To strongly dislike Amol Rajan as a presenter?

He’s now a presenter of Today on Radio 4. I can’t stand him. He doesn’t talk clearly, he mumbles all the time. He often seems ill-prepared for interviews and conducts them in such a casual manner which I suspect is his way of dealing with his nerves/lack of preparation. In TV interviews he slouches in his seat which just looks so unprofessional. Now he’s got the University Challenge gig. Why do people keep hiring him ? I wish he would just go away.

@VimtoVimto yes, I used to find him very irritating but don't any longer - not sure if he's changed or I have!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/03/2024 06:26

@VimtoVimto me three.

samthebordercollie · 09/03/2024 11:19

He doesn't annoy me like he did at first, but I know my 89 year old dad finds it difficult to understand what he says as he doesn't have the ennunciation of the other presenters. I don't think he quite has what it takes to do the more serious and difficult interviews, at least not yet!

GirlySwot73 · 14/03/2024 08:58

Announcing the time as half past seven at half past 8. He just makes me scream!! 😖

Crispyturtle · 14/03/2024 09:42

I really like him. He’s covered for Jeremy Vine a few times and I thought he came across as very genuine and was really kind to the people who had called in.

hydriotaphia · 14/03/2024 09:49

I really like him - he comes across as really intelligent and I like that he has a more relaxed style while still nailing interviews. He's also quite handsome!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 14/03/2024 10:08

I've liked him ever since he was editor of "The i". Laid back but informed, IMO.

He doesn't IMO, and I don't find him handsome. I don't watch tv, so I go by his voice.

Mountainpika · 14/03/2024 10:22

Don't like his presentation on University Challenge. He gabbles so fast I can't hear at least half of what he says. Needs to slow down. A lot.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/03/2024 10:42

IMO he gabbles too much on UC.
I do miss Jeremy Paxman!

His diction is a bit better now. It seems, though, that he has invented a style where he gabbles speeds up part-way through the programme, presumably to try to inject a sense of urgency / jeopardy. The students also seem to have noticeably cottoned on to timing - speeding up or slowing down, as suits the team's need.
It is mildly irritating that the question is often answered before it has even been fully asked. But not half as irritating as Clive Myrie droning his way through a loooong question when it is obvious that the contestant knows the answer immediately but isn't allowed to jump in with their response and get on to the next question.

I think Amol is excellent, as the greatly increased scores suggest . It was a real struggle to understand some of what Paxo said in his final series.

CarrieHain · 14/03/2024 11:21

I've always used the sub-titles on UC, sometimes the applause drowns out the start of the next question. I like AR.

That’s what I used to love about Eddie Mair he was relaxed even as he went for the jugular.

CarrieHain · 14/03/2024 11:40

Eddie Mair: "you're a nasty piece of work aren't you Boris?"

Giovannimilanese · 14/03/2024 14:36

Totally agree, he’s smug and annoying

YachtMistress · 14/03/2024 15:55

Mr Mumble, aaaargh
Often important details and key points muffled.......why, oh, why.
BBC trying to pull in younger audience?

Pottedpalm · 14/03/2024 16:28

I don’t like him presenting University Challenge, he mumbles and spits the questions out too fast.
i also find him rather snug and self important; he presented a program about children from disadvantaged backgrounds and managed to make it all about himself.

On that last point, I couldn't disagree more. I thought that was an excellent programme and it was the thing that first made me warm to him as a presenter.

That's not Clive's fault though, it's built into the rules of the show and the producer's choices on question length. I agree it's annoying.

I know that it's not Clive's fault but it is still damned annoying. Just like the intro to UC is annoying: "here is the team from the University of Somewhere who scored really well in the last round on the life cycle of the natterjack toad and the films of King Vidor but struggled on trees of the Serengeti. Their average score is 195." Nobody cares!! I know that it must be something that the College Bowl Co demands but, please please please, can the BBC negotiate to drop it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/03/2024 21:44

The scores give you a sense of who the in form team is and the reminders of questions from earlier rounds jogs your memory of the team.

UC, like all spectator competitions is 50% quiz, 50% soap opera.
