Dogs in shops

ginforall · 10/04/2023 14:23

I have been to an out of town designer outlet place today where it would appear they are dog friendly and dogs are allowed in the clothes and shoe shops. Surely a trip to the shops is not a place to take your dog? We were in a small clothes shop which is already a bit on the tight side, the three dogs in there did not make it any easier to get around. AIBU to think clothes shops should be dog free zones?

The problem with the dogs are my family argument in general is that whilst it could mean:

  • I consider my dogs part of the family so I will make the required adaptations to my life so that I can be a responsible dog owner. I accept that by choosing to have a dog, I need to make sure I factor the dog(s) into my plans and accept that means not doing some things if it doesn't work. Nobody else is obligated to want my dog present at every part of their life unless they specifically choose to find somewhere that doesn't include dogs

But in reality what those owners often mean is:

  • my dog is my family so everyone else should be subjected to my dog, and my dog needs to have access to 90% of the places I want to do, and has to attend every social occasion, and come shopping with me, and come for lunch. My dog is better behaved than some children. I'd rather have a dog in a cafe with me than someone's badly behaved brats. My Fido is much less disruptive than children shrieking. If you'd accept children places, you should accept dogs because I'm a doggy mama/daddy and I love them lots.

Well don't read it then 🙄

Did you complain to the shop? Any good advice on one of these similar threads?

Went into a cafe which is very much on the small side.
It has a few chairs and a couple of smallish sofas which often get shared by customers due to the small size of the cafe.
I sat on one end of the sofa enjoying my coffee and guy comes in with a dog and he lets the dog sit on the sofa in between us.
I promptly left as I can have a minor reactions to dog hair.

I've walked out of cafe's that allow dogs in many a time , sometimes making a comment to the person serving behind the counter .

Eating places are not places where dogs should be allowed in as far as i'm concerned .

For me, it means they’re loved and are a big part of the decisions I make. I take them to places they are happy to go and where they are welcomed by the people in charge of that place/event, which includes our local pubs, shops, cafes and social events. I like dogs and children, not just my own. 😊

My dog sleeps in the kitchen.
Dog friendly cafés etc don't let them in the prep area

ginforall · 10/04/2023 17:43

I didn't complain, as I'm fully aware it may just be a problem that I have and that most people are fine with it. It's why I started the thread really to see how others felt about it. I can see that its quite mixed. I'm not against dogs, just found it a bit surprising to see so many in small clothes shops today. They did make navigating the shop a bit tricky.

I probably should have done a search earlier for other similar threads, will take a look a some you have suggested.

I've stopped shopping at the outlet place near me as it seems to be a bit of a 'thing' to be seen with a dog there, like they are a fashion accessory.
Same with a couple of pubs and cafes that used to be lovely but now full of drippy dog owners.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 10/04/2023 17:46

Nope they shouldn't be in shops or cafes or pubs !

slowquickstep · 10/04/2023 17:47

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/04/2023 16:55

But it's not up to you.

If business owners want to allow dogs, that's entirely up to them.

Very true but no matter if they are your furrywurrybaby they are animals not children

LolaSmiles · 10/04/2023 17:57

I also love my dogs and they're part of the family.
I'd not expect to take them shopping though, and would suspect a lot of the people who think their dog(s) need to go round the shops for an afternoon and come in the changing rooms have small dogs, and in my experience the my furbaby type owners have smaller dogs and treat them like children as opposed to well loved pets.

I'd probably think a country pub to be dog-friendly (and would check before calling in after a walk) but not most town centre cafes. I'd certainly not expect most venues to be dog friendly the way fur baby obsessives do because most people have chosen not to own a dog.

WeHaveJoy · 10/04/2023 18:02

It's unsanitary and gross. I complain every time. I suggest you do too.

ThereIbledit · 10/04/2023 18:02

YANBU I saw someone with a dog in their Morrisson's trolley yesterday. Imagine that bum that's pooed sitting where someone will put their food shopping. Horrendous.

TBF babies in trollies sitting in their soiled nappy would be a much more likely health hazard - and as for the trolley handles, just think about the gross amount of people who simply don't wash their hands after adjusting downstairs, picking their nose or using the loo...

(I don't think dogs belong in clothes shops FWIW)

Well it is up to you what levels of hygiene you want in your own home.

Many of us have high standards, and expect a food establishment to not permit dogs.

Out of interest, why do you think it's more unsanitary to have dogs somewhere public than the general public? SO many people don't observe even basic hand hygiene, and are just generally gross. I think hygiene in an eatery is far more dependent on the level of cleanliness (do the staff properly wipe down tables and seats, for example) than whether Rover came to tea.

I can understand the ick of the thought of dogs pushing past clothes in a clothing shop leaving whatever they have rolled in and loose hair, (I'm not pro-dogs in these spaces) but in all honestly I don't think dogs are any more gross than toddlers and many people!

I noticed a dog in TK maxx this weekend and it struck me as odd. My daughter is terrified, it’s bad enough having to manage her in parks and places where I legitimately expect to see dogs, having to do this in the shops too is a pain and entirely unnecessary.

So did I! In the red trolley.
I complained to the staff, and they sent them on their way.

summerfinn · 10/04/2023 18:16

There's a certain second hand designer handbag store near where I live and the owner has her old dog that does not have control of its bodily functions anymore in the shop everyday. I just think if I'm gonna fork out thousands on designer handbag i don't want to purchase from a shop where a dog has full reign. Also the shop stinks of dog. 🤮🤢

They eat shit, they lick their fur, then they rub up against things. They have exposed anuses that touch stuff. They should not be in trolleys. They should not be touching anything I want to buy.

Dog shit can cause blindness.
Toddler bogies do not.

Dogs slobber. They stink. I don't want them touching me, or supermarket produce.

Toddlers wear nappies. Shit gets contained. Dog shits wherever it likes. Including in shopping malls.

dogs are normally cleaner and better behaved than most children. rather have dogs in a designer shop than someones screaming snotty child

No kid I have ever known enjoys rolling in fox shit. Doesn't lick their own anus. Doesn't ram their nose in a dog's ass. Doesn't sniff the damp lamppost.

I love dogs however someone in my family is highly allergic to dogs and can have a bad asthma attack and be very ill for a couple of days afterwards if he is in the vicinity of many breeds of dogs. Even if the dog is no longer in the room.
What triggers the asthma can linger.
Sadly having dogs being allowed in many places nowadays does restrict where we can now go. If restaurants had areas with no- dog areas that would help so much.
I also have been attacked and jumped at by dogs when I am out walking which can start off my sciatica. This is extremely painful.
It sometimes feels that dogs have more rights than us.

Our TK Max allows dogs but only if they’re carried, which ours are happy to be. They end up getting loads of fuss as more people notice them as they’re up higher.

We went sofa shopping at DFS a while ago and they allow dogs on the sofas and give them treats.
