Dogs in shops

ginforall · 10/04/2023 14:23

I have been to an out of town designer outlet place today where it would appear they are dog friendly and dogs are allowed in the clothes and shoe shops. Surely a trip to the shops is not a place to take your dog? We were in a small clothes shop which is already a bit on the tight side, the three dogs in there did not make it any easier to get around. AIBU to think clothes shops should be dog free zones?

The thing that makes me laugh when people complain about kids in trolleys & now dogs because it's not hygienic, clearly have absolutely no clue about rats, foxes & other wildlife sleeping in ,peeing on the trolleys over night & seem to think trolleys are the epitome of hygiene!

And they seem to think their food has been stored and transported in sterile conditions. 😬

And? They’re allowed in John Lewis.

Clearly! I'd just prefer not to have dogs walking around inside shops to be honest! Surely the topic of this thread?

I didn’t understand the point of your post. You saw a dog in a place a dog is allowed. Not really news is it?

GizzardChops · 10/04/2023 17:04

I have learnt something from this thread though. I didn't realise John Lewis allowed dogs!

😂

My animals are part of my family. You don’t get to tell people that they’re not I’m afraid.

Oh I do, because it isn’t.

I wonder if you were at the same outlet as us op as my husband and I have just had this same conversation. You had to queue to get in some shops because it was so busy yet some space was taken up by dogs 🙄

It's conversation... A thread about people's opinions about dogs in shops. I point out that I saw a dog in John Lewis recently. A large well known brand allowing dogs in their stores. Maybe not news but relevant to the topic surely? I haven't seen dogs in there before (other than guide dogs.)

That’s the problem with dog owners today and exactly why there are so many badly behaved and dangerous dogs, because people are pretending they are “part of the family” and not treating them as the animals they are
What does this actually mean? If we were treating all pets as animals in the feral sense, none would even be pets. No birds in cages, no cats insides, no bunnies, etc ...

Animals have been domesticated for donkey years. That means that although still animals, they fit within a family environment, and what this means has evolved with time.

There is a difference between domesticated and pretending it is part of your family.

Things like taking them everywhere with you, allowing them to sleep in beds, get on sofas, go up to people, eat food from the table, thinking they’re your “fur babies” etc etc.

These animals are not appropriately treated or properly trained.

Who the hell do you think you are to judge?

TooOldForThisNonsense · 10/04/2023 16:37

YANBU I don’t know why people have to take their bloody dogs everywhere these days.

Because (most) people with dogs love them and consider them members of the family in some way? Also some dogs struggle being left at home alone. And really if you get a dog/s and never take it anywhere with you, what's the point of having him/her/them?
Just because you don't know why doesn't mean those people are wrong.

Nope, you definitely don’t get to stop anyone referring to their animals as family. Despite you trying to, I shall still do it. 😉

Of course you will. That’s exactly what I mean 🤦‍♀️

I could call the sky green. It isn’t, and I would be wrong, but I can still do it.

Just like you can pretend your animal is part of your family and say it is, but you’d still be wrong 🤷‍♀️

luckystarg · 10/04/2023 17:11

Bicester or Freeport? We take our dogs to both. If I’m honest, I partly do it because of how much it pisses people off.

Nope. Family is those I choose to be and love.

But the two aren't mutually exclusive, surely?

You can consider your dog a member of the family and still be a responsible dog owner who treats the dog like an animal.

Our boy is very much a beloved member of the family. But we also know he's a dog and treat him accordingly.

I don't get the black and white thinking.

Although I would agree that there are a LOT of irresponsible dog owners out there who don't have a clue, don't train their dogs, don't pick up after them, etc. But I don't think considering a dog a family member is a key marker for that (or it doesn't have to be).

AlwaysGinPlease · 10/04/2023 17:15

Oh yet another Dogs shouldn't [insert nonsense here] thread. Fucking boring.

We went to a craft fair yesterday. Quite a high footfall with around 100 stalls in a big mill. 2 thirds of the customers there must have had at !east one dog with them and I didn't see one that was well behaved. They were all pulling on their leads to get to each other, nearly tripping people up and Pissing on the stall holders table covers and stock that wasnt high up. I was talking to one of the stall holders who said that the one time they banned dogs from this monthly event, there were hardly any customers and they all lost money.

I went to something similar. All quite well behaved dogs though.

But I didn't say people were expecting the world to adapt.

I'm saying the world has adapted because it often makes business sense to allow dogs - just as it makes business sense for restaurants to have a children's menu, customer toilets and free parking.

Businesses are there to make money, so if they see that they're missing out on sales because people are waiting outside with their dogs, it makes sense for them to let dogs in.

Equally if you don't like dogs, feel free to vote with your feet and go to some the many places that don't allow them in.

THIS! ^^^
I've not noticed dogs in shops, apart from Guide Dogs, and Guide Dog "puppies in training" - or maybe I'm just not very observant.
But I have noticed more amd more cafes, bistros, pub/pub restaurants, etc, allowing dogs in, and some do advertise that they are "dog friendly".
I have no intention of believing that these establishments love dogs, but have made a purely commercial decision.
It is obvious, as @coffeecupsandwaxmelts says, that it makes excellent business sense.

You are comparing a fact with a subjective opinion. Your logic is flawed.
To me, my dog is part of my family. You don't agree. That doesn't make my opinion less valid. I think you're an idiot. You probably don't agree.

My dogs are family.

Ontopofthesunset · 10/04/2023 17:23

What about other pets in shops then? Maybe cats or horses? I guess horses are a bit big, but then some dogs are quite large too. There is someone near here with a pet pig, so I guess that would be ok in a shop too.

Honestly, I don't much like dogs in shops as they are easy to trip over but I'm not that bothered. I don't much care about dogs except when they jump on me or run in front of me out of control on the towpath. What I do object too is dog owners who don't seem to understand that not everyone loves their dog, or indeed any dog. It's not a moral failing not to like dogs much. You're not a better person than me because you love dogs and I don't want an animal living in my house.

I didn't expect everyone to like my children either when they were small, before someone once again suggests a false equivalence between children and dogs.

I imagine being dragged round shopping malls pisses dogs off as well.
What a miserable life.

A lady who lives near me has a Savannah cat - she walks it on a lead and takes it everywhere that dogs are allowed to go. She brought into the shop I worked in once and I asked to stroke it - it's very friendly and called Bagheera Grin

Yeah, because if you take your dog shopping, it's obviously illegal to take them out on proper walks as well Hmm

My dog loves a shop - especially if there are biscuits and cuddles on offer!
