Deodorant and shower gels not as good these days?

AIBU to think that the quality of deodorants and shower gels has degraded significantly?

I've noticed the same Palmolive shower gel I've used for the last 15 years has stopped lasting all day. Same with the deodorant I've religiously used for years!

I'm finding I smell halfway through the day! Anyone else finding this with their products?

I got given a very lovely Elemis set and I still smell fresh all day

I use Mum roll on antiperspirant deodorant, can't say I've noticed any change in effectiveness

reluctantbrit · 07/06/2023 22:25

I hate soap, makes my skin itchy and dry and it doesn't matter what I use. I can't use it for handwashing either.
I use shower gel in winter and Lush shower jelly in Summer.

The Mitchum roll on (no perfume) works really well I find. Best deodorant I've ever tried.
I also use soap in the shower - I feel and smell much cleaner!

LifeIsPainHighness · 08/06/2023 00:00

I was thinking this today about the Deodrant - I seem to smell by lunchtime and now carry a stick in my bag

Nevermind31 · 08/06/2023 00:29

i like Wild too…
why isn’t dove soap?

honeygirlz · 08/06/2023 00:34

I also thought hormonal changes.

I never used to wear deodorant but a a few years I became heavier and I found that I was getting sweaty at night and during the day. Now I’ve lost 20 pounds, the sweats have stopped completely, both at night and during the day, and I’m back to no deodorant.

I've noticed this recently!! I wasn't sure if it was perhaps peri-menopause or just the hot weather. I tried Sanex spray deodorant and by lunchtime I smelled terrible. I used to swear by Soft & Gentle purple deodorant, but I haven't seen it in shops for ages 😔 Mitchum roll on is ok but I much prefer an aerosol. Anyone found the purple S&G lately??

If you use Sanex deodorant, read the ingredients to make sure it has aluminium chloride in it. They've quietly removed it from about half their products, so they no longer work.

I wondered why it had stopped working so well! Going to check mine now...

Interesting! Why did they stop using it? Too expensive?

CarpetSlipper · 08/06/2023 07:42

I haven’t noticed a difference, they all work fine for me.

There are some reports appearing to link aluminium salts with breast cancer. But also many studies indicating there is no link.

They're jumping on the eco bandwagon
My tesco is full of deodorants rather than antiperspirant. I want the strong stuff, thank you very much!

moosecatattack · 08/06/2023 09:25

Any recommendations on soap please?

I just use whatever smells nice in TK maxx. Any bar soap is fine, pears is good, I like the scent of Lux as well

MoonlightMemories · 08/06/2023 13:18

It's interesting that you point this out, I tend to get really oily hair so for years have used tresemme's deep cleansing shampoo which I then followed up with a conditioner to get the right level of moisture in it, except that now they have actually removed the main ingredient that helped to get rid of the oil (grapefruit extract), so now the new formula shampoo leaves my hair feeling really greasy and itchy, yet there is no mention on the packaging about this change.

I have to try and find an alternative now with similar ingredients if possible, when it worked perfectly fine before. Why do companies have to do this!?

bingbangbongding · 08/06/2023 13:22

I've went back to bar soap for the same reason.

I wonder if they've diluted shower gels (their version of shrinkflation)

honeygirlz · 08/06/2023 13:55

Tresemme seems to be a terrible shampoo. Decimated my sister's hair.

Fairislefandango · 08/06/2023 14:41

Any recommendations on soap please?

My favourite brand is Nesti Dante, which is a bit expensive for soap, but it's lovely. At the cheaper end I like Palmolive (the green one). I also often buy a bunch of the big bars in fancy packaging in TKMaxx. I have a gorgeous sandalwood one on the go at the moment.

Papernotplastic · 08/06/2023 14:52

It could be hormonal or you could be right and it’s about manufacturers skimping to save money. I use bar soap and very strong deodorant so I haven’t noticed the issue you’re having but have noticed that Persil washing liquid doesn’t seem to be removing stains as well as it used to. I used to be able to use under the recommended amount of it to get everything clean. Now I have to spot treat the stains before washing and fill the ball to way over the measuring line.

I've managed to find some grapefruit oil bar shampoo on Etsy that doesn't have even half the ingredients that the now rubbish one has, so really hoping that will do the trick! Never had an issue with it until recently. That's got to be better for my hair in any case.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 08/06/2023 16:23

Interesting that they have removed aluminium chloride and alcohol, my sure roll on deodorant doesn’t seem to dry anymore, I can apply it and my armpits are still wet an hour later, I am off to check the ingredients. I wonder if they have taken these ingredients out of the mens versions.

dementedpixie · 07/06/2023 20:13

I use soap now
Check your antiperspirant is still an antiperspirant as some have turned into a deodorant instead so doesn't stop you sweating.

So on the back of this I checked my sanex roll ons, one is antiperspirant and the other deodorant ! So annoying, I didn't realise this

BeaLola · 08/06/2023 16:42

I used to use the M&S rose roll on deodorant but now am using the Aldi ones which are very nice

Spanielsarepainless · 08/06/2023 18:11

Tried Lidl antipersirant and my armpits came out in a bright red rash. Took ages to dry.

AutisticLegoLover · 08/06/2023 20:25

Mitchum gel for the win thanks to a recommendation on MN a year or so ago. It actually dries on your skin. And Nesti Dante soap. It's expensive but lasts months. Synthetic fibres make my pits stink even in winter.
