Brain scan - what is this??

Hi,

is anyone here familiar with brain anatomy and could possibly help? I know a little but not much It’s regarding a brain MRI- there was a black circular patch behind my cerebellum and I can’t find anything similar on google images. im not worried about it, just curious for my own knowledge as to what it may be. I can post photos of it below if it helps too.

just to clarify- my consultant is reviewing it too and I’ll get results in the coming weeks, but I was sent a copy of the scan for my own interest in the meantime. I’m not trying to self diagnose I’m just fascinated by it all and wondered if anyone knew what it could be.

thanks all!

OP I love that you are showing off your brain to us! It must be so cool to see what's inside your own head.

Then put "I have no expertise, but in my case this related to lesions".

Brilliant! Thanks for clearing that up. Yes that’s the blob part that I meant!

apologies, could I ask one last thing? One of the other pictures (or slices is probably the better word) didn’t look even around the edge of the brain and the layers between the brain and the skull, ie the layer wasn’t the same size if you see what I mean. (It’s in the first 2 pictures I’ve posted below). Do you happen to know what that layer is and what it could mean? And also, the bit in between my nostrils wasn’t straight and sort of looked different on both sides, presumably that’s a bit of mucus showing up in the scan too? (Last few photos) Apologies for all the questions it’s just so fascinating! I still can’t believe I’m looking at my own brain.

You say you’re ‘just fascinated’ but you’re asking more and more questions which look to be related to some sort of anxiety. I would really want u til you have your appointment.

Lol. Take it from me- you made the correct choice !

apologies but would it be ok to ask one more question ? I meant to ask earlier on when I was trying to work out if the blob was the pituitary gland lol, but does it look a normal size or a bit bigger? Again, I fully understand if you can’t comment specifically, I was just curious and extremely impatient waiting for results as you can probably tell ! I totally understand if you are not able to say specifically though x

Honestly. Step away from the laptop, and from the scans, and from Google.

Wonderful news!! Have a fantastic weekend 😀 😊

Ignore all the posters who thought this thread is bonkers. Xx I'm getting tests at hospital this week and I totally empathise with you Xx

Well no, I don't have to, as that was what I was told, by a doctor. But I'm so glad you know my life better than me, thank you

FarmGirl78 · 10/06/2023 09:59

You ARE trying to self diagnose.

You aren't asking for help or support while you await your diagnosis, you aren't asking for suggestions as to what questions to ask at an appointment. You're trying to get a diagnosis. I really don't think threads like this should be allowed on Mumsnet.

Apologies, I didn’t explain it very well! I’ve tried to red circle it below, hope that makes sense. Just wondered what the white layer was as I’m guessing the outside layer is the skull?

thats really cool about the nasal septum. I can follow what you’re saying that the stuff beside it is the fleshy nose stuff and that makes sense now I can see it. Really fascinating!

just wondered, from the photos, if you’ve seen anything they are likely to mention? I totally understand if you’d rather not comment on that specifically and I understand that it’s a lot of pictures they use not just one, just curious as to if there was anything at all going on in those photos.

This is really normal!!

I also share your fascination OP!! :)

I had an MRI done as part of some research once and got a nice momento!! I also think it's incredible to see your own brain!

Mine definitely looked all uneven - especially my frontal lobes!! But it's normal apparantly! I'll try and post my scan!!

DogOutInTheDark · 10/06/2023 10:16

This is my brain!! :)

Find it incredible looking at a brain scan!! That's me!! Right there!! My whole personality, memories, experiences, emotions, life hsitory! All there, in that small wired looking bundle in my head!! Incredible!

Brain scan - what is this??
brainwaves83 · 14/06/2023 19:28

Just an update in case anyone else is still about. I didn’t realise with my package there would be 2 different opinions from separate radiographers of the scan. The initial opinion was that it was healthy and no problems etc (the one I posted about on here) however after the weekend I got the other radiographers report who said the brain itself was normal but that the cerebellum is too close to the brainstem and was sitting too low under the ‘foreman magnum’ (which is what I was worried about initially!)

got to wait 2 weeks now for an appointment with a consultant to discuss the results in relation to my symptoms and other signs. I wish the package had just included the initial results and not the 2nd opinion!! Although I do understand that whatever it is (if anything) it’s nothing major because the fact someone thought it was normal shows it’s clearly not a big thing. Just got to be patient now

Wow- that’s amazing!!! I’m completely fascinated by it all, it’s incredible to think that that’s a map of your brain!!!

just to clarify- the actual results were in medical jargon (the cerebellum tonsils (?) were too low below the magnum) but that’s just a summary of what it said

This bit? It’s the confluence of sinuses.

Lesions aren’t black. Black is no signal - so often air, which has no signal, cartilage- when the signal drops too quickly to be captured or turbulent blood - where the signal has moved before it is captured.

so if my scan shows lots of black patches then am officially an air head? 😂🤣😂🤣

Op i get you are curious but just wait for official results

So outing aren't they? 🤣🤣🤣

I was curious at the start and I thought it was really fascinating seeing my brain but after getting back both reports I’m slightly more worried so I’m definitely going to wait to speak to the consultant (and not google anything because I don’t understand any of it and all I’ll do is freak myself out !!!)
