DDs school have said they still have to wear blazers to school today. It is very hot here. I have just told her to take it off if she wants to. No way am I indulging the school in this level of ridiculousness.

My school ( where I teach ) the children have ties and woollen blazers.
As soon as the weather got hot we allowed the children to take ties off and blazer but we expect them to arrive and leave school dressed correctly .
It's called Shirtsleeves Order !

So they have to wear their blazers to and from school?

The feigned ignorance is almost charming.

"Precise specifications" 😂

Let's put it another way, then. I don't drive due to disability. I know shit all about cars newer than a Ford Escort on a Y plate, other than what colour they are and that some are electric.

But I know what a pair of smart trousers, a formal shirt, tie, jacket and leather shoes look like. And he was wearing them because that's the rules for his employer.

You might be determined to believe otherwise, but the fact is that some people who aren't working in big 4 legal firms have strict formal dress codes. I've had them waitressing, in insurance companies, the NHS and in schools. And if people want to keep their zero hours or otherwise precarious employment, sometimes they just have to suck it up.

I'm fine with believing some people have formal dress codes in their jobs. Can you indicate where I've suggested otherwise?

I'm not fine with it being particularly credible that any car company that requires its drivers to dress formally are going to have cars in their fleet that aren't equipped with air conditioning.

Which makes it pretty irrelevant to the argument about whether kids should be required to wear blazers in unairconditioned schools in summer, and whether the latter is 'preparing them for the world of work'.

JassyRadlett · 15/06/2023 22:44

(And no uniformed job I've ever had has required me to wear the whole thing on my way to and from work.)

Sugarfree23 · 15/06/2023 23:13

The argument that uniform prepares kids for work falls down when you think how many kids will go to college / uni before heading to the workplace, where its jeans and t-shirts.

I'm honestly not against uniform, but the draconian rules of what kids must wear at any particular point in time or at some temperature make no sense. Some people feel hotter / colder than others.

Adarajames · 16/06/2023 01:47

We’ve told the kids they can take blazers, jumpers etc off in exam hall as it’s super stuffy in there, I’m amazed at how many still chose to sit there with full uniform including a jumper under the blazer on, when the rest of us are just trying not to expire from overheating!

Why do they have to wear woollen blazers in the middle of the afternoon when it’s in the high twenties? Do you wear one?

Bonkers that you need a "shirtsleeves order!" It's a school, not the Royal Navy ffs!
