I had some rubbish cleared out yesterday by a maintenance company. Cost £100.
He completed the work yesterday afternoon while I was at work and text me his bank details. I tried to pay yesterday evening after I got home, but I got a message on my banking app saying they could not verify the details, so I text him asking to confirm they were correct. He replied this morning confirming they were and I said I would get payment across ASAP. I planned to get this done this evening when I got home as I dont have a chance to do this at work. He text me at 6pm before I had got home saying "the payment has still not been made". I replied saying- "Hi I haven't even got home from work yet but I will transfer, do not worry" AIBU?

We give individuals 5 days to pay on the invoices we send out, businesses 30 days.

I usually pay asap. Which is usually straight away. But I disagree with PPs that ASAP was ambiguous, you were planning on paying as soon as possible. It's completely reasonable not to do it during work.

Same as most, for that sort of work it would be 'on completion'.

Obviously as there was an issue with recognising the account, it was sensible to check, and, as he answered in the morning, when you were at work, (with hindsight) it would have been helpful to say "Okay, thanks. I wanted to make sure I'd not copied a detail wrong to make sure the money goes to the right account. I'll do it tonight when I get home".

I have a trade. I expect payment within 24hrs once work is complete plus the client has had a chance to check it, if they weren't home when I'd finished. If they need me to confirm a new final total (eg because additional work was added) or send my payment details, I would expect payment within 24hrs of my message/email giving that information.
It is very common and very annoying for clients to delay payment by pinging messages over asking things like "can you remind me of the total?" (It's right there if you scroll back 5 messages) or "can you send me your bank details please?" (It's the same account you paid the deposit into, and again, detailed a few messages up). As a result, I would have rolled my eyes and assumed you were also using delaying tactics especially with the 'ASAP', which sounds intentionally vague TBH. I agree with PPs, that I would have wondered why you had time to reply but not transfer the money, but I may still be grumpy about last week's client who had committed both of the above annoyances. When I sent through the details I got a text back telling me how happy they were, but payment (no small amount as it was several weeks' labour plus materials) took a further 36hrs...

I think you'd have been expected to pay as soon as he confirmed the details yes.

Effingmagicfairy · 17/05/2023 21:41

I’ve had it where my bank can’t verify details, I normally send a token amount anyway, £1, ask recipient if they’ve received, then transfer remainder. I normally pay straightaway or wait for invoice if they’re sending one.

LolaSmiles · 17/05/2023 21:44

I'd pay the same day and if there was a problem or details needed clarifying then I'd probably say end of the working day that the information was clarified.

6pm the day after the service has been provided is in reminder territory to me.

FijiSea · 17/05/2023 21:45

I bank transfer to tradesmen while they are still there , so it’s done there and then.
Check job , quick chat , confirm transfer that’s it.
Have you paid him yet ?

2bazookas · 17/05/2023 21:47

Same day I get the invoice.

CurlewKate · 17/05/2023 21:51

Same day. Of course.

As some others have said I need to wait and do it on my laptop with a card reader to set up a new payee. I think it’s fine that you were going to do it that evening (but probably misunderstood because you put asap)

I am sure I would have written asap too though, because to me that would mean as soon as I can which will be after work when I get home and have the laptop and card reader. Lesson to us both there for the future I suppose 😀

at least it wasn’t as bad as the guy who came to valet our car, was very late so ran over so I had to go on school pick up, then couldn’t transfer the funds whilst I had primary aged children running around and moaning for snacks before I then had to take them straight back out for their evening class. Car valet guy text me at 6pm saying ‘I have not received payment’ It was less than 3 hours after he had finished and I had said ‘I have to go to school now so will pay tonight’
