Pathological aversion to white trousers. Am I wrong?

Maybe this is more of a Style and Beauty question, but it runs so deep with me, it's almost irrational.

I have long hated the idea of wearing white trousers! I have no problem with them for cricketers, or white jodphurs for riders, but the whole white summer trouser thing makes me quite nauseous.

Perhaps it goes back to worry as a kid that a period might leak and show an embarassing mark? I think they used to advertise sanitary products using women in white trousers, so maybe that's it?

Is it just me who shudders at the thought of white trousers? Am I unreasonable?

Depends on the white trousers, tight, polyester absolutely not, wide linen, I really like😊

GettingStuffed · 18/05/2023 15:54

I'm in the I'd wear them out of the house and within 5 minutes I'd be wearing dirty white trousers. Thank God I'm past periods.

mymeatballsmymeatballs · 18/05/2023 15:58

In my 20+ years of being an adult and buying my own clothes, I've never once bought white trousers. I would ruin them in seconds. I think they look great on other women though! I just always wonder how they keep them clean🤣my DH aunt wears them but she doesn't have children and lives in a perfect show home so it makes sense that she'd keep them clean!

Nordicrain · 18/05/2023 16:05

I like them, but do think you generally have to be very slim to wear them. Not sure why.

fajitaaa · 18/05/2023 16:06

They look awful on most people unless on holiday

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/05/2023 16:08

Too much in the of insults as a teenager to wear them without expecting abuse (mild versions of which have already been posted)

You're too fat
I can see your knickers
They're dirty
You look cheap
You look old
You look trashy
They're out of date
Does that mean you've got your period? (Accompanied by renditions of WHOOOAA BODYFORM every time you wear them).
They're too tight.
They're too loose.
They're not expensive enough.
You've got red on you.

I hate them. Gangs of middle aged women suddenly wake up one day and decide they have now reached the white trouser wearing age. Like a badge of honour for reaching middle age.

Oh really, I associate it with being young. I am almost 40 and feel too old for them. I did have a lovely pair of white jeans I used to wear when I was 19 and slim though.

MsWhitworth · 18/05/2023 16:41

I associate them with Princess Diana. Worn with a navy blazer.

Sissynova · 18/05/2023 16:43

YABU
I love a white/cream trouser.
Jeans, culottes, cigarette trousers. I wear them a lot April-October.

Watchkeys · 18/05/2023 16:44

Feelings aren't right or wrong, reasonable or unreasonable. Only actions.

If you don't like something, you don't like it.

sherbertyellowteddy · 18/05/2023 16:47

Oh I'm.with you OP! I'd be so nervous wearing them but my sister has just gave me two gorgeous pairs of culottes. One pair are white and I'd love to be able to wear them but I'd definitely sit on something and look like I'd had an accident.

Starhead69 · 18/05/2023 16:48

I love white linen wide leg trousers. But not keen on white jeans. When I was 12 I went to La Rochelle on a school trip and wore white jeans on the windiest sunniest day. We bought ice creams and the chocolate ice cream I bought melted too fast and the wind blew the chocolate all over my lovely white jeans. Have never wore white jeans since

strawberryurchin · 18/05/2023 16:49

I think I am just nervous of ANY white clothing at all. It always ends up with stains, marks, even if you wash it separately. And usually 5 mins after putting on it gets dirty. As much as I love the look I'd rather not have to worry about it and it's infinutely more practical to wear dark clothes (ideally black).

ZaZathecat · 18/05/2023 16:51

I like them and would be very happy to be likened to Liz Hurley in the nineties!

coxesorangepippin · 18/05/2023 16:53

You have to be stick thin, no risk of spillage and part of a Wham! video to get away with them

Fartooold · 18/05/2023 16:53

I wear them when abroad in holiday, love them then.

They languish at the back of the wardrobe when at home!

No idea why - I have several items of holidays only clothing🤣

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed this to be true. Most people I’m friends with have a pair of white jeans in their wardrobe (early 30s) and they’re see just as many girls in their 20s in white jeans too.

mondaytosunday · 18/05/2023 17:02

I have a relative who almost exclusively wears white jeans and white converse trainers. She's very skinny and looks fab, but lives in London and has a dog so don't know how she manages it!
Doesn't Liz Hurley also favour the white jeans look?

Goodread1 · 18/05/2023 17:16

I don't wear white trousers or rarely white whites
Sometimes white blouse,

as the fear of menstrual accidental bleeding was the issue ,

thankfully mirer coil absolutely game changer in more ways than one,

Bloody excruciating painful whilst having mirer coil put in,
Well the stages of measuring cervix, !

Makes me eyes water just thinking of it really...

Xiaoxiong · 18/05/2023 17:20

I was always like you but then a few years ago when the kids were older and less messy, I just thought - they always look amazing on other people of pretty much any shape and size, so why shouldn't they look good on me. I got a pair of straight leg white jeans from M&S and haven't looked back - I am bigger on top (boobs/tum) than on the bottom so it means I can wear a darker blouse or top and then white jeans and sandals to break up all the dark clothing and feel a bit more summery. (I wear jeans all summer anyway except if it's goes above 35c)

I think everyone's get a bit grubby but only you notice your own grub as no one else is that close to see. I never notice other people's jeans being stained or grubby so they probably aren't noticing or caring about mine either!

There's a reason a lot of women past menopause feel their moment has arrived.

Can middle aged women not wear clothes they like? What would you have them wearing?

I don’t shudder at them but I have never worn them and never will. The risk of sudden unexpected period is one thing, as is the high chance I will drop some food or drink on them. And even if I manage to avoid all of that, I think they will start looking very grubby very quickly. I can’t see them working for me.

What a horribly misogynistic and ageist little statement, it’s also bullshit.

YukoandHiro · 18/05/2023 18:33

I love them on tall French women but in messy old me I look like a dirty sack of potatoes within seconds. Shame.
