He tugged the chain hard, something broke, it stopped flushing.

After a spell of having to tip bathwater into loo to flush, he booked a plumber who visits.

I get home to find plumber did half an hour, removed broken thing, told him to buy new bit, clean inside bit with white vinegar and fit new bit to it. Then charged £35 and left.

We are currently standing in builders warehouse shop while he stares at internet and wonders round aisles.

Context - I work full time and run a side business. He doesn't.

AIBU to expect that between them they could have got the fecking loo flushing without all this 😡

No I agree he should have fixed it. You didn't call him out for advice, you wanted him to repair it. Sounds like he couldn't be arsed going to buy the part, which he should have had ready if he knew what the problem was.

Oh come on, how can he know what the problem is without coming out to look?
This is a totally normal scenario!
Most trades don’t waste their cash flow buying parts just to drive to drive them around all day on the off chance.

He clearly told the OPs husband what the part was and that it was an easy fix and the husband agreed with him.

He sounds like an honest plumber giving you good advice and not overcharging.. you sound like a bloody headache.. what do you want people to do, feel sorry for you because you are so busy with work and say your husband must be so lazy? Get a grip love..

He didn’t have the part

so you think he should have gone and got it?

the fee would have been a damn sight more than the cost of the part!

endofthelinefinally · 03/06/2023 15:48

Just for comparison, where I live, a plumber call out charge is £90. Likely to go up when Sadiq Khan expands the ULEZ.

JFDIYOLO · 03/06/2023 15:48

Well, we're back from the shop. Did not find the part.

The plumber visit was on Wednesday.
I'd have told plumber I'd be happy to pay for the time, the part and the job to have been done. And a flushing happening result.

Point was ... £35 down, still not done, part not found, buckets of water out of bath still only way to flush.

Where's me bucket ...

Why do both of you need to be at the builder's merchants, what with you being so busy, when neither of you know what you're looking for?

But perhaps your partner was concerned that given you are the main breadwinner that’s you’d whinge at him about that.

Successstory82 · 03/06/2023 15:51

Why did you need to go with him to get the part?

endofthelinefinally · 03/06/2023 15:52

I find it a good tip to look for specific parts online first then you can either order, or at least check it is in stock. There are lots of good spare parts websites.
I got a new motor for my vacuum cleaner on ebay.

Leftbutcameback · 03/06/2023 15:54

I think the issue you have (and I would have) is ownership of the problem. You want someone to fix it because you’re busy and no one has. You don’t care if it’s the plumber or your husband. I know exactly how you feel.

Although TBH I’ve never heard of a plumber who works like this - is it a mate or something? It’s a call out charge of £70 or so, and then either they fix it or come back with the parts and fix it.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 03/06/2023 15:54

Sirzy · 03/06/2023 15:14

It sounds like the plumber was actually pretty honest and instead of charging for something told him how to easily do it himself.

not sure why a trip to buy the part needs two of you! Leave him to sort it

This tbh. Fixing the poo for £35 is a best case scenario even with a trip to the shop.

MovinGroovinBarbie · 03/06/2023 15:54

Loo not poo obv

diddl · 03/06/2023 15:54

So he does know what he needs?

Did you ask anyone?

@JFDIYOLO

Of course you would have.

Perhaps your husband felt the need to go for the cheapest option given how quick you are to add the irrelevant context of your income disparity.

More of a time disparity here they have two jobs and still expected to pitch in to fix something they thought their partner had in hand instead its another job to the list

loislovesstewie · 03/06/2023 16:00

Just to clarify, what part do you actually need? Is it the syphon? Or is it the actual handle and the internal mechanism that goes with it? If you have a low level or high level cistern it's fairly easy to sort the bits out from your hardware store and replace them yourselves. I've done it several times. Close coupled loos are harder and I would not attempt that.

Ponoka7 · 03/06/2023 16:02

So you don't host a work person, they come out to look at the job. When you get to the shop, you ask for what you want, rather than wander round. If they don't stock it at all, they usually direct you to were does. Is he looking the part up online?

loislovesstewie · 03/06/2023 16:04

And of course, videos of 'how to' are readily available on YouTube.

GalileoHumpkins · 03/06/2023 16:07

I have visions of your partner offering the plumber hors d'oeuvres and refilling his wine glass, tinkly laughing then running off to the kitchen to check on the mains.

Did the shop not have staff to ask about the part?

Sueandstan · 03/06/2023 16:18

You come across as resentful of your partner and like you think he's a useless member of staff. I get that you want the loo fixed. But why didn't you or your partner just get the part on Wednesday or order it online? Why are you working two jobs and your partner none?

Hosted a plumber..? Did he have him over for drinks and nibbles?

🤣🤣 I came on thinking it was a typo!

changeyerheadworzel · 03/06/2023 16:33

Is he wandering around wondering or wondering and wandering around?

continentallentil · 03/06/2023 16:43

I wondered if you meant hosting in an um, intimate way.

Shit breaks OP, I am sure you've broken stuff. The plumber was honest with you and £35 is cheap. You don't need to stand in the hardware shop - you could have not come or sat outside and done something Very Important on your phone.

You are coming across as v full of yourself. We all need working plumbing, even people with FT jobs and side hustles.
