To use a ride-sharing app in London or stick with taxis?

We're heading for London next week to view some flats in areas such as Tooting, Colliers Wood, Streatham, South Norwood, Upper Norwood, etc. We need to cover a lot of ground and DH can't walk as far/quickly as I can. He also won't take the tube due to claustrophobia but is happy on buses and overground trains.

So AIBU to use a ride-sharing app and if so which one? Last time we were there I couldn't get a lift on uber - it just kept saying no cars available. Are there any better ride-sharing apps than Uber for London? Or are there taxi ranks.with taxis easily available to hail in the street at all these different locations?

No there aren't. Do you know which order you need to visit each place? Can you plot a route on citymapper?

If you were going with an estate agent I'd expect them to drive you.

You could download Gett as Uber and Bolt.

Colliers Wood has a taxi office opposite the tube (its not a rank) with cars nearby. But mostly they are prebooked.
Can't think of anything at Tooting .

But busses from main areas are every 5 mins. If you were seeing roads for house viewings the agents would give you lifts?

Tootootoot · 28/05/2023 08:55

Thanks, I hadn't even thought of asking agents for lifts! We haven't made the appointments yet so don't know the order - I will make appointments this week for viewings next week.

I suppose I'd do 2 things.

1 is a tour of likely areas -plot a good bus route for coffees in each town centre. Maybe also visit Balham/clapham or Wimbledon for the "nicer" town centres that you'd go to if you wanted to do proper shopping (whatever that means)

Then focus on seeing flats in one/2areas. Flats in say Tooting are not in scarce supply.

Yeah it’s common in London for the agents to take you from office to property or from property to property. Obviously not so likely if property B is with different agents than property A.

Uber usually quite reliable in South London. Was it pouring with rain last time you tried?

Oubliette86 · 28/05/2023 09:29

There’s a mini cab office next to the Sainsbury’s in Tooting, alternatively the 57 bus will take you through Colliers Wood, Tooting & Streatham.

I love in the area & have never had a problem with Uber, usually get a car in a few minutes.

EggInANest · 28/05/2023 09:32

Was it raining or a rail strike when you couldn’t get an Uber?

YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna · 28/05/2023 09:35

If you're looking to move to the area maybe would be best to space out the viewings and jump on a bus (57 most likely) to see the surrounding area, streets and high streets for where you may move to?
What's the inspo for this particular part of South London, and where are you coming from? Tooting can be a shock to the system if you're from a more rural area 😄 I love it through, thriving and mix of shops, places to eat and drink, different people and cultures! Has a lively vibe.

Great idea to take a bus tour @YouPutTheScrewInTheTuna , I will check out the 57! We're moving basically because we can 😁our jobs are pretty mobile and I fancy living in London. I started a thread in property and DIY about it a few weeks ago and got lots of brilliant advice. Now time to explore that advice in much more detail. Thread is here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/property/4804768-if-we-like-tooting-where-else-would-we-like?page=5

Yes it was raining when I couldn't get an uber. I probably added 1 + 1 and got 3 for that reason!

We're looking for a flat in London and based on our research (basically reading lots of mumsnet threads) we've visited Blackheath and Tooting so far....
