Deodorant and shower gels not as good these days?

AIBU to think that the quality of deodorants and shower gels has degraded significantly?

I've noticed the same Palmolive shower gel I've used for the last 15 years has stopped lasting all day. Same with the deodorant I've religiously used for years!

I'm finding I smell halfway through the day! Anyone else finding this with their products?

I got given a very lovely Elemis set and I still smell fresh all day

I use soap now
Check your antiperspirant is still an antiperspirant as some have turned into a deodorant instead so doesn't stop you sweating.

moosecatattack · 07/06/2023 20:17

@dementedpixie interesting! I did not know that. I'll double check ...

I would hate to smell like a shower gel all day!

How your body reacts to certain hormones can impact how much you sweat or smell, so it’s likely it’s your body that has changed rather than deodorants not working.

Im not loyal to any deodorant and buy whatever is on offer or looks interesting at the time but I’ve never tried one that meant I smelled of sweat part way though the day.

moosecatattack · 07/06/2023 20:19

@Sissynova I suppose I mean keeps me fresh and not necessarily smelling like shower gel all day.

I've started to smell in all the areas I don't want to and I've never had that problem before! However just turned 40 and wonder if it's hormonal

Hasn't alcohol been removed from deodorant's ingredients thereby rendering them less effective? I think I got that info from here some time ago, but I could be wrong 😳

johnnydeppsslipper · 07/06/2023 20:32

@moosecatattack

I'm early forties and also smell
Differently in the heat compared to how I used to and it's def hormone related

Last summer in the heatwave I really started trying different things.

I now use a sainsburys triple dry roll on. You put it on after your evening shower and it dries on then I apply again the next morning and it works all day now.
I work in temps upto 29 some days so it's definitely helped.

In regards to feeling er hum fresh downstairs I now use soap first

Currently using pears soap and then a rose based shower gel after and again that makes a difference.

The soap gets rid of the sweaty smell whereby shower gel kind of just brushes over things Grin

I've also just bought some new all cotton organic underwear because synthetic material really makes it worse

If you use Sanex deodorant, read the ingredients to make sure it has aluminium chloride in it. They've quietly removed it from about half their products, so they no longer work.

That explains it! I thought I’d found the holy grail of deodorants, but using a different Sanex was awful. I’ll look out for the aluminium chloride, thank you 🙏.

I like the sure max cream that you put on at night, usually buy off Amazon in bulk as it's cheaper

People will now say I'm ruining my skin but what works for me is double washing. I use exfoliating gloves and bar soap (not dove) and wash anywhere sweaty first so under arms, feet, under boobs, belly button etc
Then I use shower gel or oil on a shower puff all over
Honestly my skin likes it and I smell amazing all day

It could very well be hormonal.

In my late 30s, I started to smell never having had any kind of BO issue previously. It was my very first perimenopause symptoms. Even now I'm post-menopause, if I forget to take my HRT, I start to smell.

Oblomov23 · 07/06/2023 21:12

Interestingly I've noticed this.

Sloelydoesit · 07/06/2023 21:15

Me too! I need to check ingredients. Thought it was me being grungy!

Cas112 · 07/06/2023 21:16

OMG! I thought I was just getting really smelly but this makes sense 😂🙃

moosecatattack · 07/06/2023 21:48

So relieved I'm not the only one who thinks this! It's either hormones or to cut costs or other reasons the ingredients have changed to not work as well.

Thanks to the poster above who suggested double washing with soap and then using a shower gel on puff, I'll try this!

Any deodorant recommendations? Always used Dove or Sure but both now don't seem to last. I use a roll one and spray

I like mum roll on. Blue or pink, both are nice.

I think it's a combination of both to be honest, hormones definitely have an impact though. I also double wash sometimes, dettol antibac soap in the summer then a shower gel. Normal soap is fine in winter

redspottedmug · 07/06/2023 21:56

It's probably hormonal.
Treat yourself to a proper bar of soap (not Dove - it's not soap) and a flannel or puff, and have a good old scrub in the shower.

Follow up with Mitchum antiperspirant.

Thank me later 😉

Notreallyhappy · 07/06/2023 22:00

I found that usual washing deodorant stopped for me. I now use an antibacterial soap, plus a natural deodorant.... WILD. .. no smells or sweaty pits..

Lemonademoney · 07/06/2023 22:03

I think it’s hormones too. I’ve switched to ‘wild’ deodorant as a natural alternative and I really recommend. Fresh as a daisy x

Try wild deodorant.

Fairislefandango · 07/06/2023 22:14

Soap is much better than shower gel imo. Lots of people think it makes your skin dry, but I disagree.

volcanoroll · 07/06/2023 22:15

Just get a bar o soap

mauveiscurious · 07/06/2023 22:19

Gel is a bar of soap watered down just use soap

EwwSprouts · 07/06/2023 22:19

I swapped from Sure to Garnier invisible mineral deodorant. Heaps better. Used to be in Tesco but now tend to buy online.

KimberleyClark · 07/06/2023 22:19

I use Fussy deodorant. It works and it’s refillable so you’re not throwing empty deodorant containers or cans out any more.
