Pros
Close to the town centre

Cons

OP posts:
missfliss · 18/04/2023 07:24

I live in a green leafy 1960s suburb of a very old town

Pros
10 minute walk to town centre with pavement cafes and independent shops
5 mins walk to river with Downs views
15 minutes walk to swimming beach / nature reserve
20 mins walk / 5 mins drive to south downs National park
10 mins on train to nearest city
1h 20 mins on train to London

Cons
Expensive
Not enough secondary schools
Tory MP
Traffic along coast road
Encroaching overdevelopment without amenities to support new homes
Ugly approach from one direction ( industrial port)

CoffeeWithCheese · 18/04/2023 07:24

Cons
On a somewhat busy road
Still slightly hit by hs2 route uncertainty (it’s not going ahead now but something may happen here in its place)
Very near an outstanding primary with associated traffic
Nearest secondary is meh

Pros
Beautiful Victorian architecture and big houses
Green space - including nature reserves
Walkable to town in 10 mins
Transport links - bus service and onto motorway in under 10 mins
Does the job for us within our budget
Gardens are huge

MintJulia · 18/04/2023 07:28

Pros
Quiet,
rural, with lots of wildlife
nice neighbours
no crime,
plenty of space
fabulous scenery
clean air

Cons
ds' school is 20 miles away
school bus stop is 7 miles
closest pub is 2 mile walk (but nice for Sunday lunch)

@WaitingfortheTardis your constituency sounds like ours. Our area is 'looked down on' for no reason that I can find, and I've lived here 12 years. Odd, isn't it 🤔

Seymour5 · 18/04/2023 07:40

Pros
city suburb with its own big centre
lots of shops, GP, library, park in walking distance
20 minutes to city, two theatres, cinemas, major hospitals
several supermarkets within 10 minute drive
quiet neighbours who keep their small front gardens neat and take their bins in
properties sell quickly, reasonable prices

Cons
Idiot drivers who don’t stick to the 20 mph limits
tagging round the centre, proper graffiti is different
very hilly
Big reduction in bus services
local school hasn’t a great rep

Seymour5 · 18/04/2023 07:41

And another big pro, ten minute drive to beautiful, open countryside.

BlueKaftan · 18/04/2023 07:53

Pros
Its a University city
Affluent neighbourhood with good diversity
can walk everywhere including to work
Lovely neighbourhood cafe

Cons
Traffic congestion
Summer tourism
English weather

Smoky1107 · 18/04/2023 07:56

Pros

Quiet village location surrounded by fields
Ten minute drive either way to major A roads or motorways
Train line well connected to London and the coast
Good pubs
Good schools
Short drive to a major shopping centre

Cons

Poorly served by buses
If the motorway is blocked people use the village as a cut through
Not much for teens to do

PayNoAttentionToTheNastyLady · 18/04/2023 07:58

Quiet street
nice views
No horrible kids or dogs
parking
corner shop 5 minutes away
a decent local pub
main shops, leisure centre, GP, dentist, etc, 1/2 a mile away

On a hill (not a problem at the moment but would be if I hadn't got a car)

CeeJay81 · 18/04/2023 08:04

Pros
Great sense of community. Everyone's speaks to each other
Beautiful Scenery, rural countryside.
Has a good amount of amenities for a small community.
Very Safe

cons
Very remote
Having to travel far for a lot of things(18 miles to the nearest hospital).
Not much to do for older children without lots of travelling.
Public transport is every 1 to 2 hours.

CleaningOutMyCloset · 18/04/2023 08:11

Pros
Good school
Village location
Close to A1
Close to a train station
Lovely neighbours

Cons
10 miles from nearest food superstore

Roads are full of pot holes

Ersorrywhatnow · 18/04/2023 08:11

pros
Very friendly community, helpful neighbours
school right here
feels very safe, children play out and go to parks by themselves
parks have football pitches, tennis courts, running track, cricket and baseball pitches
community hall that holds lots of events
Great local shop, couple of family friendly pubs, big selection of shops - from independent bakery to Co-op,hardware shop, deli, hairdressers, gift shops, cafes etc
nestled inbetween 2 big parks
city centre is a 10 minute walk, beach is a 10 min walk, country side is a few mins drive away

cons - no gardens, most people just have a small terraced garden but as parks are so close that’s not such a big deal

AliceTheeCamel · 18/04/2023 08:16

Pros:
Very beautiful village and surroundings
Quiet

Pretty friendly
Strong sense of community

Cons:
Remote - no shops on walking distance

Grammar school area with heavily tutored kids - not a system I particularly agree with

ordinarybloke · 18/04/2023 09:19

Here in the Netherlands;

Pros

friendly, considerate and helpful neighbours
Evening shop 2 minutes walk away
Local shopping areas 8 , 12 and 14 minutes walk away
Bike/repair shop 5 minutes walk away
Beach 15 minute bike/bus ride away
City centre (with loads of restaurants/museums/shops) 25 minute bike ride or 20 minute tram ride away
Good public transport links

Cons

One neighbour who has let her garden go to rack and ruin with her Ivy creeping into my garden

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 18/04/2023 09:23

Pros

Low crime rate
Cheap housing
Near the coast
Low traffic
Great views and scenery
Dog friendly
Everyone is friendly

Cons

Very few amenities
Little/no public transport
Everyone knows everyone
Can feel very isolated in winter

OldTinHat · 18/04/2023 09:30

Pros
Two minute walk to centre of county town.
A conservation area.
Fabulous neighbours.
Character terraces.
Quiet.
Bizarre amount of wild birds.
Peaceful.
Parks, shops, supermarkets, hospital all close by (no GP but that's another story!).
Ancient castle a mile a way.

Cons
No fucking parking!!! I have a disabled bay and still I can't park because twats without badges think they can park there for a week because they're on holiday and are staying in a local hotel that has no parking.
It's a tourist location, I love seeing the population quadruple and more over the holidays - but I still can't fucking park my bloody car with my feckity blue badge! 🙄

Newusername21 · 18/04/2023 09:37

Small semi rural town in South West

Pros
Low crime - I've always walked home alone at night and felt completely safe
Good Sense of community (most people know each other)
Close to beautiful countryside
Easy commuting distance via motorway network to major cities - ie lots of employment opportunities
Most households are fairly affluent
Good local schools
Within walking distance of pubs, small supermarket and general shops - also GP's surgery within walking distance.

Cons
Most people know each other
Most households are fairly affluent (which brings a certain blinkered outlook)
Housing is incredibly expensive (it will be decades before my kids can afford to live here independently)
Public transport is patchy (teens cannot get about very easily on their own - and their friends can't get to us)

dimpleton · 18/04/2023 09:43

Pros:
Walking distance to small town with pubs/a few shops/big supermarket
Within a short walk I can be in open countryside/canal side for dog walking
We have a good choice of cafes and some nice farm shops locally
I know loads of people here as I've lived here forever, so if I walk down town I'll see people to say hello/have a chat to which is nice.
In the little road I live in most people are around my age group, and I'm friends with several of them. Handy if I need to borrow a stock cube 😂
It's conveniently located to access different parts of the country.

Cons:
People tend to know other people's business so you couldn't make a tit out of yourself without everyone knowing within half an hour (a local couple uploaded some content to a porn site and the whole town knew about it within the hour)
It's not near enough to the coast, and I love the sea
The town centre shops are closing one by one and parts of town are looking fairly run down.
We have lad racers who zoom around town in their cars late at night
There's quite a lot of feral youths who partake in antisocial behaviours that don't get dealt with due to lack of policing

dimpleton · 18/04/2023 09:44

Oh, and another con is our bus service is shit!

Hotvimto3 · 18/04/2023 09:48

Pros
Lovely friendly people in the main
Village nearby with bank/market/post office
Lots of green space
Safe
2 train stations.. local and national
Nearby schools
Nearby supermarkets
2 big parks very close
Beach 10 minute drive

Cons
Getting a bit hipster/yummy mummy in last few years and prices of property rocketed if you can even get something.
No decent child friendly restaurants/pubs
Seen a change in my youngest school kids/mums not friendly/stuck up/looking down on dare I say 'locals'. Oldest group of mums amazingly supportive and all still friends. We all helped each other in covid.

BeachHat · 18/04/2023 10:02

Pros
It’s quiet
Good nursery 5 mins walk away
Beach 5 mins walk away, lots of amenities within 10 mins walk inc shops, pubs & cafes
Lovely scenery & easy to get to local beauty spots
Pretty houses with lots of character

Cons
Passing dog walkers walking to the beach, often let their dogs shit on the pavements and around the trees - nice 👍🏼
Not considered an affluent area, so house prices reflect that, despite the houses being rather beautiful. Affluent neighbourhood is about 15 mins walk away and smaller houses go for double ££ & more.
Small gardens

maddy68 · 18/04/2023 10:23

Good Primary, Secondary and College within walking distance (majority of catchment is buses from other villages)

More for mine
