To not know how to treat my sore throat

I know this sounds bonkers but I don’t know what to do with myself. I’m 40 years old, used to suffer with tonsillitis often when I was younger, have had sore throats in the past etc and often they were linked with stress (GCSEs, Alevels, wedding planning etc) but I grew out of that. This week was very very stressful/upsetting and I’m now ill - slightly sniffly, tired and a severely sore throat like nothing I’ve ever experienced.

It isn’t tonsils and seems to be more down the back but swallowing is so painful I want to cry and try to avoid swallowing, I can’t sleep despite being exhausted due to the pain.

So far I have:

Taken pain relief - paracetamol and ibrupofen
honey and lemon drinks
salt water gargling
losenge
ice cream
herbal tea

any other ideas?

Gargle with salt and water.

PaigeMatthews · 01/04/2023 21:33

Sorry! Just spotted it in the middle of your list!

RandomMess · 01/04/2023 21:33

Gargle with soluble aspirin

WhisperingAutistic · 01/04/2023 21:34

This stuff is the best
The benzocaine totally numbs it. I spray in my mouth and then swallow.

Those sore throat sprays are good, I find. But perhaps not possible at this time of night. Poor you. It sounds horrendous.

bamboonights · 01/04/2023 21:34

I find water with ice cubes better than anything warm. Gargling with salt water helps too. Hope you feel better soon.

enjoyingscience · 01/04/2023 21:35

You’re doing the right things. Keep going every hour or so with the salt water gargling, it really will shorten the length of it.

notanicepersonapparently · 01/04/2023 21:36

Also test for Covid as this was how mine started. I like Strepsils as I find keeping the throat moist helps.

3luckystars · 01/04/2023 21:37

Can you see a doctor about it?

TomatoSandwiches · 01/04/2023 21:42

I gargle with 3% Hydrogen peroxide 50/50 with water and half a teaspoon of sea salt.

Luke warm drinks not hot or cold as they irritate small blood vessels or constrict them.

Table spoon of mankua honey in hot water, stir to mix and then let cool a bit, top with juice from half a lemon, take with a zinc tablet.

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2023 21:43

Thank you all. I feel so pathetic. @3luckystars doesn’t seem like a gp would want to see me this soon.

i did do a covid test this morning as I came across a box under the bed when I was looking for slippers. Ironically it’s exactly a year ago I actually had covid. It was negative. Might do another tomorrow.

I’ll send dh to the pharmacy in the morning.

Agreed this stuff is fantastic. Available at supermarkets and late night chemists if you can go now.

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2023 21:53

@BananasinPyhamas our supermarket closes at 9pm on a Saturday… West Country 😩

Should have asked sooner! Dh just remembered he bought me some liquid Beechams earlier because paracetamol was hard to swallow. Going to try that and warm drinks seem to help temporarily. I also can’t stop weeing because I’m drinking so much. There’s champagne left over from my birthday and I don’t even fancy it 😭

I've had some really awful sore throats with strep over the years. One of the things that I've found most helpful is having a constant stream of mini milks - you can sort of stick them right to the back of your throat and numb it. Though your sore throat might be too far back for that.

Also this is horrible but I would keep a mug by the bed to spit into when it was too painful to swallow spit.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/04/2023 22:01

I had years of tonsillitis so was fairly used to sore throats, but just before Xmas I had the worst sore throat I’ve ever had. It was agony to swallow-like swallowing a piece of glass. It felt like I woke up every time I swallowed at night for 3/4 nights-it was horrendous. Chloraseptic and Difflam didn’t really touch it and they are normally great.

I could see the tiniest of what looked like an ulcer on my tonsil bed but then realised that was the just the back of a big ulcer which was why the throat spray wasn’t working as it wasn’t spraying on it as it faced the other way.

Huge sympathy-its horrible.

LubaLuca · 01/04/2023 22:03

I can empathise, I'm in the same boat since last night. A stressful and tiring week has left with me with a sore throat/eustachian tube. I too used to get regular bouts of tonsillitis as a child, and glandular fever once as a young adult and then again in my 30s (how?! why?!). Every time I get run down my throat just decides to surrender and let the bugs right in.

I've been on paracetamol & ibuprofen, Strepsils and constant hot drinks today. I'm going to take a Nytol when I get in bed to try to make me feel more rested tomorrow.

PoorlyDS · 01/04/2023 22:03

When I had it this bad o needed antibiotics. I couldn't speak without retching it was so sore. My big sympathies. I gargled whiskey with ice. It helped a bit

nickelbabe · 01/04/2023 22:04

Try a spray like Difflam - local aneasthetic.
And also merocaine lozenges.

Just dose yourself up.
if it keeps on, though, get a gp appt.

Pandyluna · 01/04/2023 22:06

I gargle with strong minty toothpaste, seems to numb very temporarily! Otherwise - painkillers! Hope you feel better soon

Acupuncture always works well for me, i went yesterday for sore throat and a cold, within a few hours all gone !

raffegiraffe · 01/04/2023 22:18

Benzocaine spray and liquid ibuprofen

Augend23 · 01/04/2023 22:20

Cocodamol would be my recommendation.
