Found this on the lawn - would AIBU to move away, very far away! Picture of bug attached for anyone who isn’t a fan!

Was out in the garden with ddogs, just popping the washing line up and look down and saw the below. I’m not going to lie I was scared, no idea what is it. It’s about 4cms long and around the same across.

Any ideas that make staying in my home a possibility or do I just need to move away, very very far away. I’m in the North of England if that helps. I’m thinking maybe the outer Hebrides are my only option?

It’s hard to see much detail from your photos through glass, but could they be cockchafers, aka May bugs? See below from Nat Hist Mus. They are really big buggers.

They're big but completely harmless. Leave it be, it won't attack you or your food.

Actually just noticed you're in the North. They're rarer the further north you go, but I think cockchafers are one that's doing quite well, I think the long dry summers have helped. I think they feed on tree leaves.

we had lots in my old garden. And huge stag beetles I’d have to bat off landing on the table.
first time one flew at me I ran in my house. Great big bastard things, adore them now and was sad it’s been developed. As they take years to develop

If you don't like bugs, I really wouldn't recommend the Hebrides. Have you heard of midgies?

It's just a bug.

Things live outside. Unless it's trying to crawl down your throat or lay eggs in your ears, just move a few feet to the side and carry on with whatever you were doing?

Or go indoors if it bothers you that much.

Yep that looks like a cockchafer. The evening I brought my newborn home one of these got in through the window, divebombed me and got caught in my hair. Horrible things (shudders).

Next month is stag beetle season op so watch out 😂

Aaah the delightful cockchafer. We had one in our kitchen lamp shade last night and it sounded like a fucking attack helicopter.

Yes it's a cockchafer/maybug. I live in Suffolk and get a lot in the house if I leave the door open. I'm originally from the North and had never seen one until I moved down here. I found them quite scary initially, they make such a noise and I didn't know if they had a sting. But they're harmless, just a bit disturbing, the massive buggers.

What are you scared of, exactly? Just leave it alone.

They are big - but won't hurt you. I wouldn't leave one running around in my house, but the garden is fine.

aS the others have said, it's harmless, and quite cute. Also, don't bother with the Outer Hebrides if you want a bug-free life. I live there and we have aaallllll the bugs! Everything from the tiny midge to massive stag beetles.

They’re harmless unless they lay eggs in your grass and then the bastards will ruin your lawn every year.

One of these flew into my bedroom last night. It sounded like a fucking fighter jet! So loud!

I hid under the duvet. No way was I risking that monster dove bombing me.

May bug for sure. Had one get in the house a few years ago. Bloody terrifying if you are scared of bugs! But harmless.
