To keep butter out of the fridge?

We’re talking proper non-spreadable, goes rock solid in the fridge butter. Not weird-tasting, filled with chemicals so it spreads fake butter.

It’s fine

M and S and Presidente do proper spreadable butter - just butter whipped with air, if it gets terribly hot and you need something that will spread a bit better from the fridge.

How long does it last out of the fridge in a butter dish? A week/month?

A few days in our house. We get through a lot of butter.

My husband and I argue about this all the time 😂

he’s an out of the fridge person and I’m an in the fridge person…. His family are really posh so we’ve always joked it’s an upper class thing

when you leave it out it gets a weird cheesy taste imo

Do you take it out an hour before you want to use it or do you microwave it?

It will only taste weird if it's been out for too long I guess, but the only time that's happened is when we've been on holiday and forgot to put the remaining butter in the dish, in the fridge.

We don’t use that much butter so mine tends to take two or three weeks to be eaten.

tailinthejam · 27/05/2023 17:50

Ours lives in a butter dish in the cupboard with the jams etc all year round. New ones we keep in the fridge until needed. When it is really hot weather, we don't put a whole pack of butter in the dish - just a smallish lump.

Probably at least 2/3 weeks. Not sure tbh. Ours is out at least that and it doesn't go off normally, although it might do in hotter weather.

We keeps ours out, because why wouldn't you? I'm curious as to what has changed and when for people to think that 'current' butter needs to be in the fridge?

Just put out what you think you'll use in the next week or two at most in a butter dish, or sealy tub etc. It doesn't go off in that time, however hot it is.

In a butter dish in the bread cupboard.

JudgeRudy · 27/05/2023 18:02

I don't have a butter dish, I have 2 Gu glass dishes* which I alternate. I slice off approx 1/3 of a block at a time and leave that at room temperature. The rest stays in the fridge.

*finally found a use for them

AgnesX · 27/05/2023 18:02

I like it out (in a butter dish) so I can slather it on a biccie at any given moment. Mr X likes his in the fridge. We compromise with the easy spread stuff. Kerry gold for prefere

megletthesecond · 27/05/2023 18:02

I get through a block a week by myself so it's never had chance to go off.
I have no idea why my cholesterol levels are so good after typing that sentence.

AgnesX · 27/05/2023 18:02

Preference 🙄

Favouritefruits · 27/05/2023 18:04

Of course you keep butter out of the fridge, it’s unusable and hard as rock out of the fridge!

SmurfHaribos · 27/05/2023 18:05

Spreadable butter has vegetable oil in to make it spread. YABU because of your suggestion it’s filled with chemicals and tastes weird.

Cookerhood · 27/05/2023 18:06

In the winter a whole block goes in the butter dish on the counter (it's only me). In the summer I cut a chunk off & keep it out.

Because eating butter doesn't affect your cholesterol levels, it's a myth put out by the sugar people.

@AgnesX I haven't seen Kerrygold spreadable butter in years. We get the M&S one in winter, but get normal butter in summer because its still properly soft and cheaper.

CosmosQueen · 27/05/2023 18:08

I never put my butter dish in the fridge, it’s an insulated one 😊

crumpet · 27/05/2023 18:10

Ours is never key in the fridge, aside from true heatwave where the butter would otherwise melt. It’s out all year round, in a butter dish with lid.

user1471523870 · 27/05/2023 18:12

Eye opener! I come from southern Europe and butter in fridge is the standard for obvious reasons. But I love to spread it on toast and I asked myself how the British manage to spread rock solid butter on toast every day.
I am off to buy a butter dish!

Of course it does, it's pure fat 😂

Also, because it's fat, bacteria doesn't really grow on it, so it's safe to keep out of the fridge.

JulieHoney · 27/05/2023 18:14

I love my butter dish, it's very pretty. I put half a pack of butter in it at a time.

Tesco I think (Mr X does the shopping). I do see other brands so it depends on the price and shop.

Georgyporky · 27/05/2023 18:24

I cut the pack in half, one in the fridge & one in the butter dish.
It did take me a while to train DH to wash the dish in between

Qilin · 27/05/2023 18:26

We always leave ours out of the fridge unless the weather is really hot.
It is warm here now but butter is still out, but kept in the shade in a butter dish.

Done the same for years and been fine so far. And I have a really dodgy stomach at times, so if it was likely to cause issues I'd have known about I'm sure!

I just can't be doing with having to remember to remove it from the fridge an hour before I need it - and tbh, sometimes I just need (want) it there and then with no planning 😂

crabbyoldappletree · 27/05/2023 18:27

Kept in a butter dish on the counter top most of the time. Our kitchen is normally cool as it's north facing. Sometimes though in very hot weather I put it in the fridge. When I want to use it, I cut a slab, wrap it in foil, and put it in my pocket to soften up!

AuroraForever · 27/05/2023 18:29

Lidded butter dish in the cupboard. We get through a lot so it’s never around for long. Plus it’s kind of a weather indicator as the easier the knife goes in it, the warmer it’s getting!
