Cons
quite small

OP posts:
Furrybutts · 17/04/2023 23:19

Pros
Nobody speaks to anyone.
It's a new build estate, so it all looks very smart.
It's considered quite a well to do area.
There is loads of parking available.
It's very quiet.
It's safe for children to play out in the street, due to the layout.
Lovely country park right nearby.

Cons
Nearest shop is 3 miles away.
Country roads all around so difficult to walk the dogs due to no footpath.
No local pub.
It's miles from my family.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 17/04/2023 23:20

Pros
Close to shops and the activities my children do out of school

Cons
People being stabbed appears to be a monthly activity

Imnotdrinkingmerlot · 17/04/2023 23:23

Pros
Lovely quiet road
Quite affluent so low crime rates
Pretty, lots of trees etc, close to countryside
Good Primary school

Cons
Bad traffic in one direction (which is where a lot of amenities are)
Nearest city is a bit grim, and nearest town is mediocre
Little choice of Secondary school and its very large
Grey weather very often!

MoonlightMedicine · 17/04/2023 23:24

Pros

Lots of trees
Wide roads
Quiet and no through traffic
Feels very safe

Cons

Closest shop is a 20 minute walk
Not many children for DC to play with
Barking dogs

DrMeredithGrey2023 · 17/04/2023 23:24

Pros

Walking distance to town
Walking distance to school
Lovely area with a stream to walk the dog minutes away from our front door
Small estate of only 42 houses so it's quite quiet

Cons

No corner shop near by to pop to if we run out of milk
The walking route to town/school includes some older streets, where pavements are very narrow. was a pain when I had to use buggy's etc, and I do worry about road safety when it comes to DC's being the age where they can walk themselves to school.
On top of a hill. So any walk/bike ride has to end on an uphill, which I hate.

Thighdentitycrisis · 17/04/2023 23:26

Pros - well located for supermarkets, restaurants, cultural activities, public transport.
Nice architecture
lots of green spaces
Diverse population

Cons - stupid high rents, child poverty, very wealthy and privileged families next deprived ones. Lack of social housing, overcrowding,

Londre · 17/04/2023 23:27

Pros:
Nice suburb of an affluent town
Has its own train station linking me to London
Has a supermarket, butcher, excellent pub and furniture shop on the local high street (10 minute walk)
Good schools
My neighbours are great and we have street parties for different occasions (the next one is for the Kings Coronation - I know some people might hate this but I really enjoy it)

Cons:
Its a small close so can’t be super discreet
The junction to get to the main road is super annoying to pull out from
My council seems to hate footpaths so it’s not well pedestrianized in a lot of places

Dithyramb · 17/04/2023 23:29

Close to city centre so I can walk to cinema/pub/theatre in five minutes, high up with a view of park and river, lots of trees, some nice 19thc architecture, no two houses the same, and some odd quirks like some enormous old houses only being accessible via fifty steps and with no off-road parking because the terrain is so steep.

Rat run in rush hour, steep, if short walk up from town, dealers and dogshit.

Floralnomad · 17/04/2023 23:31

PROS
low crime rate
close to nice walks ( 5 mins to a heath / green , 10 mins to a nature reserve )
close to outstanding primary / secondary schools ( if you need them )
Nice houses ( especially ours )
5 mins to Tesco , chemist , newsagent , dry cleaner , GP
30 minute drive to coast
40 minute drive to London
there are no cons it’s lovely

MyMachineAndMe · 17/04/2023 23:37
  • close to large towns and cities as well as being fairly rural
  • Good local primary and secondary schools Only one main road
  • Nice neighbours who are happy to pass the time of day if you want to but otherwise leave you alone
  • Cheap rent and council tax
  • Nice church
  • Some crime
  • Shit bus services
  • Industrial estate behind our estate which doesn't look very pretty and means there are a fair few trucks on the road
GrumpyInsomniac · 17/04/2023 23:41

Very small rural village here.

Pros:
Quiet except at touristy times of year
Northern so temperature stays bearable most of the year
Only a small population that are mostly friendly
Reasonable community spirit
Village store has both essentials and also a craft shop
3 pubs
Some public transport provision
Can’t go anywhere without seeing stunning views
Stream at the bottom of the garden that I can hear when I open the window
Fresh, clean air
Generally low crime rates
Excellent gluten-free fish and chips in most nearby towns

Cons:
Nearest big supermarket 17 miles away
Hard to get to know people our age as we moved here once DS was at secondary and therefore didn’t have the local primary social network
Few people with the same interests as us
Too many second homes going unoccupied for months on end so hard to buy a house here
Wheelchair access in the area is atrocious
Some parcel couriers seem incapable of locating houses within the village
No Ocado delivery, which is a 1st world problem I know, but with the food allergies and intolerances we have, we did most of our shopping with them before we moved up here and now have to either get deliveries from 2 supermarkets for the same range, or find time to top up in town.
No Deliveroo/Uber Eats etc, which mostly isn’t an issue, but there are some nights I really miss that convenience

I still wouldn’t move back to London, though. Quite happy to just visit occasionally for work.

Dweetfidilove · 17/04/2023 23:43

Pros
Very quiet
Beautiful trees all around
Lovely parks and nature trails
Low crime
No police sirens (lived somewhere where these were constant)
5 mins walk to train station
My neighbours beautifully kept gardens

Cons
Narrow country lane
God awful unpaved private roads to use when road is closed
Train to school takes 25mins whereas bus takes 50+mins, so expensive travel.
Nearest shop is Co-op. All others approximately 15mins drive

ChicagoBears · 17/04/2023 23:44

Pros

  • affluent area so low crime rates
  • everyone maintains their properties so the street always looks pretty
  • some lovely village shops (deli, butchers, local pub, post office)
  • neighbours are genuinely lovely
  • brilliant street parties
  • walking distance to outstanding primary school
  • 5 mins to a large retail park
  • 5 supermarkets within 5 mile radius
  • near areas of outstanding beauty

cons

  • expensive to maintain property (lawn care, gardening, painting etc.)
  • Rubbish bus route
thespy · 18/04/2023 00:02

Pros
Big gardens
Close to national park but still in a town
Nice views

Cons
No decent shops / cafes /pubs or restaurants within walking distance
It's next to one of the least desirable neighborhoods
Everyone gets cross with each other's massive building projects.

Cons

Cons
Limited parking, so sucks if we want to get a car in the future.

DilemmaDelilah · 18/04/2023 03:22

Pros:
Surrounded by trees and wildlife
nice neighbours
our own parking spaces
very very quiet
private drive, only shared by next door neighbours
shop just down the road
bus stop close by

Cons:
On a housing estate
Lovely drive, but to get to it you have to drive round the backs of other peoples houses and their dustbins, nobody takes responsibility for keeping it tidy (except us, for a little bit near the entrance to the drive)
Council estate very close (doesn't bother me but affects property value unfortunately)
relatively high amount of petty crime in the wider area (Not a high crime city)
On the 'cheap' side of town
bus service unreliable
junior school just a bit too far to walk to and up a very steep hill
People can't find us (could also be a pro 😁)
garden too steep for young children to play

for us, the Pros far outweigh the cons.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 18/04/2023 04:31

Pros: Mountains and forest

Cons: grizzly and brown bears and cougars and wolves. And enough mosquitos to eat all of them.

Riapia · 18/04/2023 05:08

Pro
It isn’t Norfolk. 🙂

Con
It’s Lincolnshire. ☹️

SuperGinger · 18/04/2023 05:25

Pros classified as inner London, very good amenities less than 5 minutes walk away, you can get a good croissant less than 2 minutes away, plus there is a park 2 minutes walk away and a bus one minute from the house. It is quiet despite having everything so close. Neighbours are kind. We have wonderful bird life.

Cons, our garden is a bit small and it's a gritty and urban and parking can be difficult.

WaitingfortheTardis · 18/04/2023 05:48

Pros
Lovely countryside, lots of animals and trees
Lovely fresh air
Clean sky so you can often see amazing stars
Small but friendly
Low crime
Big gardens

Cons
Hilly
Looked down upon as not particularly affluent
Conservative MP

Lonecatwithkitten · 18/04/2023 06:13

Pros: only two neighbours, rural beautiful big sky views.
Major road only 5mins away so easy to get anywhere else. Waitrose, budgets and Sainsbury's local stores all within 10 mins.
Cons: manual gate to keep our beasts in and other beasts out.

thisisasurvivor · 18/04/2023 06:18

Pros
Very quiet
No immediate neighbours
Our own lane off the road
Beautiful views
Lovely sunsets
Three acres for the dogs and cats to explore

Cons
Not too many ....
In the distance there is a small wind farm which is surprisingly noisy
Can get windy in the winter

After years of sleeping on a floor in London I feel very lucky to be fair

Nounoufgs · 18/04/2023 07:10

pros

Area of stunning natural beauty
close to shops/centre
great transport
lots of green spaces
