer required for severa weeks now and this week they can wear their PE kits in. So much nicer for them in shorts and a t shirt in this weather than full school kit. I bet they can concentrate better not sweltering.

Cincinnatus · 13/06/2023 13:24

I’ve also told my son to say the same. He isn’t allowed to wear shorts either. Seems most unfair.

Sirzy · 13/06/2023 13:25

Ds school went to PE kits as an option last week and have said it will be staying until the weather changes.

LuciferRising · 13/06/2023 13:25

I don't understand the obsession with dressing kids up in business attire when hardly anyone wears this anymore. Why can't be a change to more smart casual uniforms, or even casual?

noblegiraffe · 13/06/2023 13:29

Does the school have air con?

Kids at my school are a sweaty mess and not much learning is going on, and they’re in PE kit.

Any school insisting on blazers in hot classrooms is batshit and undermining their core function of education. Unjustifiable.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 13/06/2023 13:30

It's absolutely batshit. It's 28 degrees here - far too hot for a blazer.

Luckily our local schools are all very normal and everyone is in short-sleeved polo shirts.

Brianan · 13/06/2023 13:31

Taking it to school and wearing it are two different things. I would expect kids to take some sort of outerwear in case of rain, but hang it up or carry it if it’s hot.

GrassWillBeGreener · 13/06/2023 13:31

Boarding schools in this weather have "shirt sleeve order" - ie no blazers, no ties and sleeves may be rolled up. That's what I saw most following in chapel last Sunday.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 13/06/2023 13:32

My sons school said no ties or blazers needed this week thankfully, I'm a bit annoyed they don't allow shorts though.

AskMeMore · 13/06/2023 13:33

No air con. She took her blazer with her, but the school have said they should still wear them all day. Defies all common sense.

Summer uniform at my child's school so no blazers but do have to wear a tie.

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/06/2023 13:33

DC just wear theirs through the door then its in the bag.

Pooterlie · 13/06/2023 13:33

Ugh how awful. You should complain. That's madness.

BreehyHinnyBrinnyHoohyHah · 13/06/2023 13:34

I think our uniform requirements are just another indication of how backwards the UK has become. DH works in the tech sector. He has high level meetings all the time with gov officials and multi national companies. He hasn't worn a tie in years. Business has moved on, it's time schools did the same.

I'm not against uniform as a concept, but all that is needed is a coloured polo shirt and a jumper / cardigan plus smart trousers. Anything more is ridiculous.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/06/2023 13:34

That's daft! The secondary dc1 & 2 attend let us know on Sunday that there would be no ties or blazers this week.

They then sent a follow up email on Monday saying that going forward this will be the case for temps exceeding 25°c & that if it goes over 30° (like last summer) uniform won't be required at all, just shorts & t shirts for all.

Brefugee · 13/06/2023 13:35

just coming in with my regular "so many UK school's uniform policy is completely batshit"

(was talking with a couple of colleagues about school uniform and they expressed a wish that German schools had them. I told them about the blazer, sock and skirt batshittery and they have altered it to "t-shirt or hoodie with school logo")

Brefugee · 13/06/2023 13:37

also all the heads with the "prepare for the world of business" want to come to where i work. I wear a dress most days and was told "we're not formal here, you can come in PJs if you want"...

Zarataralara · 13/06/2023 13:37

I find British schools very odd with their determination to make identikit kids. Surely you’d just expect children to use their own judgement and wear what they’re comfortable with, jacket on if they’re cold or want to cover up, jacket off if they’re hot. It’s not rocket science.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/06/2023 13:37

My son's school is also blazer insistent. Horrible thick polyester and matching trousers. It's absolute madness in this weather. My son came home beetroot red yesterday.

AskMeMore · 13/06/2023 13:33

It's ridiculous. Extremely hot children isn't conductive to learning. There's no reason for them to wear it in this weather
