to be sick of selfish train bastards

On a packed train to a city where there is a huge music event happening. Roads closed etc. The next train is cancelled. This train is so busy they literally can't fit anyone else on and there were 3 people left stranded on the platform at the station I have just pulled out on.

Except there are actually 3 available seats. One in the middle with a bag on and 2 by the window. When I suggested the lads stood in the aisle took some seats to allow the people by the doors to move up more and let the people on I was told no. They want to chat with their mates.

So now 3 people are stranded where there isn't another train for 2 hours all because grown men can't be separated from their mates for half an hour.

I despair of people sometimes

I just drop bags from seats and barge through people whilst exclaiming " excuse me " although RBF does the job 99% of the time.
People are actual bustards on public transport.

People are actual bustards on public transport.

Would probably improve matters.

(Apols, I know it was a typo.)

Buses are different in that some people cannot manage stairs on a moving bus or at all. No excuse re trains though.

Hate this and even more so the people that sit on aisle seat and leave window one empty

Im claustrophobic and hate being hemmed in by somebody. I will happily move to allow somebody to take the window seat.

rwalker · 25/06/2023 11:06

Whilst I can see the problem on a packed train you’ve singled out 3 people and blamed them
I’m sure there was other people who could of moved not just these 3

They couldn't see that far into the train as it was so so packed

But why did none of the standing people right by the empty seats move into the empty seats?

Lovetotravel123 · 25/06/2023 11:30

I’m always shocked at the people who put their filthy shoes on the seats. What kind of upbringing teaches them that this is ok?

I once observed an older/middle-aged couple muttering and complaining to each other about a crying baby with their feet up on the seats. I asked them to take their feet down and they looked at me so scornfully!

It wasn't 3 people. It was a large group of lads taking up the whole aisle. Any one of them could have taken 1 of the 3 available seats thus freeing up room for 3 more standees

Quite and this is the whole point of the thread

People are incredibly selfish. Although couldn’t someone else have moved to the seats?

Catspyjamas17 · 26/06/2023 15:14

I've had the opposite more often in London. People bellowing "MOVE DOWN" when there is no more space whatsoever or you are already in the middle of the carriage and you move further, some twat will be telling you to move down from the other end.

At the other end of the scale I put my bag next to me on quiet trains to prevent weirdos from sitting next to me when there are rows of empty seats.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/06/2023 15:30

You just need to be a London dickhead with zero shame. A few years ago we needed to get from a small French town to the nearest city to get our train home. It was very crowded and the entrace to carriages were packed with loads of people milling pointlessly in the stairwell of a double decker train seemingly slowly rearranging their worldly goods. I just grabbed our bags, held them over my head and marched through the crowds to the seats upstairs, saying "excusez moi" loudly as we went.

No way was i missing that train.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 26/06/2023 15:37

It would also help if eg trains from Leeds to Manchester Airport had more than four carriages and if they also had racks for people going to the airport to put their suitcases in.

People travelling to airports by train will quite often have suitcases with them but some rail companies fail to understand this.

No. The aisle was dominated by the group of lads who could not bear to be separated

Agreed. This train had 2 carriages. 2! The next day there were 4 and the train was mainly empty

NotTerfNorCis · 26/06/2023 17:40

Yeah now I take the train regularly I see this every day. People standing while multiple people have bags on seats or have taken the aisle seat blocking the one next to them. It's mainly young people. Selfish cnuts.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 26/06/2023 18:31

Sounds awful OP. Two carriages and having the next train cancelled is bad enough but the people behaving selfishly towards other passengers would do my head in.

EasterBreak · 26/06/2023 19:08

I'd have crammed myself on.

elderflowerandpomelo · 26/06/2023 19:17

I ended up standing on someone’s suitcase - busy train and she had made 4 seats unusable by putting her suitcase flat on the floor, and her laptop beside her. So I climbed onto her suitcase to get to the empty seat, and DS sat beside me, w our feet on her bag. She did move it after that (tho still made it impossible for a 4th person to sit..)

Purplebunnie · 26/06/2023 19:20

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 10/06/2023 15:08

Was on a train before where a woman argued and argued with a ticket inspector about she shouldn't have to move her bag and if someone on the crowded train wanted to sit down they should ask her. She wasnt going to just move it.

In the end he went away and seconds later came a announcement telling people their bag doesn't need a seat! Shouldn't have to do that...

I would have lost my job and chucked her off the train but then I'm petty like that

I just threaten to charge her bag a ticket.
