To think using horses the way the royals do needs to be stopped.

The way their horses are used in ceremonies really isn't good. I don't expect everyone to get it, lots of people who don't know about horses just see it and think oh look how lovely, lots of riders don't see the issue. I don't find it comfortable watching horses some just under their threshold and a few over it.

I've had horses for years mostly rescues, I don't subscribe to the BHS way of thinking so I'm already labelled as 'odd' I find this sort of treatment of animals sad.

YANBU OP. I feel sad for the horses.

Ireolu · 06/05/2023 10:36

Was just saying the same to my 6 yo.

What are they doing with the horses? I’m not watching.

MiddleParking · 06/05/2023 10:38

I know nothing about horses but one of them looked really unhappy!

IglesiasPiggl · 06/05/2023 10:38

I am not a horsey person but there do seem to be an awful lot out today. Personally, I think the procession of troops on foot has just as much impact, they could have far fewer horses. Maybe just for the carriages. By the way, does anyone know why only half the horses pulling the carriage have a rider?

Want2beme · 06/05/2023 10:39

I was just thinking the same thing. I haven't a clue about horses, I just know I love them and think they're magnificent creatures. When you see horses restricted by reigns, drums being played atop their backs, having to cope with so much noise, etc, it's very upsetting.

I wouldn't be watching the coronation at all, but DM will only give me a hard time if I don't 🙄

DojaPhat · 06/05/2023 10:39

Yes, and while we're at get rid of the monarchy too!

WildFlowerBees · 06/05/2023 10:45

I'm awaiting a chorus of I've had horses for years they're excited. They aren't, I've studied horse behaviour for many years and Equine sciences. Many of them are displaying discomfort and I can't understand why it's deemed ok. We treat no other animal like horses, many on average have 7 different homes in their lifetime. We don't treat our other animals like this or cars!

It's outdated and unfair on the horses.

I can't see the Monarchy being around after William. I'm not a royalist but not avidly against them either, I do find all the pomp quite grotesque given the state of our country at present.

YADNBU. Very cruel. The RF don’t give a toss about animals, they simply exist for their convenience.

And a resounding ‘yes’ to abolishing the monarchy while we are at it. 👏🏼 👏🏼

I'm only 38 but have had more than seven dogs and seven cars in my life. Only had one horse though. I'm really not sure what point your trying to make?

PuttingDownRoots · 06/05/2023 10:50

A lot of those horses didn't look happy today.

WildFlowerBees · 06/05/2023 10:52

The point is on average 1 horse has goes to 7 different homes. Most other domestic animals don't, most cars don't have 7 previous owners. My point is that horses are used as a commodity not all of course. Lots of people have a horse and have them for life (like me) I'm not sure you understood my post correctly. Maybe it was my wording.

It's weird animals are used by humans to do as we please in general, including as pets and eating them and their by products.

It's not weird, it happens throughout the animal kingdom.

Blamethecat57 · 06/05/2023 11:09

Completely agree.

Why can't they get in a car and stand behind people marching?
Why the horses?

So many look nervous or distressed.

In my opinion it's weird. I'd find it less weird if we still hunted food and ate it raw or prepared it ourselves, but what other animals are buying slabs of rotting animal carcass in shops? Keeping other species as pets and hauling them around on leads or whatever else?

There’s no driver. There are riders (directing where the horses go) plus people on foot. There’s a back wheel brake for emergencies. People on foot in case a horse falls and the traces (leather straps) need cutting/removing.

Where on Earth do you shop that sells rotting meat? I’d suggest you contact your local authority.

Stickytreacle · 06/05/2023 11:14

Agree op, and Ive had horses all of my 57 years and so have generations before me in my family.
Those horses are kept so unnaturally, heavy bits and tack that may not be the best fit for that particular horse and their use is purely decorative nowadays, not to mention the costs of keeping them all.

It's starting to decompose as soon as the animal is killed, even if its not gone off its still rotting, ew.
