Brain scan - what is this??

Hi,

is anyone here familiar with brain anatomy and could possibly help? I know a little but not much It’s regarding a brain MRI- there was a black circular patch behind my cerebellum and I can’t find anything similar on google images. im not worried about it, just curious for my own knowledge as to what it may be. I can post photos of it below if it helps too.

just to clarify- my consultant is reviewing it too and I’ll get results in the coming weeks, but I was sent a copy of the scan for my own interest in the meantime. I’m not trying to self diagnose I’m just fascinated by it all and wondered if anyone knew what it could be.

thanks all!

Brilliant! Thanks for clearing that up. Yes that’s the blob part that I meant!

apologies, could I ask one last thing? One of the other pictures (or slices is probably the better word) didn’t look even around the edge of the brain and the layers between the brain and the skull, ie the layer wasn’t the same size if you see what I mean. (It’s in the first 2 pictures I’ve posted below). Do you happen to know what that layer is and what it could mean? And also, the bit in between my nostrils wasn’t straight and sort of looked different on both sides, presumably that’s a bit of mucus showing up in the scan too? (Last few photos) Apologies for all the questions it’s just so fascinating! I still can’t believe I’m looking at my own brain.

Really interesting. Think you’ve lost a bit of your brain or your full of hot air 😂

having a part of my brain missing- suddenly a lot of things are making sense now 😂🤪

Are you not worried someone will recognise you from your pictures 😆

Apologies, I didn’t explain it very well! I’ve tried to red circle it below, hope that makes sense. Just wondered what the white layer was as I’m guessing the outside layer is the skull?

thats really cool about the nasal septum. I can follow what you’re saying that the stuff beside it is the fleshy nose stuff and that makes sense now I can see it. Really fascinating!

just wondered, from the photos, if you’ve seen anything they are likely to mention? I totally understand if you’d rather not comment on that specifically and I understand that it’s a lot of pictures they use not just one, just curious as to if there was anything at all going on in those photos.

Lol. If my consultant is on here and recognises my scan- hi! 😉🤪

Black is fluid. So if you did a MRI from your eyes to the back of your head, you would see two black parts in each side of your brain. Your ventricles. Full of fluid

Oh lovely! I didn’t even know there was fat in the scalp. Starting to wish I had studied anatomy back in the day instead of business lol.

I completely understand and apologies for putting you on the spot like that 💐 Thank you for explaining it to me!

Yes- I can see that in one of the photos! How awesome!

Its the flow void from your basilar and straight sinus. If what im looking at is the bit you mean. Normal anatomy. Honestly some of the answers!

Themermaidspool · 09/06/2023 21:14

Absolutely pissing myself at the number of radiologists on here who have tried to answer the questions and every single of them has thought you were talking about a different bit than you actually meant! All reassuringly excellent answers mind you!!

Lol. Take it from me- you made the correct choice !

apologies but would it be ok to ask one more question ? I meant to ask earlier on when I was trying to work out if the blob was the pituitary gland lol, but does it look a normal size or a bit bigger? Again, I fully understand if you can’t comment specifically, I was just curious and extremely impatient waiting for results as you can probably tell ! I totally understand if you are not able to say specifically though x

I’m no medic but I think brain lesions associated with MS are white and you don’t seem to have any of those! We can have odd things in our body, I think it’s fairly normal. Obviously you must hear from the experts. But I’ve been for several brain and other scans, each time they’ve found ‘something’ like a cyst or ‘thing’! And were very nonchalant about it. Lots of incidental findings like this.

It's funny how you're using your brain to look at your brain - it's like recursion.

@brainwaves83
If you're wondering about brain tumours, I'll share my MRI. Look a bit different to your scans!

brainwaves83 · 09/06/2023 23:46

surprisingly, the scan results from the radiographer have just been uploaded to the online portal right now! much earlier than I would have expected. And good news- all normal! they said it was all unremarkable so presumably that includes the pituitary gland size. extremely relieved! much obliged for explaining it all to me (and to everyone on the thread too!)

Usually means a brain lesion

No, don't be ridiculous.

VerticalSausages · 09/06/2023 23:53

This thread is bonkers. OP are you going to reveal why you had the scan?

brainwaves83 · 09/06/2023 23:54

nothing bonkers about it. No, as I dont have to and its not relevant.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/06/2023 00:08

I had a private MRI and got the images, never had them on the NHS. Donated them somewhere I think.

Well in my experience it did, so 🤔
