AIBU to tell people off for setting dog on geese?

I was down our local park this morning which has a good sized lake in the middle, with ducks and geese. There was a family down there (mum, dad and 3 children under 7?) they had a Jack Russell dog and they were taking it lead off and pushing it towards the herds of geese and their babies. Laughing and filming it, when the dog came back, they'd treat it and send it off to do it again. I'm not a Karen, but if I see cruelty I can't help myself. I kind of got myself into a scary situation because the dad got very angry that I confronted him. AIBU or is that arsehole behaviour?

Yeah I suppose it would come to nothing, but the lack of consequences is a problem, people do what they want because they know they will get away with it, it's scary.

No I said, what are doing? That's awful, your setting your dog on the geese their terrified, unfortunately when I'm upset I'm not able to articulate myself as well as that 😄 but I didn't swear, the woman was okay actually, she was trying to tell me the dog was friendly?? I think the man was mad that I called him out infront of his wife and kids

In future, best to keep short and unemotional

“heads up…. Lead on only around here to avoid dogs chasing the geese”

and how did he become “very angry”. As in shouting at you?

FrostyFifi · 11/06/2023 10:18

They're lucky the dog didn't properly go for it. As feisty as those little terriers are, geese are next-level, they'd probably have killed it.

Karen is an ageist misogynist slur.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/06/2023 10:19

Good luck to the dog when mum and dad goose decide to fight back.

Unfortunately, there are twats everywhere. Personally, I’d film them and send the footage to the council. We have a similar sounding park here. There are sign’s everywhere telling people to keep their dogs on short leads during nesting season and very hefty fines for those who don’t.

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:20

What did the park warden say or do?

I am impressed there was one on a Sunday morning

so the upshot of the altercation was… they stopped or they carried on?

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:21

he called me a crazy lady multiple times, he spoke in broken English, so I was mostly talking to the wife but he wasn't happy. I interrupted his Sunday morning outting to take the kids to watch the dog rip the geese apart

It’s awful behaviour and Terri me that they’re teaching their children that it’s okay. You were right to call them out on it. Well done.

Most people don’t do what they want because there are no consequences, it’s just a minority. Most people know how to behave like decent human beings which is why when you come across the few that don’t it’s shocking

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:23

They walked away from the area, down the near the road. The warden said he'd have a word, whether he did or not I don't know. I left after that.

Presumably this area of the park was lead on only?

It's completely irrelevant whether it's lead on only or not. They were deliberately setting their dog on the geese and rewarding it. I'm fairly sure attacking wildlife isn't permitted on lead or off.

Morph22010 · 11/06/2023 10:25

And in this particular situation there are natural consequences because at some point if he carries on doing this over time a goose will end up ripping apart his dog or kid or at least giving them a good scare. I’m always wary round geese as they are very vicious

SoupDragon · 11/06/2023 10:26

why would anyone think it's a good idea to train a dog that it will get a reward of it runs aggressively towards things? Giving it a reward for attacking the geese is bloody stupid.

It meant they were breaking another rule in addition. That’s why I asked FGS

So at least despite calling you a crazy woman, he listened to the crazy woman and they stopped!

Unfortunately certain other countries have an appalling track record when it comes to their attitude to animals.

Given his broke English, I suspect he many came from one such family

Rightiothen13 · 11/06/2023 10:30

Country not family

Helpmeout124 · 11/06/2023 10:31

Yeah I suppose alls well that ends well, There's not much that I will involve myself in, but cruelty of any kind riles me up the wrong way.

Well done.
Animal cruelty is always disgusting. This includes parents letting their children run after pigeons because they think it's 'cute'.

crazeekat · 11/06/2023 10:58

if that makes u a karen then i fking love u for sticking up for those poor babies being abused. next time phone the police tho, and film them privately, then post it on sm
and shame.

crazeekat · 11/06/2023 11:00

actually animal cruelty is a police concern, have phoned them myself when i see dogs being abused in the street
from its so called arsehole owner. and they come out.

Apologies for using Karen ( I wasn't aware it was offensive ) I'll rephrase, I'm not usually one to stick my nose in to others business
