Do you believe dreams mean anything? Constantly dreaming about filthy toilets

As the title says, do you believe in dreams meaning something? Yet again I have just woken from a very vivid dream about a whole toilet block being not just blocked but absolutely covered in shit, walls, the loos, the floor covered in runny shit, absolutely stinking so strong that you feel like you've inhaled the smell. Now I've woken up from it I have an awful taste in my mouth & had to brush my teeth & feel like I can smell the stuff. In the beginning this dream was taking place in the toilet block in my old infants school of 50 years ago, now it's anywhere.
Tonight just before the filthy toilets scene I was defending a lady who I worked with from her abusive husband (she never even had an abusive husband to my knowledge) I actually went outside & started to physically fight him then we ended up snogging! Maybe I read mumsnet too much 😅 wish I could stop the shitted up loos bit from reoccurring though. Now I'm wide awake, hence my posting at 215am

Lol sometimes I dream I’m on the toilet somewhere but it’s public and everyone can see me 🙈 also dream that my teeth are falling out

Folicky · 17/04/2023 02:24

I do think dreams mean something and the shit and the fact that it refers to a certain period of your life is interesting, but I'm not trained or qualified to interpret them. A psychoanalytic psychotherapist or psychoanalyst would be though. I guess a question then is, apart from unpleasant dreams, how are you feeling generally? If okay then that might be too much I guess

halesie · 17/04/2023 02:29

OP I dream of dirty or non-existent loos too - usually when I need to pee... so for me the meaning is pretty clear Grin

edenhills · 17/04/2023 02:34

Yes usually toilet dreams mean you need to pee. The toilets are too filthy for you to use because your brain is making sure you don't wet the bed!

ALongHardWinter · 17/04/2023 02:36

I can totally relate to your dream OP. I have a very similar recurring one (probably about once every 7 or 8 weeks) that I'm in some large building, like a school or an office block and I'm desperate for a wee,but every toilet I find is absolutely filthy. I mean absolutely gross, with shit piled up in the toilet bowls, filth running down the walls, used toilet paper littered around and mess all over the floor. And the smell is so bad,I wake up gagging. Like you,I think it has something to do with the disgusting state of the toilet block when I was at infant school, back in the late 60s/early 70s. I used to absolutely hate having to use them. I have got no idea why I keep dreaming about it though! Incidentally, whenever I have this dream,I always wake up busting for a wee!

Valerie65 · 17/04/2023 02:42

@ALongHardWinter yes that's exactly it! I did need to go this time when I woke up, bit not desperate. Can't remember the toilets being particularly bad at school, apart from the tracing paper toilet paper lol. Just wish it wasn't so vivid that I end up waking up gagging & thinking I can taste & smell the stuff 🤮

Well, to quote from https://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/t2.htm:

To see a toilet in your dream symbolizes a release of emotions. You need to get rid of something in your life that is useless. If you are cleaning the toilet, then it means that you are starting to shed your outer wall or lose your inhibitions. To see a clogged toilet in your dream suggests that you are holding and keeping your feelings to yourself. Your emotions have been pent up too long and you need to let go of the negative feelings. To see an overflowing or flooded toilet in your dream denotes your desires to fully express your emotions. Dreaming about a flood with mud and/or garbage spilling out of the toilet indicates that your feelings are repeatedly being belittled, undermined or unacknowledged. You feel disrespected.

That source also notes that it might be a purely physical reaction: you need the toilet.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/04/2023 03:11

It’s really interesting how common certain dream themes are, I’d love to understand more about why

I often have dreams of trying to find a toilet but all the ones I can find are unusable - for me this is usually because they lack privacy (eg cubicles with no doors) but sometimes because they are dirty/flooded. I always thought this had something to do with anxiety/being self conscious rather than a very literal thing about needing the loo!

When my children were younger I would have a dream where I was somewhere away from home and realise I’d left the children at home on their own and the rest of the dream would be me panicking and trying to get home but being thwarted. That seems obviously about anxieties around responsibility of parenting.

I used to have teeth falling out dreams regularly but these have stopped, no idea why.

I often have dreams I live in a house where I discover rooms or an entire wing I didn’t know I had. Sometimes the rooms I discover are wonderful, sometimes they are a wreck.

GrumpyPanda · 17/04/2023 03:21

No idea about your dream, but it sounds like you woke up from reflux. Any point looking unto your stomach acids? Also, does this usually accompany your dreams?

IamSuperTired · 17/04/2023 03:31

I used to get this dream a lot OP! No idea what it means :)

nzeire · 17/04/2023 04:43

Here you go: What dreams about dirty toilets mean is in the link attached. There are various interpretations depending on the type of dirty toilet dreams you are having

Badleg85 · 17/04/2023 06:48

During stressful points in my life I have the very common reoccurring dream where my teeth fall out.

I also have one where I'm in my grandmother's old home (which was huge) but off the utility room there is an extra doorway (which didn't exist in RL) which leads to an old tattered corridor with other rooms, mostly I start getting scared and don't go into the rooms out of fear. I've not looked this dream up yet

Oysterbabe · 17/04/2023 06:51

Does your husband fart a lot in his sleep?

when I lived in my old house I used to dream all the time that I found a hidden wing/rooms. Weirdly in my new house I’ve not Dhal the same dream. Both houses are about the same size and have plenty of space for us.

Natsku · 17/04/2023 06:57

Usually when I dream about toilets its because I need a wee.

Last night I dreamt I shut myself in a washing machine that was running, god knows what that meant but I woke up in such a panic.

^^This is exactly what I came here to say. It happened to me the other night, I woke up desperate for a wee and thought 'Thank goodness the dream toilet was minging , or would have peed the bed.'

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/04/2023 07:02

I have all sorts of odd dreams about not being able to use a loo, pretty much every night. It's definitely because I need to go, in my case.

If you had a bad taste in your mouth when you woke up, I'd say that's what made your brain throw in the bad smell.

Exactly this. My version is usually not that the toilets are filthy, but they all have something wrong with them. The cubicles don't have doors on them, or the toilet itself has been taken out or broken.

TroysMammy · 17/04/2023 07:06

My partner is convinced that if you dream of poo you must buy a lottery ticket as it means you are going to win money. It might work for him but frankly I think he's talking shit.

Scalottia · 17/04/2023 07:07

I've had these dreams too OP! It's foul! 🤮

Allthecatsandcosyblankets · 17/04/2023 07:12

I've dreamt this overflowing/disgusting toilet dream so many times! Also dreamt I'm trying to use a public toilet and then realise the door/walls aren't covering me and people can see me.

It's a common dream (there was a dream thread on here and alot of people had the same dream) I personally think its a stress dream, like dreaming teeth are falling out.

I also dream I've discovered a whole section of my house with hidden rooms/bathrooms and there are always antique looking and ik ecstatic that my house is now enormous 😆

AndAllOurYesterdays · 17/04/2023 07:13

I get dreams of filthy, unusable toilets. And it means I'm desperate for a wee.

IrritableVowel · 17/04/2023 07:18

Same as PP

I have dreams about dirty toilets and wake up bursting.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/04/2023 07:46

Interesting if it is our brains way of stopping us from weeing in our sleep!

On a similar theme, I often have dreams where I am trying to run (often away from something) and I can only move incredibly slowly, like I am stuck in treacle. I’m told this is a brain response to stop us flaying around while we’re asleep. Like one part of our brain saying “run!!” and another part is saying “no, actually don’t, you’re asleep”, and it comes out in your dream like you’re running through treacle.
