to be sick of selfish train bastards

On a packed train to a city where there is a huge music event happening. Roads closed etc. The next train is cancelled. This train is so busy they literally can't fit anyone else on and there were 3 people left stranded on the platform at the station I have just pulled out on.

Except there are actually 3 available seats. One in the middle with a bag on and 2 by the window. When I suggested the lads stood in the aisle took some seats to allow the people by the doors to move up more and let the people on I was told no. They want to chat with their mates.

So now 3 people are stranded where there isn't another train for 2 hours all because grown men can't be separated from their mates for half an hour.

I despair of people sometimes

People are just selfish :(

Thebigblueballoon · 10/06/2023 14:52

Are there loads of massive music events going on today in the UK, or are a lot of people from the same city posting?!

Anyway, yep, trains/buses/planes seem to bring the absolute worst out of people. Bags on seats, sitting in reserved seats, don’t give a fuck when you politely ask them to sort out whatever issue. You either confront them and risk being stuck with an aggressive wanker for x amount of time or keep your head down and hope for the best.

Sam Fender is playing in Newcastle today, and not far away in Sunderland, Pink is on at the same time time.

The one near me is Arctic Monkeys

Download is on this weekend as well which I think has been causing issues on the M4.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 10/06/2023 15:08

Was on a train before where a woman argued and argued with a ticket inspector about she shouldn't have to move her bag and if someone on the crowded train wanted to sit down they should ask her. She wasnt going to just move it.

In the end he went away and seconds later came a announcement telling people their bag doesn't need a seat! Shouldn't have to do that...

IWFH · 10/06/2023 15:11

As a regular rush hour commuter in the past I'd always ask people to move the bag please. If they said 'no' (very rare tbh) I used to pick up the bag, drop it on the floor and sit down anyway.

Parklife festival is this weekend in Manchester.

Ilikewinter · 10/06/2023 15:14

You should try being in Manchester this weekend. Today is day 1 of Parklife festival, and The Weekend are playing. Tomorrow is day 2 of Parklife and SoccorAid. Luckily the tram drivers have cancelled their strike .... im just happy to give the whole place a wide birth and retreat to the comfort of my garden !

Therealjudgejudy · 10/06/2023 15:18

Trains really do seem to bring out bizarre selfishness in some people.

But they are probably always dickheads!

Sirius3030 · 10/06/2023 15:18

Couldn’t people just move past them? Was it really just those lads in the aisle, out of the entire train, that caused those people to be stranded?

LiftyLift · 10/06/2023 15:20

I always just ask people to move their bags. Sometimes they seem shocked even when the train is packed. People are strange.

Angelik · 10/06/2023 15:34

I think the solution was the gift of any 3 people to just move themselves past these men and sit down. I can't believe no one did that!

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 10/06/2023 15:37

Yanbu. People on the rush hour buses do the same. And you can't get past them to the seats because there isn't space!

TomatoSandwiches · 10/06/2023 15:38

I just drop bags from seats and barge through people whilst exclaiming " excuse me " although RBF does the job 99% of the time.
People are actual bustards on public transport.

Preps · 10/06/2023 15:41

If the train was that crowded there must have been many more than three possible candidates to take the seats?

I'd assume that "young lads" were uncomfortable sitting while others were standing and were trying to leave the seats vacant for those who needed them more. Or there "we want to be together" was really "that's OK, someone else have them".

Brackenfield · 10/06/2023 15:57

A bag on a seat is hardly an insurmountable problem? Why not ask for it to be moved?

Yes people are being rude by causing these issues but I don't understand the current timidity with people not insisting on people moving etc

They couldn't see that far into the train as it was so so packed

I'd have moved the bags and sat down

deathbyhayfever · 10/06/2023 19:03

1 You need to loudly point out that there are 3 empty seats.

2 You need brute force and push your way through until you reach them.

M1. Been horrendous since Wednesday. Hope no one is flying from EMA !

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/06/2023 19:08

Try that shit in London and unilateral action will be taken.

I swear London commuters are like cats, they can contort themselves in to the unlikliest of spaces and heaven help anyone who stops them.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2023 19:11

I was on a bus recently where they needed to constantly play the Move Down the Bus announcement. There was plenty of space away from the doors.

Bromptotoo · 25/06/2023 10:46

How big were the bags?

Used to have this when I commuted to London; briefcases, handbags or coats. I'd just say in a moderately assertive tone that I'd like to sit there while moving to actually sit down.

BAckpacks etc should be left on the racks or in the door vestibules.

People on airport trains with bags the size of an upright freezer are another thing.

Sunshineandrainbow · 25/06/2023 10:51

Hate this and even more so the people that sit on aisle seat and leave window one empty
