To think moths are cheeky wee bastards that need to die?!

Trying to get rid of moths / larvae 🐛. They are eating my carpets, jumpers and some wool snoods. I hate them!

I don’t kill spiders or slaters but moths get squashed on sight and I have a spray can of something toxic.

I still can’t get rid of them though - any tips appreciated!

Carpet moths I kill but I try and save the big moths that flicker around the light bulbs. Get some really beautiful big moths that come out during the night especially in the summer. But back to the killing of carpet moths, moths balls are usually pretty effective.

Birdsongsinging · 06/05/2023 07:53

Yes I don’t kill the big ones that go round the lights.

Oh yes. If I see a small one in a bedroom I always know it’s been snacking on our clothes, the little gobshite.

We seem to have loads this year, old house with cellar where they appear. I have just bought moth traps and set them up last night.

Birdsongsinging · 06/05/2023 22:48

Yes, I think I need to set traps too.

Once upon a time, I was sitting outside chatting and a moth flew into my mouth, got STUCK to my tongue and it took many minutes to be able to spit it out, much longer to feel I'd spat out all the moth dust and I will never feel untainted again 😫

I now avoid all moths and people think I'm crazy to be phobic of them until I recount my tale of trauma 🤣

They're horrible, away with the lot of them!

OctopusComplex · 06/05/2023 22:55

Traps on the carpets. Put all your woollen things in plastic bags in the freezer for 48 hours.

Then napalm the house.

VestaTilley · 06/05/2023 22:57

Burn the house down.

Birdsongsinging · 08/05/2023 11:12

Oh heck it sounds like I need to go nuclear!

Carpet moths are absolute bastards and have the gall to leave a mucky mark on your wall if you squish them. We had loads last year.

vjg13 · 08/05/2023 21:36

My moth traps have been a dismal failure so far, not one moth trapped!

AnathemaPulsifer · 08/05/2023 21:47

Traps won’t get rid of them, they just catch some males to indicate that you have a problem. You need to move all the furniture room by room, powder and spray. It’s a pain but it works. Google for suppliers. And get a mask, the spray is noxious.

anniewaitsforthelasttime · 08/05/2023 21:59

I recommend the foggers/bug bombs to nuke them. There was another thread about this in the last couple of weeks. One suggestion (which totally freaks me out but on further reading is a real thing that does work) is to buy and introduce teeny parasitic wasps!! Google it 🙈.

CherryRipe1 · 08/05/2023 22:36

Diatomaceous earth the carpets, pheromones traps in every room. Vacuum daily. Electric bat to zap the clothes moths or spray diluted rubbing alcohol. They're horrible little bastards & wrecked lots of our clothes but we're winning.

Once the moth is out, the damage is done

LemonjeIIo · 08/05/2023 22:50

Has anyone tried the parasitoid wasps? It sounds like a brilliant idea

Mars27 · 08/05/2023 23:23

I used to have a big problem with them then I decide to go "nuclear" like OP said.

They like dark, warm and humid environments, so whatever you can do to disrupt that you're winning.
Leave wardrobe doors open as much as you can, preferably if the light hits the wardrobe. Hoover frequently. Shake clothes occasionally and wash them.
I've got an electric dehumidifier and also those dehumidifier pots inside the wardrobes.
They don't like the smell of lavender or citrus so I've got lavender sachets in the wardrobe and I put a few drops of lemon oil on cotton balls in each corner of each drawer.
I've bought cedar rings from Amazon, they seem to not like the smell of that either.

So yes, go nuclear or go bust with the pests.

I hate it when moths do fly by’s just to tell you they’re there and piss you off. They’re not even fast at it either.

KnottyKnitting · 08/05/2023 23:45

We had a real moth problem a few years ago- they ate a hole in one of our carpets and we kept seeing them in the evenings. We sprayed the carpet and also tracked another nest in the mechanism at the back of our sofa. Vacuumed the life out of the house including all the cupboards and the skirting birds . Also used some Moth traps under the sofa and in various places round the house. Seems to have done the trick as we haven't had a problem since although we did replace the carpet they had eaten!

BetiYeti · 08/05/2023 23:46

Get a carpet moth spray, then vacuum every day and follow up with spray. The spray stinks, so try and do it before you go out or at least try and clear the room for a bit. Get some of those sticky traps too. We get them every bloody year in our dining room and you’ve reminded me to get some spray.

Dillya · 09/05/2023 00:00

Can anyone recommend traps for the carpet moths? We’ve tried Indorex spray on the carpet but they’re still here!

CherryRipe1 · 09/05/2023 10:58

Also wool carpets and rugs are a 5* star holiday resort for moths which also makes me think wool loft insulation is another hidey hole for them.

Babymamamama · 09/05/2023 11:10

I think they like wool carpets particularly.
