To keep butter out of the fridge?

We’re talking proper non-spreadable, goes rock solid in the fridge butter. Not weird-tasting, filled with chemicals so it spreads fake butter.

I like it in the fridge and I just get it out an hour or so before I want to use it so I can spread it. I don’t like too soft.

Yanbu. I've used butter for over a decade and it's always been fine.
Only in extreme heatwaves have I put it in the fridge. I do eat a lot of butter though so it doesn't have much time to go off.

SwedishEdith · 27/05/2023 17:24

Normal. In a butter dish out of the sun, it's fine.

Oysterbabe · 27/05/2023 17:25

I keep mine in a butter dish on the side. It doesn't belong in the fridge.

Frenchfancy · 27/05/2023 17:25

Ours always lives out unless it is 30+ outside. We've got an insulated butter dish from Lakeland which is brilliant.

inverness123 · 27/05/2023 17:26

I keep the spare butter in the fridge, and the butter we’re currently using in the butter dish in a cupboard. I don’t understand why people keep butter in the fridge, except when it’s so hot it melts at room temp - there’s no need and it makes the butter almost unusable.

xsquared · 27/05/2023 17:26

Keeping it out of the fridge is the normal in our household.
The only time it ever goes too soft is if there's a heatwave, so that's rare.

ColdHandsHotHead · 27/05/2023 17:26

I never keep butter in the fridge, once I've opened the packet, but I do put it in a covered dish else the bloody cat will lick it.

MardyBra · 27/05/2023 17:26

My kids think it’s minging. But they made it through to adulthood ok.

I'm in the South West of France and it is normal to keep proper butter out of the fridge here. And it is already steaming hot outside.

bibbityboppityboo · 27/05/2023 17:27

Do you have a butter bell? It's very helpful to keep it out of the fridge in!

CaptainSeven · 27/05/2023 17:27

Have an insulated butter dish, kept in a cupboard. Proper butter never goes in the fridge.

Even in a heatwave (Scotland) our butter is ok.

MardyBra · 27/05/2023 17:28

Never heard of a butter bell. Just use a regular butter dish here.

Out of the fridge but definitely in a butter dish as one of the dogs is very partial to it and can snork a whole packet (including wrapper) in seconds

PriamFarrl · 27/05/2023 17:30

Yep. I keep mine in a butter dish on the side. Even in that incredibly hot summer we had it wasn’t a problem. But my kitchen doesn’t get any direct sunlight so it’s never that hot.

dementedpixie · 27/05/2023 17:30

Ours is kept in a glass butter dish on the worktop

Florenz · 27/05/2023 17:31

I always keep it in the fridge. My parents always kept it in a butter dish on the side and I always hated it.

MardyBra · 27/05/2023 17:31

Just googled butter bell. The Le Creuset one looks like a right faff.

In a butter dish on the side

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/05/2023 17:32

You'd get on well with DP. He seems to think that butter should be dripped in infinitesimal drips that disappear only to coagulate on the plate, rather than allowed to slowly turn into a joyful combination of cold, soft, salty and melting as you convey the food item into the mouth. And then gets to go rancid in summer.

I've put it in the fridge many times, only to find that he's taken it out and microwaved the entire thing as well, so buying a cold butter storage vessel would be utterly pointless.

In the absence of a decent larder, he's a heathen.

Awrite · 27/05/2023 17:32

Butter in sturdy butter dish

Couple of spares in the fridge.

CostelloJones · 27/05/2023 17:34

My husband and I argue about this all the time 😂

he’s an out of the fridge person and I’m an in the fridge person…. His family are really posh so we’ve always joked it’s an upper class thing

when you leave it out it gets a weird cheesy taste imo

What about when you just want to spread rather than melt?
your DH is being very unreasonable with the microwaving thing though.

How long does it last out of the fridge in a butter dish? A week/month?

xsquared · 27/05/2023 17:36

It doesn't need microwaving if you keep it out of the fridge.

A pack doesn't usually last long enough for it to go rancid either in our household.
