Ripped ENTIRE toenail off

As title says

Feel sick, can't look at it properly yet!

What do now?

OP posts:
WolfFoxHare · 10/04/2023 08:36

Is it a big toe or one of the smaller ones? If it’s just a little toenail, I’d keep it clean and put savlon on it, it should be fine. I’ve lost my little toenail a couple of times and it just grows back.

lucya66 · 10/04/2023 08:42

I’ve lost two big toe nails before running.

they grow back fully in about a year.

salt water and keep clean. Skin under nail will harden in a couple of weeks.

thegrain · 10/04/2023 08:44

Take the toenail off - its not going to reattach. Use padded plasters for a bit to protect toe

stayathomer · 10/04/2023 08:47

I had an infection on my toenail once and when in with the doctor for something else I showed them and they said it was fine it was growing out, then it started peeling and finally halfway down fell off. I agreed just some form of an antiseptic and a huge plaster and change regularly and it will honestly start growing back it just takes time. If you're really worried go into a pharmacy

DiscoBeat · 10/04/2023 08:52

Meaning this kindly: no photo please! Chiropodist!

Is the hamster ok?

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 09:05

@DiscoBeat
No pic as I'm finding it hard to look at!

Hamster is fine, was looking at me like 🤷‍♀️

Ripped my thumb nail off, started getting infected so I soaked in antibacterial hand soap and water 15 minutes, 3 times a day. Got rid of infection and grew back fully

notacooldad · 10/04/2023 09:13

Make your entire family look at it.

Tell everyone about it.

wait till it grows back.

that’s what I did. Hth
That's what I do.
My next to little toe nail came off a few weeks ago. Annoyingly I had only just had gel nails that week. I'm getting a polymer nail done this week so my toe nails can be painted again.

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 09:13

New issue- shoes 🙈
I have massive feet as it is, so I own no loose fitting shoes as its hard enough finding ones that fit normally.

Am I going to be wandering around in flip flops today? 🙈

OP posts:
LaviniasBigBloomers · 10/04/2023 09:17

Today - definitely flip flops. You want the skin underneath to dry out a bit so take off whatever dressing you've got on and let it dry out a bit. You'll be back into shoes pretty soon, the nail takes ages to grow back but the skin is enough underneath.

(Obvs when I say take the dressing off I mean, clean it properly and make sure you keep cleaning it until there's no obvious wound there.)

I’ve just lost all of mine (chemotherapy) - I’m just trying to keep them as clean as possible to avoid infection

Oh man! I had no idea that could happen with chemo, though I guess nails are sort of like hair? Sounds awful. I hope it's going OK otherwise.

It attacks growing cells, so yes...hair and nails and more besides. Awful. Huge support and love to anyone going through it.

tapdancingmum · 10/04/2023 09:26

If it is your big toe nail which turns blue you need to go and get it checked. They may drill a hole in it to release the blood. My DD had this done and the blood spurted halfway across the room! I went and nothing came out but the nail has now lifted and is only attached at the sides.

I kicked a bookcase that I was moving - I knew it was there, had moved it many times before and have no idea how I kicked it. 😆

Nicknameattemptno6 · 10/04/2023 09:28

Go and see a podiatrist. My lovely podiatrist friend was able to reconstruct a toenail for DD so she could paint her nails and wear her new open toe shoes when her toenail fell off the week before prom!

lemonyfox · 10/04/2023 09:40

This happened to me yesterday too! I have terrible track record with big toe nails being knocked off in accidents. This must be the 16th time it's happened to me now.

Keep it clean and put a plaster on for a couple of days. Then let the air get to it, the nail base will start to toughen up and form a new nail. It will take at least a year to grow back to "normal' but it will only be sore/oozy for a few days, a week tops.

bringonyourwreckingball · 10/04/2023 09:44

@HarlanPepper to be fair I didn’t know either til it started happening! Relatively rare apparently but I appear to have hit the chemo side effect jackpot!

i recommend flip flops and keeping it uncovered as much as possible, if covered it can get damp and that encourages infection.

IronBan · 10/04/2023 09:47

My friend lost her toenail skiing and my sister did a marathon for charity and lost her toenail. I crushed my thumb in a safe and lost my thumbnail. As long as it doesn’t get infected it will be fine, I see it as a tale to tell.

Fuctifin0 · 10/04/2023 11:08

@Unbakey the nail bed was damaged 😭 so needed stitching.
It was shut in the hinge side of an external door in nursery by one of the staff.

It is slightly deformed and she lacks sensation in it now.

Unbakey · 10/04/2023 11:10

Okay, so have showered now and gently cleaned the area
It's my big toe, nail was hanging on by a thread so I panicked and pushed it back into place then bandaged- now the nail is seemingly stuck there? In no rush to rip it off 🤮

Take the toenail off - its not going to reattach. Use padded plasters for a bit to protect toe

My dd's was put on top to offer some protection as the wound healed.
It came off and stayed off at the first dressing change.

There was never any suggestion by the hospital that it would reattach 🤣

RoyGBivisacolorfulman · 10/04/2023 11:14

Mine does this all of the time since damaging it with wrong boots on a duke of E expedition.

It grows and falls off again. It's quite gross , also show everyone and they hate it.
My friend got hers removed completely so never grows back.

BashfulClam · 10/04/2023 11:42

Mine fell off. I was doing a lot of waking and my nail was really sore one day, really painful I was almost i tears. A few days later it started to lift and when I saw the go about something else I mentioned it. He looked and said ‘yep you are going to lose that’. It hung on by a Thread and I couldn’t bring myself to take it off so I saw a podiatrist who cut it off. The new nail took about a year to fully grow in. I’d see a podiatrist if you can to treat it.

I'm so glad that someone else goes around showing off their gnarley wounds.

OP: it will grow back. Hope it's not too sore in short-term. I have a little toe that a few times spontaneously lost the whole nail, for no obvious reason, although I since read it can be sign of fungal infection. Hasn't done it in years & didn't hurt for me anyway, luckily.
