Partner hosted plumber while I was at work. We still do not have a flushing loo. AIBU to be peeved?

He tugged the chain hard, something broke, it stopped flushing.

After a spell of having to tip bathwater into loo to flush, he booked a plumber who visits.

I get home to find plumber did half an hour, removed broken thing, told him to buy new bit, clean inside bit with white vinegar and fit new bit to it. Then charged £35 and left.

We are currently standing in builders warehouse shop while he stares at internet and wonders round aisles.

Context - I work full time and run a side business. He doesn't.

AIBU to expect that between them they could have got the fecking loo flushing without all this 😡

YABU to say 'host' in this context. Also getting a plumber to do anything for £35 is a bargain and unheard of where I live.

Without all what? It sounds like something was broken and needed replaced, so someone had to go to the shop to get it. Considering you’re already moaning about having to pay £35 for half an hour for the plumber I imagine you wouldn’t have wanted to pay for him to go to the shop and back to buy it.
Sounds like he was giving you the most straight forward way to deal with it.

Sirzy · 03/06/2023 15:14

It sounds like the plumber was actually pretty honest and instead of charging for something told him how to easily do it himself.

not sure why a trip to buy the part needs two of you! Leave him to sort it

Isittimeformynapyet · 03/06/2023 15:15

I thought you were going to say DH and plumber were three beers in when you got home!

Yeah, that's crap, but what you gonna do? Hope this vent helps x

Divorcedalongtime · 03/06/2023 15:16

That’s cheap though, no wonder nothing was fixed

LivingTheDreamNow · 03/06/2023 15:17

You got a bargain, a lot of plumbers would have charged a lot more!
He did you a favour, at least he didn’t rip you off.

Uncreativename · 03/06/2023 15:18

Host?

found a plumber who visits? What, as opposed to you taking the broken toilet to them?

anyway it sounds like plumber didn’t have the correct replacement part, so your options would be to a) go buy it and fit it or b) wait for plumber to go buy it, come back, fit it, and charge you another call out fee.

in most places £35 for plumber to step
across the threshold is ridiculously cheap.

sounds like you’ve got an effective fix for a bargain price.

Ericabro · 03/06/2023 15:21

Might be a lot cheaper to buy a new cistern than the bits you need op

Successstory82 · 03/06/2023 15:21

Odd use of host

and the plumber didn’t have the required part

very normal

why it requires both of you to go and get it… is the odd bit

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 03/06/2023 15:21

You probably need a new bottom entry float valve - less than a tenner, and some adjustable spanners if you havent got any, and a screwdriver of you dont have that.

They are actually really easy to change yourself. YouTube it.

Successstory82 · 03/06/2023 15:22

Come again… £35 on a Saturday!!!!

bargain!!!

MaryJean87 · 03/06/2023 15:27

No I agree he should have fixed it. You didn't call him out for advice, you wanted him to repair it. Sounds like he couldn't be arsed going to buy the part, which he should have had ready if he knew what the problem was.

TooTrusting · 03/06/2023 15:28

I hear you OP. My loo flush broke. Plumber told me to go and buy new part. Easier said than done. Couldn't find one to fit.
Got another plumber (neighbour's son) who got the part for me and fitted it.
All of that would have cost me a lot of money on proper rates though. So the first guy thought he was being helpful.

SwedishDeathClearance · 03/06/2023 15:29

I though this was going to be about a sex film
DH seduces sexy plumber over a steamy tub

LIZS · 03/06/2023 15:29

How much did he quote to fix it? Was he trying to save money?

endofthelinefinally · 03/06/2023 15:30

Honestly, that level of ineptitude would infuriate me. The plumber was doing him a big favour saving him the labour costs of fetching and fitting the part. Did he not think to write down the instructions?

WhiteFire · 03/06/2023 15:31

It all seems a bit hammer and nut really. Surely the plumber would have said which part he needed.

endofthelinefinally · 03/06/2023 15:32

As pp have said, the alternative is another call out charge, the replacement part and the labour charge. If you are cash rich and time poor just do that.

pilates · 03/06/2023 15:32

Wow that’s cheap

I took it that the plumber did explain what to buy but OP's DP has forgotten. If that isn't the case then the plumber is at fault.

Münchner · 03/06/2023 15:34

Why would you call a plumber for this? Just replace the cistern

WhiteFire · 03/06/2023 15:37

Since when has replacing the cistern been easier?

Successstory82 · 03/06/2023 15:37

Op won’t be back

we haven’t given her what she wanted!

theGooHasGone · 03/06/2023 15:40

Of course if OP had been the one talking to the plumber he would have fixed the toilet there and then, apologised profusely the entire time and then told her the replacement was free of charge for all her trouble.

Topseyt123 · 03/06/2023 15:43

Hosting the plumber implies that DH had invited him over for a dinner party and drinks. 🤣
