To ask what timescales after a provided service you generally expect to have to make payment

I had some rubbish cleared out yesterday by a maintenance company. Cost £100.
He completed the work yesterday afternoon while I was at work and text me his bank details. I tried to pay yesterday evening after I got home, but I got a message on my banking app saying they could not verify the details, so I text him asking to confirm they were correct. He replied this morning confirming they were and I said I would get payment across ASAP. I planned to get this done this evening when I got home as I dont have a chance to do this at work. He text me at 6pm before I had got home saying "the payment has still not been made". I replied saying- "Hi I haven't even got home from work yet but I will transfer, do not worry" AIBU?

Yes YABU. I'd expect to pay same day for that.

If you had time to text, you had time to send him the money IMO.

I usually do it on the day of the service, o wouldn’t expect them to have to wait much longer.

In this situation would have paid via the app as soon as got confirmation.

I would expect payment to be made immediately after completion, certainly as soon as the correct bank details were provided. There seems to be some weird expectation that you have an extended period of time to pay tradesmen - occasionally that might be true for large businesses, but for small to medium trades I always pay within an hour of work completion. I do not think this chap was being unreasonable to chase you at all.

I think if you say in the AM that you're getting the payment over ASAP and you've got confirmation of the details I'd assume you'd have sent by lunch latest.

When you do that kind of work people not paying and chasing them is almost bigger than the job itself

You'd already made one "excuse" then you'd said you'd pay ASAP and you didn't (you could sent a text, why not a payment?). He's sent a reasonably polite reminder.

I pay as soon as they've finished the work/I've had a chance to check it.

I don't think the evening of the following day is awful, but I also think it's reasonable for him to chase it up

Same day or next morning unless there's a problem in which case I'd let them know a time scale. Saying asap would mean right now.

would depend on what was agreed when I engaged the service. It’s not unusual to pay on completion - thinking window cleaner, oven cleaner, carpet cleaner, shredding service etc.

I got the invoice by email at 9.20 pm last night.. I transferred the money and got a 'thank you' email at 9.25pm.
I kick ass if my pay is late.. don't see anything different for tradesmen.

Don't use "ASAP" when you mean "late this evening".

Since you use a banking app, I don't see why you couldn't have done it from work on a break, or even in the time that you spent replying to him instead. I just have internet banking for my main account with one of those little gadgets to authenticate the login, so I couldn't do that.

I wouldn't ask to confirm details. I often find that banks "can't verify". It's his responsibility to give you the correct details.

I think you needed to be more specific. Will do it as soon as I get home before 7pm for example. Phone app isn’t good at setting up new payees so. I use the desktop. ASAP to me means within an hour.

There was. Even if you're just buying a packet of biscuits from a shop, there's a contract there. A contract doesn't mean a written and signed contract. Essentially it's an agreement (here: this guy will remove the rubbish and OP will pay 100 pounds).

The app always tells me that the name matches the account and it even said to check the details with the recipient, so I thought that was the best case of action at the time

Yeah thats fair. My banking app logs me out everytime I close the screen (must be a security thing) so you have to write the account details on a sheet of paper to copy them from as you can't flip back and forward between the text and banking app to fill them in which makes it a bit more faffy to do while busy, but yeah appreciate asap probably was probably a bit ambiguous!

You went wrong telling him ASAP. If you'd have said this evening when I'm home he would have expected it this evening. You put him in a position where he was unsure when his money was coming.

I once hired a pair of plasterers to redo some walls while I was working away for the week. We agreed I'd drop the money off on the Saturday.

They turned up on Friday night as I was getting back from my trip away asking for the money, as otherwise they wouldn't have enough to go out on the lash that night. They weren't even decent about it and were a bit intimidating.

I need to use the card reader thing to set up a new payee on my banking app, so I wouldn't have been able to do this until I got home either.
