Is it that unusual to be grey in 30s?

I've been getting grey hairs since I was 22. I'm just about to turn 32 now, I don't have that much still but I have got several strands of grey all over. My hair is very dark brown naturally too so it shows more.

Anyway a colleague has said to me on the shift in shock 'I can see grey hair at the back of your head!! Are you going grey?!"

I explained that I have been doing for the last 10 years. I feel a bit embarrassed that I was put on the spot. I dye it sometimes if I feel it's getting quite noticeable.

Is it that uncommon really? Maybe she thinks I'm younger than I am. Probably going to have many posts now from people saying they didn't get a single grey hair until they were 75!

Ha - I’ve been going grey since my mid 20’s. I’m 40 now and approx 50% grey which I don’t enjoy, so I colour my hair. It’s genetic and no, it’s really not that unusual. My SIL on the other hand is exactly the same age as me and not a single grey on her head and has never dyed her hair in her life. 😤

shivawn · 13/05/2023 19:33

Not unusual at all. Although I guess most young women use dye to cover their greys so it's somewhat uncommon to see them on younger people.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 13/05/2023 19:33

Oh an also that person was clearly a moron. Sorry if it made you feel shit.

Useruser222 · 13/05/2023 19:38

I'm 32 and have loads of greys got my first one when I was 26. My dad had a full head of grey but the time he was 20 so I got a good run I guess!

WonkyFeelings · 13/05/2023 19:38

I was fully grey by 30 🤷🏼‍♀️

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 13/05/2023 19:43

My mum started going grey at 17. My dad at 68. I got my mum's genes - not quite as early as 17 but I started fading at 24 and getting silver strands around 28. I dye now at 34. Like you I have naturally very dark brown hair so the silver ones really do show up.

MavisMcMinty · 13/05/2023 19:44

My OH has been going grey since I met him in his mid-20s, salt and pepper then, now bright white at 65. To balance it out a bit, I will be 60 this year and have very few grey hairs, it’s still dark brown, as was one of my uncles when he died in his mid-70s, probably inherited the same gene as him.

I have always joked that it’s because throughout my life I’ve never washed my hair more than twice a week at most (and now I’m retired it’s more like once a fortnight).

LadyMcLadyface · 13/05/2023 19:44

I'm 33 and have grey hairs, and that person was really rude.

rainraingoawaay · 13/05/2023 19:45

I'm 30 and have a handful of greys (annoyingly down my parting!) and dye the hell out of it 😂 my older sister is fully grey, she went grey early on like our mum (fully grey before 30) so I think it's genetic.

It seems fairly common imo!

abeaverhausen · 13/05/2023 19:46

I started going grey in my early 20s, was very noticeable at 26. It's almost all grey with white streaks at 40

bumbledeedum · 13/05/2023 19:46

I found the odd grey hair at 18. At 36 I have a noticeable patch on the top of my head. I'm dark haired so it's quite noticeable but I'm also lazy and don't really care so I don't do anything about it. Weird for anyone to find it usual to have grey hairs at 30 something.

Reugny · 13/05/2023 19:47

It isn't uncommon.

When you go grey and the rate depends on genes including ethnicity.

Oh and loads of people dye their hair so you don't know those who have gone grey in their 20s and early 30s are grey.

Sissynova · 13/05/2023 19:47

It’s not unusual. I notice greys in pretty much all of my friends, all early to mid 30s.

Curseofthenation · 13/05/2023 19:47

Not sure how common it is. I am 32 and have dark brown hair and I don't have any greys but my two dark haired younger sisters do have a few greys. We just all checked each other's hair as we're all sitting together 😂

fyn · 13/05/2023 19:47

31 and starting to get noticeable greys in very dark hair. Mine really seemed to start going grey after I had children but equally it could be a coincidence! I’ve never dyed it so I’m not entirely sure what to do about it either 😂

MavisMcMinty · 13/05/2023 19:48

I had a good friend in her 20s when I was a teenager, she was a twin and both of them were pure white-haired by the time they hit 25. It looked amazing actually, their beautiful young faces even more striking against their white hair.

90stalgia · 13/05/2023 19:48

I had loads of grey by the time I was 30. I use henna to cover it. Goodness knows how grey it really is now I am nearly 50 😃

My husband is in his 60s and has hardly any grey - his dad was the same in his 80s.

Total genetic lottery.

MySunnyDay · 13/05/2023 19:48

I found my first grey hair at 16..... In my mid twenties I remember standing at the photocopier when a male colleague who was waiting to use it remarked upon all the greys on the back of my head. Like he had never seen such a sight before 🙄 Made me feel shit at the time.

I did dye it for most of my 20s and 30s but have fully embraced the grey in my 40s and I really love it! I too have very dark hair naturally.

2chocolateoranges · 13/05/2023 19:49

I started dying my hair in my late 30’s. I had persevered with the odd grey hair but the roots were starting to get bad.

my mum went grey quite early on I don’t ever remember her with hair other than grey and she was 27 when she had me, then again her mum, my gran, was never grey and she died at 79.

Bakingwithmyboys · 13/05/2023 19:50

I've been going grey for years. It was quite noticeable at my parting for a couple.of years before I embraced it at 36. I used to dye my hair but now don't. At 37 I have grey hair down to my ears as I'm still growing out my colour.

There are many FB groups with people in their 30's accepting their gray. But I feel it is little earlier than the average.

Laurama91 · 13/05/2023 19:51

Been going grey since I wad around 16. Also have dark hair. I have a big patch in the front which someone at work has told me he thinks looks cool. I think I must be around 80% now at 31. I still dye it but it doesn't bother me so much now.

fridaseyebrows · 13/05/2023 19:52

From age 18 I have had a white badger stripe and since about 38/39 have been very grey.

I think it comes from my dad - he started turning grey in early 20s.

Years ago my parents brought DB (a baby at the time) to a hearing specialist who commented on my dad’s grey hair - the specialist asked if my dad had hearing problems (he does) and said that premature greying can be linked to loss of hearing. No idea if this is true or not, but my own hearing has deteriorated more quickly than the norm over the last 10 years whereas my sister, a year younger and no grey hair, not at all.

I’d be interested if anyone else had ever been told the same!

itsrainin · 13/05/2023 19:53

I’ve noticed people with naturally dark hair often go grey at a young age. I know loads of people who started getting grey strands in their 20s (I’m 24). They don’t tend to dye it. Sometimes I even notice it in photos of people I don’t know on social media. It’s just one of those things.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 13/05/2023 19:54

Not that unusual. I'm only just starting to get a few at 36 but my husband was getting them from 22

woodhill · 13/05/2023 19:55

Yes, I started getting greys in my fringe in my early 20s
