To think moths are cheeky wee bastards that need to die?!

Trying to get rid of moths / larvae 🐛. They are eating my carpets, jumpers and some wool snoods. I hate them!

I don’t kill spiders or slaters but moths get squashed on sight and I have a spray can of something toxic.

I still can’t get rid of them though - any tips appreciated!

Bitey little fuckers ...we have tried lavender and cedar it doesn't seem to work. I don't want to use chemicals and as my carpets are already in a state I'm thinking they have to be replaced... will new carpets be ruined too if I don't napalm the house?

Ariela · 09/05/2023 12:25

I seem to have got rid of mine. Hoover like mad, then get the parasitic wasps and DON'T hoover till just before you get the next batch of wasps.

AnnesObstructiveFeather · 09/05/2023 12:29

Yes the clothes ones do. They’re out in force at the moment.

The sticky paper traps with pheromones from Amazon are good but they’re really only useful for monitoring infestation level numbers. The traps only attract the male ones so if they’ve bred before finding the traps the female ones will still lay eggs.

An insecticide is needed get rid of them properly unfortunately. The cassettes you hang in wardrobes from Pest Expert or Acana are good. There’s also sachet versions for drawers. Then there’s sprays for the carpets etc. Also smoke bomb fumigators as well but that sounds really hardcore I’ve never tried them!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 09/05/2023 12:36

We spray as often as we can - 2 or 3 times a year. Wool clothes are in vacuum bags. Sachets in wardrobes and drawers.

Unfortunately every sodding carpet but one is wool. Ultimately I think the only way to get rid of them will be to get rid of the carpets but we can't afford to replace them all.

The parasitic wasps, they 100% work and the National Trust use them too. I gave them a go last year after being plagued for a couple of years and haven't seen a bastardy one since!

(Although I probably shouldn't brag in case they all suddenly appear wearing party hats and sticking their tongues out!)

But how does that work? Do you have wasps flying around in your wardrobe?

Notmollybutdolly · 09/05/2023 14:29

Can I just ask what these small moths look like? Because I think they are in my house but they’ve not got the big wings like I thought they would.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/05/2023 14:39

They're a sort of goldeny colour.

Just reading about the parasitic wasps, fascinating! You can buy them in packets and they're tiny but lay their eggs in the moth eggs and kill them off.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/05/2023 14:46

Here's a fecker I caught earlier @Notmollybutdolly . Not the clearest pic, soz

Thank you those are the wee guys that I’m dealing with too. what is it they’re attracted to?

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/05/2023 15:08

That's the inside of a moth trap - it's sticky paper which attracts them

NooNakedJacuzziness · 09/05/2023 15:09

And wool carpets!

Orange1992 · 09/05/2023 15:11

I dont intentionally kill anything including moths. I try to capture them and put them outside where they belong. I say this as someone who has had their expensive clothes tore apart by moths.

GarlicGrace · 09/05/2023 15:35

I farm spiders in the attic 😂 I dislike 'em, but I hate insects even more. Reading this thread led me to consider I could be free of both, so I've just ordered some Deadly Chemicals. Mumsnet turned me into a killer!

Rarewaxwing · 09/05/2023 15:44

They're buggers! We have a moth infestation in our house at the moment ☹️. They're steadily munching their way through our wool carpets, but we dont have the money or energy to rip them all up and replace them. So we've decided to go for the parasitic wasp method.

And we're going to start putting our clothes in moth-proof bags.

Rarewaxwing · 09/05/2023 15:45

@Mars27 - the wasps are so tiny that they're virtually invisible to the naked eye.

AnnesObstructiveFeather · 09/05/2023 15:45

Here’s my current collection plague!

@OldTinHat - can I ask you which supplier of parasitic wasps you used? There are several listed online, including Amazon.

Really small, shiny, beige fuckers. When you whack them they disintegrate to dust. Nothing like the big winged, brown butterfly ones, they are fine.

So are they going to eat all my stuff

anniewaitsforthelasttime · 09/05/2023 16:54

@Notmollybutdolly they will have a go at any natural fibres. Wool carpets and clothing is their fave but also cotton/silk etc. do not ignore them. They are evil.

I have an irrational hatred of insects, especially the ones that fly. I put nets on my windows so I can leave them open during summer as I hate moths, flies and anything in between.

If they come into my house it's at their own peril as I'm going to kill them. Ditto spiders. I love killing the feckers 👍🏼

Rarewaxwing · 09/05/2023 21:27

@Mars27 - agree with you about insects. I also have nets on the windows. I use bug catchers to catch any insects that break through the no-go zone. It's also made me a lot braver about catching spiders.

Mars27 · 09/05/2023 13:59

Yes @Mars27 but they are sooooo small you can't actually see them! They're not 'wasp' wasps! They're tiny.

And I knew I'd regret posting earlier - I don't know if that was a moth that just flitted past me or a fly...off to investigate, close windows and order more wasps if necessary!!

I can't say I have a preferred supplier. I've just got them off Amazon as you say. I can't remember who but they definitely do the job.

You may need a card for each room. I just bought one at first because I was a bit scared of the idea but, when that worked, I bought a card for every room. Not cheap but worth every penny!

And, to follow up on my last post, I can confirm it was a small fly, not a moth!!
