To cut my own hair?

I can’t get to the hairdresser but I look like Crystaltips and need a cut.

I’ve watched some YouTube tutorials, I have hairdressing scissors, and some nice hats.

YANBU - crack on you’ll be fine

YABU - are you stupid?

I cut my own. It's wavy and can get straggly so just a brief trim.

Before and after pics would be great!

Zoologydragon · 01/06/2023 21:12

@AppleandSpice glad I'm not the only one!! This thread has made me feel much better. When I had mine done last year it was over £200 when I'd had it done previously it was under half that!

I have cut my own hair, using Brad's videos. I always dye it myself using professional hair colour, so much more choice in colour and covers grey better.

Where do you buy professional colour from?

StrawberryWater · 01/06/2023 21:16

I’ve been doing mine for years. Go for it.

LilacRos · 01/06/2023 21:16

I did mine through lockdown but the timing coincided with my hair regrowing after chemo so I could hardly make it look worse. It was very liberating.
My hair is short though, can you cut short hair yourself and not look like a dogs breakfast?

Thank you both - that’s kind of my thinking.

I want to do as much as I can myself as I’m time poor but need to look reasonable.

I’ve ordered a brow trimmer, a brow lamination kit and some dye too. Might also try a home lash lift.

Whoa there Crystaltips! You can't go asking us about home hair cuts and then suddenly spring brow lamination on us! That's a whole other rank of possible disaster. I voted yes to home hair cuts but I'm having serious second thoughts on even that now.

STEP AWAY FROM THE BROW TRIMMERS!!

Badbudgeter · 01/06/2023 23:53

I front pony mines too. It’s fine I’ve got a slight wave and I find it softens quite a bit over a week or so. Semi permanent for the greys. A gloss for volume. Saves a fortune.

@Robyn847

I’ve done my brows a few times - it’s amazing.

I quite often cut my fringe, although it does look like a goat chewed it after, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do 😂

mindutopia · 02/06/2023 16:15

I started cutting my own hair during lockdown and never went back. Honestly, it looks no different, just £60 cheaper and I don’t have to have some pretend conversation answering some stylist’s probing questions about my life when I just want to sit there in peace. In fact, I cut it the other day and it looks great.

Oldraver · 02/06/2023 16:33

Few, I'm not the only one cutting their own hair 😁

We were once discussing hairdressers/cutting hair at work as my colleague is a regular, guy at work asked me about cutting my hair, so I just pulled it forward ala MN haircut and snipped it (it helps we use sharp scissors at work)

Their faces were a picture

Curlyhairedassasin · 02/06/2023 16:48

I have been diy-ing since my teens (I am old now, btw). Loads of tutorials online. Just go for it.

caringcarer · 02/06/2023 16:51

I started trimming an inch off of my long hair during lockdown. I just carried on. I used to go to hairdressers for a cut and hair colour now I just do both myself. I can hardly tell the difference tbh.

Merryoldgoat · 02/06/2023 18:02

Ok - I’m pretty happy!

Hopefully which is before/after is obvious!

Ill post brows and lashes later.

Brows look a bit mental but they settle down after a day.

Yeah cut your own hair, I am sure you 'll be fine but don't do what I did 2 weeks ago! Hahaha, like an eejit I erm ..............took too much off at the back. Laughed my head off when I saw it and called myself a plonker, as I look like Frankinsteins' chuwowwa I still think its funny.

Just remove the smallest amount of hair and use 2 mirrors, 1 infront andn1 behind.

I don't go nowhere with no sun hat😅🤣😅

Namechangeed · 02/06/2023 20:37

Amazing job!!

Manichean · 02/06/2023 20:39

I cut my own hair, I wear it very short so it is more of a challenge to get it looking OK. I use hair clippers for the sides and back and just cut the top using a cutting tool called combpal. Mostly it looks good but occasionally I have to wear a hat. I use Josh Wood hair colour which is not cheap but pretty good. I am not short of cash but I fucking hate going to the hairdresser.

Liveafr · 02/06/2023 21:02

I do it too and save lots of money
