To cut my own hair?

I can’t get to the hairdresser but I look like Crystaltips and need a cut.

I’ve watched some YouTube tutorials, I have hairdressing scissors, and some nice hats.

YANBU - crack on you’ll be fine

YABU - are you stupid?

I've been cutting my own hair for the past 20 years. Sometimes better than others, but there has never been a disaster. Just make sure you cut less off than you think you want to when you start. That way you have length left for sorting out any mistakes. If your hair isn't straight, remember it will be shorter than when pulled taut!

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 01/06/2023 20:18

Yeah go for it! I cut my hair a couple of times in lockdown and it turned out well. Go for a blunt cut and nothing too complicated, it'll be fine! It's only hair after all, it'll grow back if worst comes to worst

Merryoldgoat · 01/06/2023 20:21

Thank you both - that’s kind of my thinking.

I want to do as much as I can myself as I’m time poor but need to look reasonable.

I’ve ordered a brow trimmer, a brow lamination kit and some dye too. Might also try a home lash lift.

I do mine simply because I don’t like going to the hairdresser. It’s my hair and I can’t see how it would be remotely controversial.

FirstBirthday · 01/06/2023 20:24

Do it! I started cutting my own hair in lockdown (although, admittedly, I’d had some practice whilst I was a student) and carried right on. Haven’t been to a hairdresser since 2019 now!

Do it a little at a time and buy some proper scissors from Amazon.

Ollifer · 01/06/2023 20:24

I cut my own. It's fine

Merryoldgoat · 01/06/2023 20:28

I have proper scissors as I cut my son’s hair so that’s helpful.

HIGHLY recommend 'Brad Mondo' tutorials. He is excellent and done some fab ones for the lockdown when people couldn't get out.

Divorcedalongtime · 01/06/2023 20:35

I’ve cut my hair loads of times. It’s only hair.

Mammajay · 01/06/2023 20:38

Definitely do it yourself. Particularly easy on long hair. Can anyone recommend scissors good enough to use for home cutting? Cheaper scissors in Boots etc get bad reviews. Very confusing range of prices online.

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 01/06/2023 20:40

I'm really impressed with you all! I can't even cut my own fringe without making a dog's breakfast of it!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 01/06/2023 20:41

I started doing this in lockdown and now do between professional cuts to avoid split ends. If your hair is a little wavy/you don't wear it dead straight and it's quite long you'll be fine

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 01/06/2023 20:42

You defo do need hairdressing scissors

I have cut my own hair, using Brad's videos. I always dye it myself using professional hair colour, so much more choice in colour and covers grey better.

Reggiebo · 01/06/2023 20:44

Another vote for brad

standoutfromthe · 01/06/2023 20:47

Go for it. I've been giving myself 'unicorn' haircuts since covid. Worked fine and looked great when I could be bothered to style it (mostly worn up). However yesterday I went back to the hairdresser for a colour and cut - first time in 4 years. Cost a bloody fortune but was such a lovely treat and I love what they did. I'm a greying 50 something so the colour has made a big difference to the boxes I've been buying from Tesco.

i love him 🤣

Haha at least you can blame him if it goes wrong. Everyone else does 🤣

Zoologydragon · 01/06/2023 20:49

Do it!! Apart from a brief period between 2016 -2018 and an overhaul in march 22 i've always done my own hair using various methods!

I have long hair and it has been neglected since the big overhaul in 22. Weekend just gone I got the hump with it and just cut 4 inches off. It's now too short however it needed doing as the ends were dead and so unbelievably dry.

The method that seems to work well for me is the front pony one. This weekend I chopped the dead off in a low pony then did a trim with the front pony.

I also colour my own hair and generally always have (except 2016-2018 I stopped because a hair dresser royally wrecked my hair....I have pix to prove it!)

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 01/06/2023 20:50

My hair is long and thick, I trim the ends myself, haven't been to a hairdresser for years, l also colour it myself and I get more compliments about my hair than anything else. I got some really good scissors from Amazon.

Screamingabdabz · 01/06/2023 20:51

Apparently Joanna Lumley cuts and colours her own hair - so she’s my inspiration!

Plump82 · 01/06/2023 20:53

My husband cuts my hair for me. I highlight it myself. Go for it. What's the worst that can happen. Hair grows..

AppleandSpice · 01/06/2023 21:03

Go for it.
ive always done dcs hair since they were little and I’ve been cutting my own hair for years after the last visit to the hairdresser royally fucked it up. I figured I’m not paying good money for a fuck up when I could do it myself for free!

Thankfully I’ve done a good job so far and haven’t had any major disasters (apart from when dd distracted me whilst cutting my fringe and hacked a big chunk out of it!) but other than that you tube is your friend!

Merryoldgoat · 01/06/2023 21:08

I’m gonna do before and after
