AIBU to tell people off for setting dog on geese?

I was down our local park this morning which has a good sized lake in the middle, with ducks and geese. There was a family down there (mum, dad and 3 children under 7?) they had a Jack Russell dog and they were taking it lead off and pushing it towards the herds of geese and their babies. Laughing and filming it, when the dog came back, they'd treat it and send it off to do it again. I'm not a Karen, but if I see cruelty I can't help myself. I kind of got myself into a scary situation because the dad got very angry that I confronted him. AIBU or is that arsehole behaviour?

Leaving aside the awfully misogynistic use of the name Karen for second...

You do genuinely think you were unreasonable?

Bogggle · 11/06/2023 10:05

This isn’t going to go well now you’ve used the term Karen

blobby10 · 11/06/2023 10:05

No you are not being in reasonable - people being cruel to wild animals makes me angry too! When I was 20 I came across a brat of about 8 throwing stones at some ducklings so told
him to stop - his parents had a go at me and told me to mind my own business! There are some Truly horrible people in the world 😢😢

Pugdogmom · 11/06/2023 10:06

Well of course you weren't being unreasonable, apart from the Karen comment.

I'm surprised the dog didn't get attacked though. Geese can be vicious.

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:06

Presumably this area of the park was lead on only?

Morph22010 · 11/06/2023 10:06

Geese can be really vicious they wouldn’t be laughing when the goose injured their dog or child

JMSA · 11/06/2023 10:06

YANBU (aside from Karen!). There are no words to say what I think of these people. It's not the dog's fault, but I'd have laughed if the geese attacked the bastard humans Angry

DarkForces · 11/06/2023 10:07

If not setting your dog in birds is being a Karen then I'm in. 🤦🏽‍♀️ why do we think it's ok to use a woman's name as an insult?

dottiedodah · 11/06/2023 10:07

That is definitely Arsehole behaviour . Good on you ,I would probably not say anything but be annoyed with myself.Would have seconded you though! We have a dog, and I would never do this ,its cruel and thoughtless .At our local park we have a Duck pond which clearly states "No Dogs" loads of dogs in there. A lady said "Oh well he loves it" Yes but the ducks dont!

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:08

Oh and obviously you know you weren’t being unreasonable

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:08

Apologies for using Karen ( I wasn't aware it was offensive ) I'll rephrase, I'm not usually one to stick my nose in to others business

I would have rang the police tbh.

Would it make a difference if it wasn't? Confused

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:10

I don't think I was being unreasonable but I've come home a bit shaken from the confrontation and I was a bit like, god should I have done that?

I would have rang the police tbh.

And would would you expect the police to do, they are hardly likely to turn up blue lights flashing and then if they did eventually turn up the people would be one long and op doesn’t know who they are and it’s just her word against there’s anyway

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:11

Calling the police wasn't something I'd do, I'd feel a bit silly calling the police and saying some people are setting there dog on geese, there is a park ranger though, I told him.

People actively setting dogs on wildlife are cunts. No exceptions.

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:13

They should put up cctv though and prosecute people who do these things, unfortunately there's no consequences for it, so they don't care. Imagine though, Infront of your children aswell, the mind boggles

OP posts:
Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:13

So you went up to him and calmly said words to the effect “just to give you a heads up, it’s lead only around here because of the geese” and he kicked off and got aggressive?

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:14

What does you “telling them off” look like?

Parks are free. Where would the cost of the CCTV come from and all the expense of manning the screens, going through hours of footage and trying to get people to court?

so another rule they were breaking.

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:16

No I said, what are doing? That's awful, your setting your dog on the geese their terrified, unfortunately when I'm upset I'm not able to articulate myself as well as that 😄 but I didn't swear, the woman was okay actually, she was trying to tell me the dog was friendly?? I think the man was mad that I called him out infront of his wife and kids

Agreed

The vast majority would never ever behave like this. So to spend tens of thousands of pounds on cctv and monitoring is daft
