To strongly dislike Amol Rajan as a presenter?

He’s now a presenter of Today on Radio 4. I can’t stand him. He doesn’t talk clearly, he mumbles all the time. He often seems ill-prepared for interviews and conducts them in such a casual manner which I suspect is his way of dealing with his nerves/lack of preparation. In TV interviews he slouches in his seat which just looks so unprofessional. Now he’s got the University Challenge gig. Why do people keep hiring him ? I wish he would just go away.

I don't mind him but I was totally laughing my head off at him this morning saying the Sudan evacuees were being taken to Larn-AR-car airport in Cyprus... asking his correspondent to say what it was like as the listeners wouldn't have been there
Apart from approx 400000000000 holidaymakers

He’s had a lot of unlikely gigs with the Beeb. I remember when he was a ‘restaurant critic’ on Masterchef Professionals, sitting there with Tracy and Jay….what was that about? Then wasn’t he an Arts and Media correspondent?

He is known as Mister Bling in our household.

bridgetreilly · 26/04/2023 09:20

I really like him.

Stickortwister · 26/04/2023 09:20

Disagree.
Ive started listening to the today programme now hes on it. I like the more relaxed style.

YANBU. The bbc has gone so downhill.

Neededanewuserhandle · 26/04/2023 09:26

YABU I love the sound of his voice and I don't think you should mistake his apparent casual style for being unprepared. His interview with Suella Braverman this morning was brilliant and really showed her up for the charlatan she is - he managed, without being discourteous, to illustrate clearly that she has no answers at all to any pertinent questions about her brief.

I do sympathise with not liking a particular presenter though - it's a very personal thing.

Wilkolampshade · 26/04/2023 09:27

Oh! I quite like him! Was unsure at first because of the massive difference in presentation style but really like his empathetic manner.
Can't bear Robinson.

WhoppingBigBackside · 26/04/2023 09:28

I'm not keen on him presenting the Today programme. Seems OK on The Media Show.

Plexie · 26/04/2023 09:29

I love Amol! Was so pleased when I heard him on his first day on the Today programme (I hadn't known he was joining).

I like his style but I agree that he doesn't always enunciate clearly and sometimes his tone of questioning rears dangerously into John Humphries' dismissive impatience territory. He needs to rein that in.

Willmafrockfit · 26/04/2023 09:31

oh i dont like him,
he is so down with the kids and issues
i watched his programme about elite kids but did wonder . i see he went to a state school but also Cambridge which he seemed so anti, unless it was me misunderstanding Confused
i am not looking forward to university challenge,
however i expect he will grow on me!

darjeelingrose · 26/04/2023 09:49

I think he is fine, but the BBC does have other presenters. He has become a bit ubiquitous, a bit like Martin Lewis. but Martin Lewis doing his money thing is completely different, because he is seen as a reference point, and it matters that it is him. Amol Rajan could be replaced by many equally as competent. I don't dislike him, at all, but I think he's on the screen/airwaves a bit much.

fruitpastille · 26/04/2023 09:59

I really like him and agree with pp that his style doesn't mean he is unprepared. I first heard him on radio 2 ages ago standing in for Jeremy Vine and found him a breath of fresh air. Pleased to hear him on Today and I like the way he interacts with guests on the show.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2023 10:01

I think he’s excellent on Today Programme. I don’t care who takes over on UC, anyone would be better than JP, who ought to have stepped down before now.

CurlewKate · 26/04/2023 10:04

I didn't realise he had the Today gig. I might pop back and see if it's more bearable now.

Abora · 26/04/2023 10:04

I don’t mind his style but I find his lack of enunciation means he is often difficult to understand. I find it great that the bbc now have a range of accents and not just RP, but the mumbling is unforgivable on the radio imo. Matters less on tv.

Thislife1 · 26/04/2023 10:09

I think he’s brilliant on the Today programme. A fantastic interviewer, very smart and a great voice. Might even start watching UC.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/04/2023 10:09

I like him.

Malaiseybum · 26/04/2023 10:18

I really like him. I think he's always well prepared, asks good questions, doesn't let people off the hook. Contrast to Evan Davis, who I LOATHE - I don't think he's ever asked an intelligent q in his life. Every time ED says "ya" I feel violently ill.

Davros · 26/04/2023 10:22

The Today programme is SO much better since it took a big dive in Lockdown. I think AR is part of that and I love Justin Webb

SlipperyLizard · 26/04/2023 10:26

I like him on the Today programme, he doesn’t let politicians get away with not answering the question! Yes, his style is different but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Agree with all this.

Willmafrockfit · 26/04/2023 10:45

i really like Evan Davies

Willmafrockfit · 26/04/2023 10:46

and Justin Webb, like him too,
my favourite is Tim Harford, More or Less presenter
